"long strange trip it's been..."

LAST EDITED ON Jun-04-01 AT 06:52 PM (EDT)

I'm Ard, I'm one of the few female EPU fans on the board, I'm 25. Up until very recently, I was working as a Solaris admin (and if you know anyone who wants a very junior admin in the SF Bay Area to mentor, lemme know, I can play Padawan Learner with the best of 'em...)

These days, I'm keeping house and debating a return to college (Berkeley, natch) to finish up a long-dormant BS in Mass Communication. I'm the one who first wanted an IRC channel for EPU and then never f'n showed up after the first four or so days. ;)

My homepage lairs at www.ronin-research.org, but my quotefile is probably more interesting (quotes.html off that). Been tossing around some fiction ideas for a while, some of which are posted and some of which aren't.

Ard
just finished Wounded Rose earlier.

Fun, isn't it (the Solaris stuff). Hi Ard, nice to know I'm not the only female reading here and actually posting. ;)

I'm halfway through my CSA certification on the Solaris end. I unfortunately botched the second exam... as my former coworker said, "who the hell uses WebNFS anyways, and why is it on the test if no one ever uses it?"

Considering finishing it before I go back on the job market, anyways. A Solaris admin with only eleven months' experience looks a LOT more impressive with a CSA, unfortunately.

Oh hell, they're all like that. When I got my RHCE I was tested on things I have *never* seen in the real world - not before the prep, not after the exam. I couldn't pass the RHCE test now if I took it again, unless I took a couple of weeks to prep like last time.

I also think that testing a sysadmin and not allowing any references - no books, no man pages, etc - is unrealistic. I have never known a (good) admin who doesn't keep references handy.

I tend to agree with the statement that you can judge the quality of an admin by their bookshelves.

Same with the CISSP - mainframe security? How likely am I to need to know that?

During my last big interview, they asked me what I would do in XYZ Solaris situation I'd never seen before.

"Grab the man pages for that component and start reading, then yell over the top of the cube to get coworker input. I may not KNOW it, but it can obviously be learned, or no one would ever do it."

Well, no, because

a) I was being sarcastic about the physical security functions of the supposedly-network-ops job I had at the time and
b) I don't have that job anymore.

Even better. I have a picture of Gryphon in full tuxedo, plus top hat, plus a cape.

Heh, yeah - I liked that look. Sometimes I consider buying a tux just to sport the look at random. Good picture, too. When I moved back from California, I misplaced my copy, darn it.

Odd that this should come up right now - I've spent most of today in my black suit (fortunately, OH so fortunately, the heat wave broke last night, so today was in the mid-seventies, breezy and dry, not, as it's been for the last week or so, in the high nineties, stagnant and too humid to freaking breathe), being a sort of combination best man/er... guy? of honor at my mother's wedding.

(OBSERVATION: When both of the participants in the marriage ceremony are approximately fifty, the part of the Congregational wedding text which wishes, "May they live to see their children's children" is pretty pointless. Chances are, either they already have, or they're never gonna... )

It was kind of an odd ceremony, what with the occasional pop music (my mother has horrific taste in pop music) and Vincent having suffered a curious mental lapse and plopped the ring into his pocket with what sounded like every key he's ever owned in his life and at least $30 in change, plus a pair of sunglasses. (Long, comically awkward, musically jingling pause here, with standard-issue embarrassed giant drop of sweat.) More fun than most weddings I've been to, though... unlike ReRob's, for instance, it didn't feature 100-degree heat and an entire Catholic Mass in the middle... :)

--G.
(my memory may be exaggerating how hot it was at ReRob's wedding.)
(I really should write up the Tales of ReRob's Wedding for the Subterranean Vault... )

Oh, yes. I was in southern Massachusetts for work last week. Not having checked the weather forecast, I brought my spring jacket because I was worried it might be a little chilly at night (when I work), this being New England.
