"Mac is not..."
|
In regards to supposition that 'Mac' McKenzie might be some flavor of Vorkosigan... I must reply that Lt. Cdr. Count Piotr M. Vorkosigan, CFMF/Barrayaran Star Empire, and Vice Admiral Miles Naismith, CFMF, both object strongly to such a comparison. Seriously, Mac is -capable- of fighting if he really needs to- as a shipowner's son, he's been trained to repel boarders and defend himself in firefights or barroom brawls. He does share a measure of the Vorkosigan stubbornness, in that once he sets himself a goal he does anything and everything necessary to achieve it and doesn't regard distractions. If he sees something that he thinks needs doing, he will do it. That is the be-all and end-all of his leadership skills. As revealed in Reflections, Mac does not -want- to be a leader. He has set himself a goal with specific steps in mind- he's going to be an architect or shipwright, and one of the very best. That's why he's so distracted most of his time- three-quarters of his mental processing capacity is usually occupied in studying or reviewing information he needs, or feels he needs, to achieve his goal. There are things more important than Mac's career, though, and when they crop up Mac will take time out to do something about them. (Preferably something untraceable, like say a hundred pounds of very expensive pet food delivered to someone's dorm room, bill recipient.) Friends and family fall into this category; so does justice. Society, however, does -not-, which is why G'Kron had to drag him to the Formal, and why the non-Galaxy House Duelists saw Mac so seldom. It should be noted that Mac shares very, very few classes with any of the other characters. He's placed out of quite a few classes, including Salusian and Klingon 101, and he's pushing himself into every advanced physical-science and mathematics course he can get into. He's not a wunderkind or a genius of any sort, merely focused to a laser-fine intensity. Mac is not hyperactive, not short, not crippled, and does not free-associate at random. His emotional control is tight enough that he could, with pointed ears, pose as a Vulcan for short periods of time. He has never considered suicide, hates risks, and thinks through any decision before taking action. He is not Miles Vorkosigan in any incarnation; he is, in fact, typical of that part of the Freespacer nation which is -not- overly eager to join the CFMF and kick galactic ass. If he resembles any character, he's a very, very quiet Jeremy Feeple. Redneck Red wizard needs money badly... www.wlpcomics.com White Lightning Productions - don't tell the Pope |

I always got the impression that Mac was the quiet guy who you had in homeroom that you knew nothing about and never talked to, and 20 years down the line you see his name mentioned in the paper for something big (like designing a fancy bridge or something) and go, "Him? That guy did what? I don't believe it!" And then you find out at the next reunion that he was responsible for most of the unclaimed practical jokes too... I never really meant to suggest that he was. But the idea of Ivan Vorpatril being involved in this story in any manner at all, now, that truly, truly scares me..... -- "Eat hot blazing photonic pulse fire, you alien invading human-abducting saucer-alien bastards!" -- Captain of EAS Bellerophon, firing on a Vree cruiser. -- Croaker RCW #mc2 "When in doubt, shoot something. (as of 2405) Nanami Kondo, who captained the CFMF Camelot at Wilderness and Zeta Cygni II; Between her and Aral, JJ Condorcet XIX had a turn. It's all part of the Fleet faction in Freespacer politics being in the ascendant; I may or may not explain that when I have more time. >Found and read. Hrm. Things that make one go "uh-oh". > >So, who was Ezar's regent, then? Vordarian? Vorrutyer? There was no regent. Prince Serg Vorbarra died at Escobar at the head of a Barrayaran invasion fleet... thwarted by a combined Escobaran, Starfleet and CFMF force commanded by Aral Vorkosigan. Shortly thereafter, the last Vorbarra heir, Serg's son Gregor, vanished under mysterious circumstances. Ezar died five weeks after Gregor's disappearance, and the crown passed with barely a ripple to Vidal Vordarian, although a brief war over the inheritance of the Vorbarra District caused some deaths and damage in Vorbarr Sultana. As for what happened after... that's the subject of a story currently in progress. Redneck Red wizard needs money badly... www.wlpcomics.com White Lightning Productions - don't tell the Pope |

Obviously not. }:-{D I'm going to have to turn 'Elements of Command' into an episodic story, it looks like, just to satisfy curiosity... >>Ezar died five weeks after Gregor's >>disappearance, and the crown passed with barely a ripple to Vidal >>Vordarian, although a brief war over the inheritance of the Vorbarra >>District caused some deaths and damage in Vorbarr Sultana. > >Ugh. What a scum bucket. How awful. Now, now. Vordarian isn't so much power-hungry for its own right as he is power-hungry to preserve and protect traditional Barrayar. All the atrocities of his reign have been atrocities of omission rather than commission, in that he is -very- conservative and, following the death of the Princess-Widow (whom he married), somewhat bitter. And more importantly, he has kept Barrayar whole, independent, and out of major trouble- he even managed neutrality during the GENOM war...
