"Ultraman Trigger"

This year's Ultra-series started today, with the first episode released worldwide (with English subtitles) on Tsuburaya's YouTube channel. It seems to be a departure from the last few series' interconnected storyline, which links to the original "Land of Light" origin for the Ultras, and is instead evidently a sequel to the first Ultra series of the Heisei era, Ultraman Tiga (1996), which was set in a different timeline from the Shōwa-era series (OG Ultraman through Ultraman 80).

(I base this conclusion on two factors: First, Trigger strongly resembles Tiga, including his power stunts, and second, the full title of the series is actually Ultraman Trigger: New Generation Tiga. :)

This is an interesting choice, since to the best of my knowledge, although a number of the modern-era shows have obliquely included Tiga himself (usually by using him as an ingredient in one or another of the "power fusion" concepts that the last decade's run of series has leaned heavily on), his actual timeline hasn't been referenced since Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey, the movie that wrapped up his original series. It makes some numerical sense, though, when you consider that this year is the 55th anniversary of the original show,* and Ultraman Tiga was the 30th-anniversary Ultra-series (and is now 25 years old itself).

Ultraman Tiga was the first Ultra-series in 16 years when it aired, and it introduced a number of gimmicks that became standard fare in future series--most notably, Tiga was the first Ultra to have more than one "mode", a trick they repeated throughout the Heisei-era shows and which then evolved into the "fusion" mechanic that they've been doing more recently. Trigger has gone back to the multi-form trick, although with the new twist of using highly toyetic power-up gadgets like all the "fusion" Ultras have had to accomplish it.

After only one episode, which introduced the hero and the setting but not the Obligatory Wacky Supporting Cast of Space Defense Force Characters (they're coming next week), it's too early to tell if this particular variation on the theme is going to work, but it looks reasonably promising to me. The only thing about episode 1 I really didn't get on with was the CG in the fight scene, not because it was unconvincing CG (it wasn't), but because the editors went nuts with the camera angles, because they could, and it got a little Dramamine-y after a while. Hopefully they'll ramp back on that as the series goes on, having gone house with it in the first episode to razzle-dazzle the punters. I seem to recall something similar having happened early in Ultraman Z, which I am woefully behind on and should try to catch up with sometime soon.

Also, completely at random but of note: Unlike Tiga's colortimer, which was a rounded bubble thingy, Trigger's is a narrow diamond shape--almost exactly like I envisioned Ultraman Dash's in Silver Guardian / Code Name: Ultra. :)

* In fact, tomorrow--well, technically today, July 10--is the 55th anniversary of the original Ultraman's announcement, and Tsuburaya is observing the occasion as "Ultraman Day". They're celebrating with a special PPV livestream this evening.
