Please don't start suggesting which of our extant characters should procreate together. To borrow the Craigslist phrasing, it's Not OK if you do that. :)

The irony here, of course, is that Geoff took a good-natured swipe at me right before I went dark for a long weekend and then spent almost another full week not realizing that, no, the forum migration wasn't simply taking an extraordinarily long amount of time, my DNS cache was playing silly buggers with me.

(What I'm saying is that I didn't flounce off in a snit. :)

It was actually a harrowing realization when Phil told me, no, they've been back up for days, the problem is on your end. What if Traitor said something funny? What if Mike started a thread about insane minutiae only I care about? I wouldn't know.

How about the cast of Gravity Falls, the Disney Channel's new show about kids who have adventures in the titular town? Let's see for the main cast is...

'Dipper' Pines, real first name unknown. Twin of Mabel, serious for his age and trying to seem more mature than a 12 year old should be. Thought spending the summer with Gruncle Stan would be dull until he found Journal Number Three and had his eyes opened to the strange stuff that goes on in town. Regularly rescues his sister.

Mable Pines, twin of Dipper. Mabel loves to have fun and enjoy things-she loves stickers, arts and crafts, sweaters, boys, her pet pig Waddles, her new friends in Gravity Falls, and just about everything else. Exceptions include gnomes who want to marry her and Gideon. Owns a grappling hook, and knows how to use it. Regularly rescues her brother.

Stanford Pines, Great uncle of Dipper and Mabel. A cheap shyster who runs a tourist trap called the Mystery Shack in Gravity Falls, Oregon. Stan employs two locals at the shack, but believes the Gravity Falls natives to be the dumbest and most gullible people he knows. Stan wears an eyepatch sometimes for effect, counterfeits money, is an ex-boxer, and has no tattoo despite what you may glimpse under his undershirt. Stan is not what he seems.

'Soos' Jesús, hired handyman. A friend of Mabel and Dipper, this affable man-child is willing to obey Stan in all things, fix things around the shack, and assist the kids in their problems. Soos lives with his Abuelita, and is generally all right if a little slow.

Wendy Corduroy, Half-Lumberjack. Does not actually seem to do anything that can be considered 'work'. Dipper has a huge crush on her. Has broken up with a lot of boys. Latest boyfriend tried to mind-control her, leading to a messy termination of the relationship. Works as a life-guard part time for snack and megaphone privileges when she isn't putting in 'time' reading magazines at the Shack.

Gideon, child psychic. Wants to date Mabel, and steal the Mystery Shack. Would prefer to have both. Thinks Dipper is interfering in his creepy pursuit of Mabel and ruining their imaginary relationship. Plot twist-had actual powers until Mabel dealt with the source. Still has dynamite and bulldozers.

I find myself sort of curious about the UF whereabouts of some other Star Trek characters, such as whatever happened to Ben Sisko since there never was a Deep Space 9 and the UF creative staff already absconded with most of the remaining cast. Obviously Bajor is not suffering for lack of an Emissary, but it just seems sort of wrong that he's never been in the picture.

As to other casts, I know that the whereabouts of the Enterprise NX-01 remain buried in mystery, which depending on which Trek fans you ask is probably for the better. And I know that your exposure to Voyager was all of one episode and Elite Force, but I will have to respectfully disagree on "Threshold" being the worst hour of television ever made. That honor goes to "A Night In Sickbay, an episode that pretty much killed Enterprise and nearly did the franchise in.

Respectfully, Commander, you are talking out your ass. "Threshold" makes "A Night in Sickbay" look like fucking Tolstoy, from the weirdly rapey "Ravenous Star Groatie Evolvoid Requires a Mate" attempted plot twist to the classic Tom Servo "I'm better!" ending in which the implications of the above are just sort of casually ignored. "Sickbay" is just dumb (and rather cute in places; I stole the "character casually captures flying thing in open doorway" joke for Shepard's 11); "Threshold" is offensively terrible on every level.

--G.
It's a moot argument anyway; the reality of the matter is that any given episode of third-season 1960s Star Trek except "The Enterprise Incident" is, while one is suffering through it, the worst hour of television ever made.

And now to address the actual content!

>I find myself sort of curious about the UF whereabouts of some other
>Star Trek characters, such as whatever happened to Ben Sisko since
>there never was a Deep Space 9 and the UF creative staff already
>absconded with most of the remaining cast. Obviously Bajor is not
>suffering for lack of an Emissary, but it just seems sort of wrong
>that he's never been in the picture.

It's safe to presume that Commander Sisko's character arc up to and including Wolf 359 is roughly the same as in canon, modulo Starfleet's opposition at the Battle of Wolf 359 having been GENOM MILARM rather than the Borg. After that point, my guess is that he either remained a serving Starfleet officer, possibly achieving his own command shortly thereafter - the survivors of that battle tended to be handled well career-wise by Starfleet Command - or retired to open that restaurant he was always talking about.

Had the timing worked out differently, he might well have been in the running for the job that Susan Ivanova eventually got - as part of the Babylon Foundation's arrangement with the Federation, only Starfleet officers were up for the Babylon 5 XO's post - but as Wolf 359 was 18 years before Babylon 5 became operational, I would imagine he was either too senior to be considered or had left the fleet by then.

Or, who knows, he might be the Earth Alliance's ambassador to Bajor by the late Symphony era, which would put him in an interesting ethical position come the spring of 2412. Point is, I hadn't really thought about it much, but there are possibilities. He's not one of those characters I purposefully avoid having in the UF universe (like Luke Skywalker, whom I promised one of my colleagues would never exist there), I just haven't been motivated to go out and actively make a hole for.

>As to other casts, I know that the whereabouts of the Enterprise NX-01
>remain buried in mystery

Yeah, I've been kicking that around some recently. I'm pretty sure I know what happened to them; it's a question of framing how everyone else finds out.

   Randomly:

We've all met and grown to enjoy having young Boba Fett tooling around the UF galaxy.

But what's Jango been up to since dropping him off at DSM?

Are there other members of the Fett Clan still running around, making life more entertainingly dangerous for the less-polite sectors of the galaxy?

   >But what's Jango been up to since dropping him off at DSM?

Oh, you know... stuff. Living a quiet life, minding his own business, staying out of trouble. I think he might be working as an accountant.

... you're not buying it, are you.

The truth is probably more actiony but in a sense no less ordinary, in that he's doing his job the best way he knows how - it's just that his job involves more running, shooting, jetpacking, and general badassery than most people's.

>Are there other members of the Fett Clan still running around, making

Not unless the Kaminoans decided to cut their losses by selling a Mandalorian clone army to some well-heeled third party. There aren't many third parties around that are that well-heeled, though, so I wouldn't bet a lot on that having happened. Apart from Boba, he has no other family. As he said to Khyra in Wish You Were Here, what woman would put up with him? :)

They're not directly related to him, but there are two other known 25th-century survivors of the ancient Mandalorian army Jango was part of (Fenn Shysa and Khyra Jinn), and they're doing much the same sort of work. When they originally arrived in the modern era (hey, living 2000 years is still a form of time travel - more so, subjectively, if you slept through most of it!), they each took a segment of the Known Galaxy as their individual "turf" to maximize their experience of their new reality and enable the most comprehensive comparison of notes when they reconvened. The practical necessity of that is long since gone, but they still generally tend to stick to their old zones. Jango mainly works the Outer Rim Territories, Khyra the Core Sectors, and Fenn the Coreward Frontier.

I just had a thought(and at the moment, I'm watching the butt-end of Sayonara no Tsubasa, coincidentally) -- since Sheryl Nome is kicking around somewhere in the UF-verse(or so I remember reading somewhere around here) -- does this mean that other characters or elements from Macross Frontier might make an appearance?

Because, oh Lawd, those Valkyries.

(also, the Trinity would solve that whole Alto/Sheryl/Ranka triangle like THAT. *snaps fingers* Just saying.)

Back to lurking.

Sheryl Nome is one of Kaitlyn's acquaintances in the young adult music business; they come from different worlds and have different performance styles, but they both grok what makes concerts good - the music. (Sheryl got a passing mention in Operation: WINTERFEST.)

As for the members of the SMS... well, the Jolly Rogers Legios Squadron was lost with all hands during the events of Sonfall, and the unit designation and insignia was retired in their memory. But, Komilia Sterling had the authorization to staff her air wing on the Prometheus any way that she desired, and while her reborn Crusader flight of course got a berth onboard, there was certainly room there for "Skull" squadron...

(also, they have a very small Queadluun-Rhea squad onboard.)

Sadly, VF-25's and co probably aren't going to appear anytime soon. (I like them, but I can't say for Gryph. Also, it's been demonstrated that the VF-1 is always going to be top dog in UF 'cause they keep stuffing new tech and pushing the envelope even further.)

That probably depends in large part on whether I actually manage to watch it.

Well, to be fair, the presence of a top dog does not preclude other dogs. It's pretty clear in Rogue Squadron, for instance, that the VF-4 Lightning and VF-11 Thunderbolt have seen frontline service along with the marks of VF-1 that were contemporary to them. If nothing else, as the technologies it embodies advance ever further, the VF-1 does tend to get progressively more expensive. (For the same reason, it's probable that the VF-19 Excalibur will see production, even though the YF-19 prototype didn't win the Project Supernova trial.)

So I wouldn't necessarily rule out any later Macross platform solely on the basis of the VF-1 still being in production.

Yeah, I don't actually know what you're talking about there, but Corwin, Utena, and Anthy are not in the business of sorting out other people's romantic bullshit; not only is that not a service they offer, they've barely got a grip on their own half the time. :)

There's 3 main types of responses to a thread like this; 1: Gryphon has no idea what you're talking about. 2: Gryphon knows what you're talking about but doesn't care for it or doesn't think it will fit in UF. and finally the scariest possible response of all, 3: Gryphon knows what you're talking about or you've convinced him to check it out and he now has plans to introduce it to UF. Distracting Gryphon's muse with new material is a dangerous thing. He already has way more ideas than he does time to write them down, just from the myriad sources already in UF. Dont get me wrong, I've thoroughly enjoyed everything that's resulted from Gryphon watching Avatar:TLA and TLOK, but I'd also like to get back to Shepard's team on Paragon. (despite the fact that we know Tali'Zorah survives from her mention in Holiday In the Sun 6 years later, we were still left off on a strong cliffhanger at the end of Shepard's 11 part 3)

Heh.

>I'd also like to get back to Shepard's team on Paragon.

Though this is a fair point, I should note that it may not be entirely fair to blame the Shepard's 11 layoff on Korra, inasmuch as she came along (for me, anyway) more than a year after the most recently completed episode; that momentum had already been lost pretty thoroughly as a result of The Summer When Shit Got Real. (WARNING: Medical Drama.) A contributing factor may well have been that I never bothered playing Mass Effect 3 beyond the scene on Mars.

Incidentally, the Cancer Adventure also clobbered the momentum on the fourth issue of Bubblegum Crisis: The Iron Age, which I had just started getting back into some kind of groove on when the diagnosis came down. I wrote a couple of scenes for that which I had forgotten about entirely until I ran across them while rereading the draft the other day in search of whatever it is I'm in search of when I reread long-stalled drafts.

Have you considered watching a play through video on youtube for ME3? Even if the ending was lackluster, the meat of the game was fun and had a lot of powerful character moments, especially with Mordin.

I started recording my own play-through with Arisa Shepard, but life and other games got in the way before I got to Rannoch. :/ ONE of these days...

Well, I'm 2-for-2 then (or 0-for-2, depending on how you look at it). I mistook your line for a variation of "Yes, Squat, doing X would be a Bad Thing," which was guaranteed to show up at least once an episode, along with the aforementioned Giant Explosion of Bees.

Y'know, I used to say that all the time. Then I started reading Worm, a superhero novel in which the main character has bug control powers and is a hero. Sort of. Mostly. In intent, anyway. Well, she's a lot better than how things could've wound up being.

She is a deadly bee weapon. It is as glorious as it sounds.

The former sounds like something Big Fire would do, based on a passage in Silver Guardian:

Agent A laughed gaily at that. "Oh, 674, you are an
imaginative one," she said. "You have a bright future ahead of you, I
think. No, I didn't stage that, but it's an excellent idea for some
future operation. Lull some unsuspecting city into thinking it has a
giant protector, then dash all its hopes in a single day of fire and
terror! I -like- the way you think."

My 16 year-old son is getting into the original Battlestar Galactica and that made me think of a character I'd love to see: Baltar. The original version was so much more interesting than the reboot one in my opinion. And let's not forget Lucifer either.

I don't wish to seem as though I'm dissing the great John Colicos, but what, exactly, is so compelling about a craven quisling without even the most basic facility for detecting obvious facts like, "Your so-called allies hate and intend to kill all humans, such as yourself, genius"?

I mean, don't get me wrong, Gaius Baltar isn't any better - a man so daft he would side with an enemy bent on the extermination of the species of which he is himself a member is always going to be kind of a hard sell in the "sure, I'll buy that there is a point to this character" department - but OG Baltar? Really? I mean, really? :)

I liked him because he was affably evil. He just wanted to be the leader of humanity. OK, so it would be under the Cylons, but he'd still be top human. I see him as somebody who lost out in the Presidential election one too many times and just said to hell with it, I'll see what the other side can do for me. Not so much evil as just a spoiled brat who can't understand why the good things didn't keep coming once he was an adult.
