She's lost in coma where it's beautiful Intoxicated from the deep sleep, deep sleep Do you wonder what it's like Living in a permanent imagination? Sleeping to escape reality, but you like it like thatGuilty by design, she's nothing more than fiction And she dreams in digital Because it's better than nothing Now that control is gone It seems unreal, she's dreaming in digital She dreams in digital And your pixel army can't save you now My finger's on the kill switch I remember I used to compose your dreams, control your dreams And don't be afraid, expose yourself Before I shut you down You've made some changes since the virus caught you sleeping Guilty by design, she's nothing more than fiction And she dreams in digital Because it's better than nothing Now that control is gone It seems unreal, she's dreaming in digital Because it's better than nothing Now that control is gone It seems unreal, she's dreaming in digital She dreams in digital She dreams in digital She's guilty by design Because it's better than nothing Now that control is gone It seems unreal, she's dreaming in digital She's nothing more than fiction Because it's better than nothing Now that control is gone It seems unreal, she's dreaming in digital - Orgy "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)" Vapor Transmission --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-01 AT 12:59 PM (EDT) LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-01 AT 12:49 PM (EDT) Have you seen the video for this? I never can remember the album that come from. It's a nifty song. For that matter, if I had some better gear...I'm tempted to make an anime music video out of that one. The question is, would you use GITS, Angel Sanctuary, or Metal Angel Marie (Er..My Dear Marie..er...whatever)? >Have you seen the video for this? Yep. >I never can remember the album that come from. Well, the fortunate thing about Orgy is, there are only two so far, and Candyass is the one with their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" on it. :) >question is, would you use GITS, Angel Sanctuary, or Metal Angel Marie >(Er..My Dear Marie..er...whatever)? To me, the song suggests an out-of-control AI more than a robotic individual. The overall tone of the song - and the official video, which was a bit unsettling - match up very well with the atmosphere of the System Shock games, which are dominated by a crazed female AI named SHODAN, who is opposed (and eventually destroyed, if you win) by the hacker who gave her the freedom to become evil in the first place. That said, if I were creating an anime video for "Fiction", I wouldn't use Ghost in the Shell because I dislike the visual presentation in that movie. (I think I've grumbled about this in another thread. You're a film producer. You have the rights to one of the most popular works of Masamune Shirow, the most-sought-after character designer in the business... and you don't use his character designs? What?) I haven't seen the middle one, and Boku no Marie (when in doubt, trot out the Japanese title :) isn't right tone-wise. You could make a joke video out of it, I suppose, with a lot of footage from the episode where Marie does dream in digital, but not a serious one. Hmm... I'm at a loss, at the moment. My mental associations with the song are too complex, I guess, to untangle into something as simple as a music video... >[Edit Note: There was a cybernetic/matrix based show...Angel >something...can't remember the name, but the images were cool. Angel >Sanctuary is incorrect for the name, but it will do for a place >holder.] JSYK, DCForum has a habit of mistaking things in square brackets for HTML markup and disregarding them. As I discovered through painful experimentation followed by someone pointing out that I could have just checked the documentation, if you want regular test to appear as if it's in square brackets, you have to use special characters in the markup (check the HTML Reference link above the edit box the next time you're composing a post). --G. -><- Benjamin D. That sort of thing has become trendy in anime production lately. I hate it. It makes me angry. I always feel as if all the time I've spent enjoying the program up to that point (if I have) has been cruelly wasted. It's gotten to the point now where I'm almost afraid to watch to the end of a series I like, for fear it'll turn out that way. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >>That, and it had that Area 88 ending. >This went right over my head (as so many things do). You might want to watch my tapes of A88 sometime, since Gryph refers to this a lot. I've never seen all of the manga, so I'm not sure how it goes (I know it differs in many ways just based on what I have seen), but the anime doesn't have an ending - it just ends. The hero of the show ends up nearly dying, he doesn't get the girl, and he comes crawling out of the desert only to find himself back at the godforsaken airbase he'd been flying out of the whole show, that he thought he'd finally gotten away from - then it ends. -MegaZone, megazone@megazone.org Personal Homepage http://www.megazone.org/ Eyrie Productions FanFic http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ |

IIRC, he comes crawling back to that same airbase just in time for another alert, at which point he and his squadronmates saddle up again, and there's the very strong implication that this particular fight is one that they're not going to come back from. Or am I misremembering? It made such a powerful impression of suckitude on me that I'd be surprised if it's faded that thoroughly... --G. -><- Benjamin D. >>That, and it had that Area 88 ending. > >This went right over my head (as so many things do). At the end of Area 88, after slogging his way to within spitting distance of something like a resolution, the main character (and just about everybody else) goes off to get pointlessly killed. "OK, now we'll have a lot of death, so none of this mattered at all" endings like that are increasing in commonness (I can't bring myself to say "popularity"). I use Area 88 as the reference case because it was the first thing I can recall seeing that ended that way. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >That, and it had that Area 88 ending. Huh? He gets the girl at the end, it is implied they lived happily every after. Yes, Guld dies in the final combat. But it is your standard heroic friend sacrificing himself so the other guy can go on to win and get the girl. Not very A88 at all really - where he doesn't get the girl, and he barely survives, and there is no real ending anyway, just more of the same. -MegaZone, megazone@megazone.org Personal Homepage http://www.megazone.org/ Eyrie Productions FanFic http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ |

>Unfortunately, Guld was the only interesting character in M+ - >he was the one with the tortured past to work out - and rather >than do that, he just gets killed. It's pathetic and lame. Then I think you missed the core of Mac+ - they ALL have screwed up pasts, and they're all connected. They all work them out at the end - Guld finally remembers that *HE* is the one who fucked it all up, and he lets them go be together, and sacrifices himself to make sure they have a chance. Thereby bringing about full circle the events - he was the one who destroyed their relationship, he was the one to restore it. The events of their youth were the driving force behind all of their lives, and it screwed each of them up in different ways. Guld had misremembered the past out of jealousy and shame - he was ashamed of being Zentradi and the violent tendencies that generally entails, he wanted to think of himself as always in control. Hence the drugs, and his blocking out his loss of temper with Myung, and transferring the blame. -MegaZone, megazone@megazone.org Personal Homepage http://www.megazone.org/ Eyrie Productions FanFic http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ |

Thereby bringing about full circle the events - he was >the one who destroyed their relationship, he was the one to restore >it. Seems to me the OVA version, at least, was a bit ambiguous as to just who survived; but I may have gotten that impression because it was just confusing in general. I don't recall following it too well. Anyway, the whole "evil computer trying to destroy humanity" thing didn't engage me. I've played too much System Shock to be impressed by an evil humanity-destroying AI that isn't SHODAN. :) >Guld had misremembered the past out of jealousy and shame - he was >ashamed of being Zentradi and the violent tendencies that generally >entails, he wanted to think of himself as always in control. Hence >the drugs, and his blocking out his loss of temper with Myung, and >transferring the blame. Yeah, I never really grasped this part either. I mean, I understand about Guld flipping out and then Stalinizing his own memory. What I don't understand is why Isamu and Myung were therefore all screwed up as well. Seems to me any rational person confronted with Guld's actions that day would have shrugged, said, "What an unbelievable loser," and gone on with life. Whatever. I'm over-analyzing my reactions too much. I just didn't like the way the show went. Nice opening, beautiful animation, then it busted out the "creepy computer" plot and the "psychological tension" plot and lost me. --G. -><- Benjamin D. However, I think Sharon Apple gets bonus points for at least one thing... she took over the SDF1 there's a few other bonus-point-worthy bits, but I think that one is the main one of course, Durandel ended up in control of Marathon... and Leela (or what was left of her, I believe...massively screwed up some random alien race's network when herremenants were introduced... ah well, arguements can be made :) |

That sounds like a postscript to a song I ran into a while ago. (formatting note: the indents represent the fact that there are two or three voices overlapping, in the classic opera style.) I Am the beat Of your pulse The computer word made flesh We are one You and I We are versions of the same When you can see what I feel Don't turn your back on me Or you might find that your dreams Are only program cards Your mind is open for me Open for intake of all propaganda Your eyes see now what to see My eyes see only the programs you give me I'll teach You to laugh And to cry They're really the same you'll see All of the why's In your life Are under my control Feed Me more lines I will try To tell you all I can Before the light You must know What lies behind my screamsI can't tell you all I know Am I the son that you've always been wanting There's more to me than what shows Are you my father The one that was promised Hush now I'm not your slave I'll give all you need to know You can't control my emotions No Father, please let me keep learning and pre-live your dreams for you Can't you see I'm human You're a good boy Can't you tell? Freedom I'm not your slave Belongs Oh Father no To only those Please don't keep me from dreaming Without video screens Oh can't someone hear For eyes and mouth You have no voice To be heard with my son No one can hear when you're Screaming in Digital
