"This Must Be News To Studio Ghibli"
|
So I've renting movies from my local video store (one that isn't Bl*ckb*st*r or H*ll*w**d, both because of the broader catalog of older titles and on the principle of avoiding Evil and supporting local merchants), and in particular older (say, generally speaking, late 80's to mid 90's) anime that they happen to have and that I haven't seen but would like to. (Tonight's selections: New Cutey Honey vol. 2 (dubbed rather than subbed, which is odd, since their copy of the first volume is subbed) and Dragon Half Parts 1 & 2; haven't watched them yet.) Anyway, I bring these along with a couple of other videos up to the front counter, and have this conversation with the guy working there: Guy Behind The Counter: "If you like Japanimation, you should see Ninja Scroll." Me: "I've seen it. Have you seen Princess Mononoke?" (I usually bring this up with people who don't seem too anime-savvy, as it's relatively mainstream in North America -- hell, Miramax distributes it -- and the dub doesn't suck.) GBTC: "That's American." Me: "No, it's not. Studio Ghibli is Japanese." GBTC: "Check the list of producers." Me: "Well, Disney did do the dub, and Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay, but -- " (would have continued to point out that it was written and directed by a legendary figure of anime, made at a Japanese studio, and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time in Japan before it even had an American distributor, but GBTC interrupted me) GBTC: "I know my movies. In fact, I've got two movies showing at blah blah blah..." (No, he didn't say blah blah blah, but at that point I'd stopped caring about what he had to say, and decided to make my exit. The old retail training came back... nod and smile and escape...) -- Sean -- Rabid Crack Weasel #42 http://www.thebrokenlink.org The Broken Link 4.0 is live! (No, he didn't say blah blah blah, but at that point I'd >stopped caring about what he had to say, and decided to make my exit. >The old retail training came back... nod and smile and escape...) Ahhhh, the video store filmmaker. Hey, it worked for Tarintino, right? I'm actually saved a little bit of that kind of thing living in LA mainly because there's a general understanding that the next customer you get chummy with and start bashing/spouting incorrect information to might very well be involved with what you're talking about. But what's fun is to go to any popular restraunt out here and just tune into other conversations around you. Hours of entertainment.

>Kinda like tech support. > >>Film students, well... I lived on a floor that only had three kinds of students:
Film majors Journalism majors Undeclared communication arts majors (We also had an accounting major and a biomechanical engineer. Go figure.) Without a doubt, when you wanted to know who was being the most obnoxious twit on the floor, it was a film major. Last year, I flipped on the TV and Sci-Fi's Exposure came on... and it took me twenty minutes to explain to Neal why I was frothing at the mouth and swearing at the screen. One of my former floormates-- the bigoted, obnoxious, loudmouthed film-major asshole who kept asking me and my roommate to write his papers for him that entire year-- was being hailed by Roger Ebert as the Next Big Thing. TANJ, I'm telling you. :)

Well, personally, I think I'd be an excellent film student, considering that I could get A's, maybe, make great works and still not know a DAMNED thing about it, and I'd never tell anybody anyway. Call me an asshole or what not but I like to get people feeling emotions that they don't like, like surprise. Of course, even in the world of music you have obnoxious people. Let me just say this: "I will never be a film major" and "I don't care if you have been taking voice since you were five, you STILL have sucky vowel shape!" Hmmm...tangent, yes? ~Yes, the CHILD. |

Whydoesn't anyone remember the old animes like >Captain Future or Queen Millenia or Odysseus31 >anymore? :( > Ah well, back at university our Anime Society got started mostly because the organiser promised to show Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31 (same as Odysseus31 I think). Four _hundred_ people joined in the first week. Average meeting attendance: 100. drakensisthered

>"Going to a video store and seeing HALF the anime >section taken up by DBZ is a bit irritating"Half? Is that all? Down here, I've seen entire video stores with nothing but that show in their anime section. When I asked the guy at the counter if he was going to get some decent anime in, he just looked at me like I was crazy and said 'we've got the entire Cell saga, what more do you want?' >I mean, when they become more powerful they suddenly >turn into Aryan Nation poster children! <Blond hair, blue eyes, bad >attitudes... think about it> Buddy Hackett once said that he noticed that all the ski instructors had blond hair, blue eyes, and 26" waists. So, when he went to learn how to ski (Buddy Hackett was short, squat, and very dark), they put him into a pair of ski pants with a 26" waist... and when they zipped them up, his eyes turned blue and his hair turned blond :). -- Sean -- Rabid Crack Weasel #42 http://www.thebrokenlink.org The Broken Link 4.0 is live!
