Well, I think they were too busy reading it to post.

>Garak

Dr. Bashir & Garak seem to go togther for some odd reason.
Bashir's reason for getting a posting at UF:B5 is around about the same as the ST:DS9 one.

>Picard

Can't have the NCC-1701-A without him and the rest of the command crew.
Data's still a cat person. Just don't let Troi near the helm without her receiving more comprehensive training.

>Liza's secret

Theorised on in the forum. I think someone guessed half of it, but not all of it.

>Amanda's brother being a fan of Battlecruiser Vengeance?

Well, she is a fan of it. So, she must have exposed Garon to it at some point, or maybe it happened in reverse.

Of cause Vengeance could be just be a common warship name.

>All I can say is , wow .

Wow is good. Can't wait to see the next arc. Oh, yeah...add another Aya induced shatter to that tally.

He might be basing it on the 'Star Trek: Generations' movie.

But then, the saucer section had just taken a hit from the drive section's explosion and had to make an emergency landing on the planet. I'm sure she can handle something as sedate as docking.

In the ST canon, Troi isn't a line officer (though the holodeck test she endures to reach the rank of Commander gives her some work there). Officers in certain specialties are simply not expected to take command of a vessel; certainly McCoy never did, and Dr. Crusher only took command of the Enterprise-D when she was the only person onboard (and the universe was only slightly bigger than the ship).

"Doctor's Orders". Diane Duane. Highly recommended.
(The story may or may not be "canon". I don't care. As far as I am concerned, Dinae's Trek _is_ canon, and all the rest's apocryphal. ;-)

I'd think that a Klingon space opera like Battlecruiser Vengeance would be a very popular show on a planet as militaristic as Gamilon.

All I can say is..AWESOME! The story and the plot twisters never cease to amaze me, Liza not only being a telepath but a healer of some sort? Bit sad that her family disowned her, but maybe starting a life where she finally earns things, instead of being spoiled, should make her honest. (SIGH), Gryphon, do you have any idea just how addictive this place is? It's worse than my smoking habit.

Still amazed...I think I'm gonna go read it again.

Oh yeah, I just remembered something. Decided to pull up Kazaa to go with the trial, and I had just started up Dragula when I noticed the cue for it.

Now that spooked me. Great minds think alike, eh?

Well, there's still twists and turns in this installment, as usual, though overall it was a bit anticlimactic after everything that's gone on in Hunted Rose. (I say "a bit" because Kate's trial is anything but anticlimactic.)

Liza's secret and subsequent transformation. ...I think I have to get back on that later. It's not that I don't like it; it's not that it was totally unexpected, but there's something about it that I can't really put into words. Hopefully I can do better once I get it all sorted out properly.

Saionji's actions aboard the train. I thought he got his mind straightened out. I can see his intentions, of course, but I wasn't ready him gambling with his own life like that. Of course, he did admit that he'd screwed up by injuring himself more seriously than he intended, but still...

Azalynn. Okay, I didn't see it coming. And I'll admit that I don't see where it's going either. Truth be told, I don't see the point of her brooding.

"Stick." *CLUNK* Admittedly, just as Corwin said, you'll never forget that name. And admittedly, you'll forget how silly that sounds once you see Corwin in action with it. But that doesn't change the fact that Corwin's evocation sounds pretty lame (in the words of my roommate: "I can't believe he just said that.")

That's it for now. Count on some more later.

Sometimes, being a little crazy can be useful. Anyway, it's all relative. He's kind of like that old Billy Joel song now. ("You may be right - I may be crazy. But it just might be a lunatic you're looking for... ")

It sounds better in Old Norse. :)

About equivalent, actually. "Stick" is "Stafr," judging by the dictionary of Old Icelandic (it's darn close for not being Old Norse). ;)

   >Azalynn. Okay, I didn't see it coming. And I'll admit that I don't
>see where it's going either. Truth be told, I don't see the point of

(The following is written from my perspective as a longtime reader and observer of SoS. This should in no way be considered as The Word From On High.)

Well... look at it this way:

Azalynn's been low-level sniping at Liza from all the way back in the -First Movement-, when Kate, Utena, et. al. retreived Kate's Piano from Boston. In a way, Liza was a 'safe' target for Azalynn to vent against -- especially since at the time Liza WAS a petty, spiteful bitch who enjoyed hurting Az's friends -- and over time it had likely become habit for our favorite little Dantrovian. This behaviour likely increased (and continued to feel justified) in the wake of the events of the Fourth Movement, where both Dorothy and Miki felt the sting of Liza's plotting.

Now, notice that in the Sixth Movement's, Azalynn's life at WPI gets radically upset, courtesy of the tender mercies of the Psi Corps, directly threatening the -lives- of her close friends. Notice that when the Duelists and friends were trying to figure out how to get out of WPI, Azalynn was brooding then as well. And somewhere behind the scenes between the arrival at the Home Fleet and getting quarters on Babylon 5, Azalynn would have heard of Liza's part in touching off the imbroglio.

So, to Azalynn, her feelings towards Liza would only have -increased-, since clearly the fact that "Liza Was A Bitch" would have been clear to everybody there...

... but then, Azalynn gets left in the lurch by Liza's sudden change of heart and beginning tentative steps towards making amends (thanks to Sky and Saionji talking with Liza, and Kate's acceptance of Liza's apology); and Az's left wondering why the hell everybody -else- in her group of friends aren't trying to cast Liza out afterwards and can't see why they'd be doing this, since obviously Liza Is Scum...

It's amazing what sorts of habits and beliefs one can get into without thinking about them when one believes you're doing the "right" thing... just look at Liza Broadbank. ;)

Anyway, this is my take on it. Make of it what you will.

True. All valid points. All good points too. But no matter how I try to think about it, one phrase keeps resounding in my mind: "This is Azalynn we're talking about!"

Y'know, Azalynn? The one who's not quite happy-go-lucky but not really needing a big stretch to get there? The one who appears to be one of the better-suited among the Duelists and Co. to bounce back from anything? Azalynn's a free thinker, open-minded and receptive to change, and, as Miki says, she really isn't the type of person who holds grudges. If it was anyone else, such as Amanda or even, gods help me, Moose, I'd be able to accept such reluctance, but not from her.

I guess that's my primary reason for my reaction. But I don't need the Powers that Be to point out where I'm wrong--even as I was framing my response I could see how I can easily shoot it down. The way I'm wired, I can easily see both sides of the argument and the holes in the reasoning. It probably explains why I often ended up in the high school debate team without even me noticing it.

Which is exactly why it's bothering her so much.

Azalynn has hated Liza for a very long time. She gave up any hope that Liza might change a great while ago. So, when Liza actually started to get her head together, some part of Azalynn just couldn't accept it -- she couldn't let go of those past impressions.

She's probably never faced a situation like that until now. And she fell into the same trap we all fall into sometimes. And it took an outside observer (Miki) to see it for what it was.

Even Az isn't infallible. It just seems that way sometimes.

Really? Remember this:

"You're so lovely," Azalynn whispered softly, her breath warm
and sweet against Liza's cheek. Then she cupped the blonde's throat
in her whole hand, thumb and three fingers leaving four burning little
spots where the tip of each claw pressed against the flesh, and went
on in an even softer, more intimate tone, "It's such a shame your soul
is empty."

Azalynn's religion and culture have trained her not to hold grudges, but she clearly does. She is hurt, badly, by the ignorance of people like the Canadian border volk who believe her religion is just an excuse to get laid. She is constantly insulted by people like Liza who see her as a "rodent". She has consistently shown anger and rage at the racism (for lack of a better term) that she has had to face.

As well, Azalynn was a perfect roomate for Amanda. A Gamilion and a Dantrovian shouldn't get along, simply because their philosophies are so different. Yet Amanda and Azalynn have very simliar codes of honor. Where one is public, the other is private.

And, as it turns out, Azalynn is wrong. Liza does have a soul - a very hurt and twisted soul. Azalynn completely missed that by being taken in by the outside personality. In case you haven't notived Azalynn decides very quickly if she will like someone - and she didn't like Liza. Azalynn isn't as infallible as she thinks she is.

So now she is heading home, metaphorically to hide under the covers of her bed until she feels better or the school year starts - take your pick. Perhaps Liza isn't the only one who will do some maturing this summer.

yours,

I believe so. It's the title of one of Gustav Mahler's works, mentioned the pre-song chatter of a Tom Lehrer song. ("... Gustav Mahler, who wrote Das Lied von der Erde and other light classics.")

And now that I've read it...

Argh. No-closure closure. And a certain someone is still in the Green Room. (If it were anyone else other than they, I'd think they'd start ripping the walls down with their fingernails...)

Xenia's off-screen death is the only false note for me here. Somehow, I thought this would be given more attention and have more impact; she's been a major player, even off-stage, through the last half of the story and she (or the readers) really deserved a bit more detail about her demise. Unless of course she's not yet dead and the vague report from the return of the Vengeance was simply a bluff or blind of some sort.

Deep-Babylon-Space-95 seems to work pretty well; I had my doubts about how well they'd integrate, but I was wrong.

Bashir still strikes me as a bit of a twit. But that's just me.

Troi as Psi Corps? Weird but appropriate. Somehow, Daniel Dae Kim on Crusade comes to mind, which is no doubt intentional.

Dorothy's blossoming. Good. "Don't let him fall out of a tree and break his neck", plus her broad smile. This is clearly a human being who just happens to be mechanical in nature, as opposed to a simple robot.

Liza's redemption. I'd hoped for this but didn't expect to see it, at least not this soon; I have no complaints, though, as it it didn't seem forced or rushed. Then again, I've got a soft spot in my heart for bad girls going good -- just look at what I'm doing with Madigan in Drunkard's Walk II, or my plans for Marller if I ever write Drunkard's Walk V: Holy, Holy, Holy... Cow.

Similarly, Sky and Saionji's parts in her redemption. Nice. Saionji's action surprised the hell out of me, though; I wasn't expecting anything like that.

(And while in proximity to this, color me stupid, but I can't place Saionji's little parable about the girl he knew with similar problems to Liza's. It doesn't ring any bells for me, within either Utena or SOS continuity. (Unless, in the case of the former, it's something that happened during the 13 episodes currently in licensing limbo...))

I wonder just what Skuld's noticed about Wakaba. An ordinary mage-gift shouldn't be that interesting to the Norn of Tomorrow, so what's Wakaba got that's so special? In other words, what the hell did Clef set loose?

Kate's mastery test -- whew. I was sweating and exhausted just from reading it. Once again, Liza's appearance among the opponents was a nice touch.

And what, pray tell, may make the bridge of the IKV HoSghaj icy? <grin>

Also on the HoSghaj, a crossed-wires moment -- when I first saw "Koth", I misread it as "Kosh"... the image that resulted was... odd.

I can perfectly visualize Ivanova's blinktake on seeing a pink-haired 15-year-old Earth girl in the command chair of a Klingon battlecruiser. That's going to go down as one of the classic SotS moments.

Buttercup as a lab partner? Even as described, I still shudder to imagine. And Fuu Hououji, too... polite as always, I see.

Will the inestimable Phil Moyer be doing an illo of Kate's new gown?

"Stick"? "Stick"?! Corwin wouldn't happen to have a matching tonfa or billy club called "Twig" or "Splinter", now, would he?

The new Duelists' Society building sounds suspiciously like that Star Trek: TOS matte painting used in The Cage and in just about every episode's closing credits. Especially given the description of the sky.

And I've just run out of time on my lunch break here at work, so I'll save any further comments until later.

   >Argh. No-closure closure.

Eh, think of it as the end of the first book in the saga. :)

>Xenia's off-screen death is the only false note for me here. Somehow,
>I thought this would be given more attention and have more impact;

It will, most likely. (And I only say "most likely" because it's Gryph's muse that would have to do the legwork, not mine. :) But wedging it into this story would have been unwieldy -- better to give it its own Entr'acte.

>Bashir still strikes me as a bit of a twit. But that's just me.

Well, that's because Bashir is a bit of a twit. But he's our twit.

>Troi as Psi Corps? Weird but appropriate.

Well, she's an Earth citizen and has some telepathic abilities... it's kind of unavoidable.

>Somehow, Daniel Dae Kim on Crusade comes to mind, which is
>no doubt intentional.

Nope. Gryph has no desire whatsoever to watch a minute of Crusade (and, look, don't bother trying to convince him -- trust me), and likely isn't aware of the character's existence.

(And I've only seen two episodes, myself.)

>Similarly, Sky and Saionji's parts in her redemption. Nice.
>Saionji's action surprised the hell out of me, though; I wasn't

That's one side benefit of being slightly insane: you can surprise people.

It's right near the end of Utena, yes.

>And what, pray tell, may make the bridge of the IKV HoSghaj
>icy? <grin>

Heh. Nothing, really. (Well, with the possible exception of Zargh.)

That sign spent many years decorating the bridge of the WDF Pennsylvania, UF-Truss's first and only WDF command and patrol partner of the WDF Tom Servo.

What made the bridge of the Pennsylvania icy? A flaky climate control system. Why was it flaky? Because Q was the chief engineer of the Pennsylvania. I shouldn't have to explain further.

(The Servo/Pennsylvania chronicles were never written, sadly, but at least we can backfill some of the material now. And, talk about people stuck in the Green Room... poor Krontep has been in there for almost ten years!)

>Buttercup as a lab partner? Even as described, I still shudder to
>imagine.

Yeah, labs are never dull in that class. :)

>Will the inestimable Phil Moyer be doing an illo of Kate's new gown?

Dunno... but Anne Cross (who designed it in the first place) is working on a drawing of her own.

Stick.

Hmm... I don't recall the image.

That's not what it's from, though. (It's not actually a direct reference to anything, so far as I know.)

Yeah, what he said. You don't honestly think I'd leave that unwritten, do you?

7M claims to be the end of Symphony No. 1, and story-chronology-wise that's true; but there's at least one loose end from earlier to be tied up, and that's it. I think I'll call it Pavane for a Dead Princess.

Little q. John Todd, former commo officer of the SDF-17. Not John deLancie.

Nope. If it looks like anything in established SF (and this is a bit of a reach), think... think of a ruined, long-abandoned, smaller version of the Theed Palace from Phantom Menace.

As Truss says, it's not a direct reference.

Glad to hear it. I hope that moving forward we get to see more of Amanda, Devlin & Co., even if they need their own little spinnoff series. They're just too interesting to get left out. Plus, Rina's cute... :)

I'm also wondering why Amanda kept it so hush-hush when she got back. After all, the rest of the Duelists, etc. were all directly affected by her actions too... At least Amanda's giving Liza a chance - of all the people in that group, she was the one I worried about most (Devlin might have been the worst off, be he's a much less warlike person once the immediate danger passed...).

P.S. I noticed that Reflections... started off listed as an Entr'Acte(sp), but ended up as a movement. Why the change?

It became huge and important to the overall storyline, dealing with all the major characters. (It was originally expected to contain little more than Kate's promotion trial and the stuff about the school.)

Thank god - for a moment I was horrified with the thought that Edison Bell let Q have anything to do with a ship commanded by Derek Bacon. Scarrrrry.

Quick time out - I thought q was air boss for the WDF - how did he end up the Pennsylvania's engineer?

The what? I was bored at spots during the film but I'm sure I would have noticed a looming, well built stone structure....It isn't that neo-Roman thing at the end, its it? Or do you mean the way too cool Jabba the Hut/Anazani thing during the pod races?

>As Truss says, it's not a direct reference.

Thank god. Dark Duelists would be too much to deal with...and tres lame to boot.

The title is borrowed from a particular piece of classical music, Pavane for a Dead Princess (Pavane pour une infante défunte), Maurice Ravel, 1899.

He was airboss of the SDF-17 back during the Golden Age, but that ended in 2288.

Queen Amidala's palace on Naboo. There are a couple of nice long shots of it near the beginning of the movie, if I remember correctly (I haven't seen it since it was in theaters, so I'm not entirely certain where in the film they are; there's a still in my 'making of' book).

PLEASE tell me you're not going to introduce Souji Mikage and his Black Rose Society contingent to the Symphony, whether through flashback or otherwise. True, one of them is already featured prominently in the Symphony, but given who she is, it's unavoidable (and she also happens to be the most likeable out of all of them).

True, but you're not going to bring them back are you? I have yet to see any to RGU (funds my dears, funds) and thus have caged fan-sub scripts off the net. Really, Akio can't be that short of ideas, can he?

I can only wonder for a moment about the famed question about the Utonium triplets: How DO they actually pick things up? Telekinesis? Subatomic attraction?

Looking at the little Bubbles keychain I got last weekend at the birthday party of my friend Jen, who writes issues of the PPG comic, one of them turned into an actual episode, I remain...

Well, yeah. Every other three-student lab team in that class has six thumbs. Corwin, Nall and Buttercup had only four.

OK. I am hoping we meet up with the girls soon, if just to see what they're like in the UF Universe.

It should be an interesting summer.

(I was, for some reason, parsing the need for thumb parity as balancing Corwin's thumbs with Buttercup's and Nall's lack of same. My bad.)

   >Also on the HoSghaj, a crossed-wires moment -- when I first saw
>"Koth", I misread it as "Kosh"... the image that resulted was... odd.

The first time I read this line, several hours ago, I was in the midst of eating a sandwich. (Yes, I know.) It wsa difficult avoiding choking on the sandwich, and spraying it all over my keyboard. Even more when I involuntarily interpolated the phrase "Kosh of the Vengeance." I don't think the world is ready for cryptic Klingons.

Okay, moving on to some actual commentary on the story, in no particular order...

I can easily see the Klingons being this humorous. But Taco Night still hurt my brain. Not only were there Klingons in sombreros... but there was a Klingon mariachi band... and Klingon karaoke... oh, gods...

I'd like to go on record as stating that I believe I predicted Liza's change of heart and insight, and that she was a psi but something other than a telepath (and on the board somewhere, no less). Anodyne, though? Wouldn't have guessed that specifically, or that powerfully, but damn, no wonder she's so messed up.

Can't wait to see the Xenia hunt. I may have ethical issues with that sort of thing in the Real World, but in fiction, I have no issues with seeing someone getting gutted ^_^.

Bashir... yes, exactly how he was back in early DS9, prior to the revelation about exactly what he really is. Does he have a comparable skeleton lurking in his closet in UF, or would that be telling? Or does gene resequencing actually have the same stigma in UF as it does in the Trekiverse? He's great as a supporting character, but not as strong as a lead character.

Garak. Ohhh, yes. Garak. Can't wait to see more of him. Especially if he's got the same background as on DS9... that would be interesting in the current political climate, every bit as much as it was in DS9. Which brings to mind... does the Dominion, or its component races, exist in UF? (And it also makes me wonder if the IDS will be making trips to B5 on occasion to hang out at Quark's.)

A thought... "Wounded Rose" covered an entire semester at WPI. Then it took two stories to cover the time between the end of that semester and the beginning of the next, and the entire rest of Symphony No. 1 covered about the same time period as "Wounded Rose." Is Symphony No. 2 going to be covering the same time span, over the same rather substantial number of stories? Or would that be telling?

More as they occur to me, I guess.

Being genetically tweaked for greater intellectual (or physical) performance is hardly cause for notice, let alone opprobrium, in the UF universe of the early 25th century. Bashir is no more unusual than a Hoffmanite. Which means there are certain "back to nature" groups who would give him a hard time, but the general public doesn't give a damn one way or another, and governments certainly aren't interested.

>Which brings to mind... does the Dominion, or its

If they do, no one has yet encountered them and reported it to the Known Universe.

Well... no.

You see, I don't like Quark. (I have nothing against Armin Shimerman, except possibly that he has a very annoying voice - but I don't like Quark.)

>Is
>Symphony No. 2 going to be covering the same time span, over

It wouldn't be "telling", per se, but it would be predicting the future, which I'm generally not very good at. I really have no idea how many stories or how long in toto the second Symphony will end up being.

Part of me thinks that Gryph deserves to die to planting that little
bit of imagery in my head.

But I usually don't listen to that part to let y'all know :-).

It is refreshing to see Liza Broadbank now acting like decent human
being. Though the circumstances that beought that about were rather
tragic (if nessary), I hope that she shows later, maybe in another arc,
just to show how much more she changes (Plus the image of her on t'skrang
merchant ship would be priceless). Now that she has decided to become her
person, one sees potential, a small bit but potential.

Klingon...mariachi...band. I know what all those words mean, but I can't keep them strung together for more than 5 seconds at a time. Burn in hell, Hutchins. :)

Oh, and just a suggestion Gryphon, you might want to consider orientating the image of 'Stick' vertically. It went off the right edge of my browser when I opened it. Unless there's a specific reason for it to be on its side like that which I'm not grasping, in which case, nevermind. :)

You tell me to burn in hell and then you ask for a fiddly-ass graphics modification? That's showing some nerve.

Anyway, if it's oriented vertically, it goes off bottom edge. Either way you have to scroll to see all of it... not a very productive change to make, I'd think.

Although now that I've said that, the vertical scroll would be more convenient for wheelmice... and the inscription isn't really readable anyway.

Speaking of unreadable inscriptions...

The SoS logo graphic always bothered me--I can read runes, Old Norse, Tolkien
dwarvish, and Britannian, and that inscription looked like none of them.

Then I stood on my head, and it made perfect sense:

YTLIUG TON EY DOG FO EMAN EHT NI TSAC

...Okay, not perfect sense, but I could read it.

Every one of those runes--though not the inscription as a whole--is upside down!
Can you get PJ to fix it before I go blind? :)

On the first pass, I parsed:

"Stack in the name of Dog, ye not guilty."

I find that enormously entertaining.

Truss made the graphic; Phil drew the characters.

As for the inscription, that's weird. I guess the whole Elder Futhark font is upside down, 'cause we didn't do anything other than type the inscription and then change the font being used.

That probably has something to do with the fact that the Futhark are usually written right-to-left.

Mirroring sideways wouldn't be any help. However, rotating them 180 degrees means that they can be edited quickly, and then, once they're printed out, you flip the paper around, and it's in the proper orientation.

It's far easier than trying to do it right-side up, when most versions of most operating systems operate on the assumption that text will be entered and read left-to-right. There's software to facilitate right-to-left editing, but it isn't cheap.

If its the same font file I had, all capital letters appear upside down for some reason. If you typed the inscription in capitals, this is probably the reason the runes are upside down.

Of course, I haven't seen that font in about four years and I could be wrong.

Congrats, Bob. :)

Well, having just read through this thread, people have covered just about all of my "wow that was fun" moments... except one.

"And Flight Officer Kitarina Dragonaar," Garon went on,
indicating the shorter, more... well, the only word Reed could come up
with was 'voluptuous'... of the two. Sisters, the security officer
thought, well well, but he kept his face neutral and his voice polite
as he greeted her as well.

Now, I know Gryph refuses to so much as admit that the series exists...
but as of this moment I will never be able to see Rina Dragonaar as anything other than Onna-Ranma after an 'accident' with a gallon of blue paint...

   Sweet,

Hard to cover all the bases, but a few personal favorites.

Who knew Klingons could be that delightfully warped?
I can't imagine why they were quarantined on that ship.

Azalynn; Your opening up what looked like your most emotionally balanced character for more growth. A visit to Dantrov w/ Miki as her guide? Very nice. I hope that gets it's own chapter.

Elizabeth; makes all kind of sense now, anodyne / empathic abilities + her upbringing make for one messed up teen.

I hope the summer crewhand job does her some good on the personal growth level, because she could be a neat person. If nothing else the complete lack of her usual social frame should allow her to relax into some new modes of thinking.

Kates mastery tests; yowza, now there's the hand to hand equal of Corwin's piloting skills last time.

I noticed that although the kids aren't heading back to WPI, your not exactly
placing them in the safest spot in the galaxy either, left lot's of room
for further troubles in that neck of the woods.

All in all an eye opener on several levels, and with all the splitting up
you allow for such interesting entracte' possibilities.

Thanks much,

Grell

Hmm, I somehow have a picture of her as the sword bearing form of Go Nagai's Cutey Honey, but about 4-5 inches shorter, but regardless, a very neat lady indeed.

That, in fact, was my very first impression of her appearance. And when I read "The Courtship of Princess Dessler" to Peggy last week, she looked up at me and said, "So, Rina looks like a blue girl-type Ranma?" Without any prompting from me.

Great. Now I'm having visions of "Amandakane Dessler" and "Kitaranko Dragonaar", and trying to fit Devlin in as boy-type Ranma, and my brain is exploding.

Bob, hurry up and finish the next part of Drunkard's Walk, willya? :)

   Whoo-Rah! New Stuff!

Well, as always, a ton of comments, but most of them have been made. I do have to second several other people's comments, though...

STICK??? Yeah, he may never forget the name, but still!

The redemption of Lisa... amazing the things that seem to make it from the board into the movements. It will be very interesting to see just what she's like after a summer aboard a Ts'krang trader. Somehow, though, I can totaly empathise with her. Lets just say that if I lived in the UF-verse I'd offer her a cut rate special on hauling her dad off to New Texas and shooting him under the "He needed killin, yer honor" statute. Kanoji's actions caught me totaly off guard... for a moment I wondered if he was still harboring some deep down condemnation for himself that I'd missed in earlier chapters. At least now I know what an Anodyne is. What I don't understand is why they'd be so darn valuable to the Psi's as to warrent brainwashing her.

LT Reed... or is it Maxwell? Good Grief, Gryph! Arn't you going to leave poor Archer ANY officers? As it is, the only ones not Filch...err.. borrowed are Tex and Meriwether.

Aya... My god, its Justy Taylor in a skirt! Somehow, though, I really can see her taking the crew of a whole ship out for breakfast... and I loved the way the Klingon captain put it... "She's less than 100 kallicams (I assume this is somewhat equivalent to feet or meters) from the engine room..." Kinda makes me feel like she's the type that can break things by trying to fix them. No wonder she needs wunderkind T'pall to keep things organized.

Taco night on a Klingon Vessel? At first I had this vision of tortillas stuffeed with Gah and blood cheese.

Mac... I dunno, Red. It seems to me that while MAC may not want command, or excitement, it may continue to thrust itself upon him. I'm not expecting him to vanish into the background anytime soon myself. Personally I was expecting his little secret (to wit, his middle name) to get slipped out everytime someone addressed him... especially when ol Grandad showed up. Either way, he's going to have a tough row to hoe in the future... just one slip and his name is going to litterally be Mudd throught the CFMF fleet.

I've got a nasty guess on that, Can you say *projecting* Anodyne/Empath?

Point a brainwashed healer at a target and have her induce massive fear and
monstrous amounts of pain on them.

Instant natural <deniable> heart attack for any unwanted norms in Psi Corps' way.

Not to mention the ugly possibility of influencing crowds into panic, the list just gets uglier.

At the risk of seeming snappish, are you blind? Look at what she did! Do you know how much power could be gained by isolating and duplicating that talent in the human psionic genome? An army of telepathic soldiers with the capability of healing their own wounds - rendering medical science obsolete, then holding the populace in a stranglehold of ignorance and fear - if you want healing, you'll have to come to the Corps...

It's not, perhaps, the most easily envisioned of future scenarios, but the upper echelons of the Corps try not to discount any avenue toward influence. Besides, just the troops-can-heal-themselves thing would provide a tremendous military edge if it came to that.

>"She's
>less than 100 kallicams (I assume this is somewhat equivalent to feet

A kellicam is a Klingon unit of distance measurement. I'm not sure how big they are, but in Star Trek III, Commander Kruge's crew uses them to read off ranges to Enterprise in combat, so I expect they're the Klingon functional equivalent of a mile or kilometer. The sort of unit that "how far is City X from City Y?" would be answered in on Qo'noS.

>Taco night on a Klingon Vessel? At first I had this vision of

Nope - perfectly straightforward Tex-Mex, embellished slightly with some traditional Klingon spices, but otherwise just what you'd expect in a good Tex-Mex restaurant. It's really catching on in the Empire - Krontep wasn't being flippant.

See, what worries me about Taco Night on a Klingon vessel is the...by-product. I know that my family makes enough methane to power most of the eastern seaboard after Taco Night, and that's just 12 people...I shudder to think....

No, she's the kind who -other- people think would start a warp core breach out of pique. }:-{D

> No wonder she
>needs wunderkind T'pall to keep things organized.

T'Pall is no more, nor less, a wunderkind than the other members of Aya's core group. They were an 'experiment' on fast-tracking the best and brightest in certain fields through Starfleet Academy. The experiment failed because the group developed a greater loyalty to -Aya- than to Starfleet, and so when she was discharged and recruited by the CFMF, her officers followed.

If he keeps hanging around the Duelists, probably so. You'll notice, however, that whatever 'command' he holds is damn tenuous and consists mainly of running ahead and hoping someone follows behind.

Red... are you SURE his middle name isn't really "Naismith"?
I know Aral's already in the CFMF... I'm getting these images of Mac and Ivan Vorpatril getting together to throw a party for the Duellists, only something goes screwily weird, and they have to, well, you know. ;)
