"Also: Holy crap, yo."

   Inside the TARDIS I found an old shoulder bag, a promotional item from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. It had a bunch of randomly assorted documents that I would guess were grabbed out of the dry sink in my old living room when Dad was moving out of the house and stuffed in there for safekeeping. Among the items there contained:

- A large manila envelope stuffed full of opened mail from 1991-92, mainly pertaining to my financial aid arrangements at WPI;
- A copy of Mecha!, a tabletop miniature wargame that I don't think I've ever actually played;
- A copy of the 1991 edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students, which my parents bought because I was listed in it (which was the publishers' whole idea in producing it, I'm sure);
- A fistful of Amber Diceless Roleplaying character sheets depicting ADR versions of the main characters from my old Marvel Super Heroes game, including the Seventh Doctor and Ace, apparently prepared when we were thinking of changing game systems (which, to the best of my recollection, we never actually did);
- A fragmentary 7-and-Ace story keyed off those writeups which appears to contain a modified framework of the "Don Griffin becomes a Time Lord" development from the game, which could be argued to have been my attempt at "novelizing" that part of the campaign, and which is really quite bad, though it does contain a few good Ace lines ("Why am I always the one who has to ask what everybody else is bloody talking about?"); and
- A printout of what I presume - I hope - is the earliest surviving MSH-related story. Well, part of one. It purports to be an issue of The Guardians of Vacationland depicting part of a multi-issue story arc. It's mostly about my pal Mike Shaw's character and his big villain possession arc for the year (TGoV was an X-Men-related title, it had to have one), but Don makes an appearance, so early in his career he wasn't a Time Lord yet and still had my own name, so that must have been written circa 1987. It's, oh, oh my God it's so bad.

Although even in this there's one nugget I can probably use elsewhere. Or could have, anyway. At one point in his brief appearance, proto-Don makes a remark in Latin to Jean Grey that I wish I'd remembered when they had their little moment in Lost and Found: "Agnosco veteris vestigia flammae," a quotation from Virgil's Aeneid. (It means "I recognize the vestiges of an old flame." How the hell I knew that in 1987 I surely couldn't tell you. Maybe we did a thing on the Aeneid in Language Arts and I've since forgotten all about it.)
