"Knightmare Chess"

Heh. Well, since I saw the name in a post, and linked that to the exploding bishop in the Symphonies, I did the dangerous thing, and Ass-U-Me-d that that was the name of the version they played. And then, of course, came the next thing...the questions. So:

1. Is there actually a game like this?
2. If so, are there rules available?
3. If there is, where can I get them?

Well, that was pretty much it, I guess. Oh, ho...no it wasn't.

4. Has anyone in the populace read the books of Gord the Rouge by Gary Gygax?
4a. In them is a version of chess with camels and other pieces, does anyone know if and where rules for THIS type of chess can be found?

THAT was all. So, ta!

Card game - yes. CCG - no. Never had a chance to play myself, but it looks fun.

Yes, you assume correctly :)

Or your local game store, but Warehouse 23 is probably a safer bet...

According to my chess-loving friends, its main advantage is that it makes the game so chaotic that lousy chess players can play against decent chess players without being automatically slaughtered.

It's important to note, however, that the kids were playing with a nonstandard house rule in A Rose for the New Year; normally, Fireball (the exploding-piece card) doesn't affect kings. Under the usual Knightmare Chess rules, you can't checkmate with card effects. That rule was waived in New Year in the hopes that it would make the game end sometime that day. :)

Dragonchess, a perhaps overly complex 3D game with three 8x16 boards.
The rules were printed in an issue of Dragon magazine sometime around
the Gord books' publication--it might have been issue #100, I can't
recall. It'd certainly be in the Complete Dragon on CD-ROM collection.

More or less playable, although a little tweaking by a real chess player might be advisable-- my older brother and I actually built a board lo these many years ago, and tried a few games. It was amusing, but got old quickly. Neither of us were heavily into chess, though. Hmm, I wonder what happened to that issue...?

If you can't find it, I think I still have a couple comp copies of #100 in a box somewhere (I wrote the big AD&D adventure in that issue). Email me directly if you want and I'll go look for a copy for you.

Trippy. That's ok, I'm pretty confident it's in the big stack I've got back at the ancestral home in rural Minnesota (most issues from about 60 through 150 or so, IIRC). Thanks anyhow.
