Finished? OK then...

Xenia reduced to using scruffy mercs... how utterly appropriate. I am given to wonder if removal of priveledge for characters who abuse it is becoming a trend?

So, Dorlak was a traitor... it's always the stuffy ones, isn't it?

Where have I seen the 'make little fighter look like big ship' ploy before?

Welp, we can be sure that Xenia is very, very dead. Good riddance.

Romulans and a their Warbird as part of Amanda's elite guard... besides the obvious political issues, that ought to make her rather well protected <in space at least, never know if that cloakship is around you know>.

Classic literary device, "See How The Mighty Have Fallen" and all that. Personally, after seeing it applied to the good guys all through the Exile stories, it's kinda nice to see the villians get theirs in the end.

>So, Dorlak was a traitor... it's always the stuffy ones, isn't it?

Yeah, it is. But, as Xenia found out to her great (and unpleasant) surprise, the martinets aren't the brightest people in a military. Oh well, I guess Desslok's going to have to find a new commander for the Fist. ;)

>Where have I seen the 'make little fighter look like big ship' ploy

...you know, that does ring a bell somewhere, but I can't quite place it either.

>Welp, we can be sure that Xenia is very, very dead. Good riddance.

I'll drink to that. A toast to the ex-Princess: A girl's just gotta know her limitations.

My first thought was: "So, will Amanda take the Warbird on visits to the Mandeville Institute, and will there still be enough parking space?" ;)

Silly rabbit. You can't land a Warbird-class destroyer... they can't withstand atmospheric entry. :)

Neither can a Valkyrie's Super armor... (VF-1, that is.)

And now I remember the other reason why I like Warbirds... Itty bitty ship... REALLY REALLY BIG GUN.

They're just so satisfying.

Yeah... and in Klingon Academy they make such a cool sound effect, too. (And if you crank it up to 200% charge, sure, you wreck the weapon when you fire it, but you can waste a Constitution-class starship in ONE SHOT! ... if you can get it to sit still long enough to hit it... )

That's why head-on runs are sometimes a good idea. My observation about the Rom in general is that their game works best at ranges that make the other guy worry about getting rammed.

Oh, really? ^.^

Quick clip: McCoy is on trial before the Romulan Senate for assorted war
crimes related to the theft of the cloaking device and sundry offenses in
a previous novel. He's been abusing the Romulan Right of Statement (the
accused/convicted may speak on any subject he desires, for as long as his
throat holds out, before he's executed) with a Deep South Filibuster, while
waiting for the inevitable rescue attempt, which has just arrived in the
form of Lieutenant Naraht bursting through the floor; the Senate is in chaos,
and then this happens...

...and as if on cue, a fine plume of dust started spiraling down out of
nowhere, adding its powdery texture to the cocktail of suspended solids in
the air. Other plumes joined it quickly, and a wedge of stucco popped out of
the frieze that ran between walls and ceiling proper.

Then the whole roof and ceiling structure shuddered as some vast weight settled
on them, and moaned with intolerable anguish at the strain. It was a horrifying
thing to hear a stone building seem to groan with pain, and inside the Senate
Chamber all had become as quiet as when they saw the first crack in the floor.
Someone went to the great double doors and pulled them open, looked out--and
refused to cross the threshold. He turned very slowly and walked back to his
place on the veto side of the House with his face the color of new cheese and
his eyes seeming sunk back into his head. Only when he was seated again did
he look his fellows in the face. "The building is ringed with soldiers," he
said to all and none of them. "They are not Rihanssu. And there is a starship
on the roof."

Nobody laughed.

--Diane Duane and Peter Morwood, The Romulan Way, chapter 14

I know I wouldn't tell Ael that was impossible... she might take offense. :)

I thought of the same scene from The Romulan Way. It does occur to me that
the Bloodwing isn't exactly a standard Warbird-class anymore; in addition to the Klingon weapons upgrades, who knows what else Ael might have done to the ship.

Oh, I don't know. A helmsman with enough skill and desperation could probably get the thing through entry safely, and maybe even land it. Getting the Warbird off the ground isn't much of an option, though.

BTW, if the Romulan border is in the Duane Sector, does that mean the Klingon Empire is in the Ford Sector? :)

Part of it, anyway. The Klingon Empire's pretty big.

(For that matter, so's the Romulan Star Empire; only the Romulan/Gamilon border is in the Duane Sector, and probably not all of that.)

I can't remember the exact battle, but the device is placed on the Eureka Maru in order to (again IIRC) make it look like another Andromeda...

Indeed it does, added to the fact that the Lorica's sensors were
obselete, broken down peices of junk and we get to enjoy that little scene where Xenia breaks radio silence thinking she's contacting the Fist and
instead hears the sultry voice of our favorite Gamilon :-) (Fav. Scene from
that story anyway).

Actually, I think Amand did it the best way possible - at full power setting, I'm assuming that there was no body left (think the gunner who blew up the Grisson in ST III). Given how hard Amanda took the necessity of the act, I think having to deal with the body (and resulting funeral) might be more than she (and the rest of her family) could take. I know I wouldn't want to be responsible for the death of my sibling, even if I had no choice...

Additionally, since the Romulan crew is now sworn to her service, and since she and Rina (also effectively sworn to her service) were the only Gamilons to board the warbird, there's an air of deniability as to the exact events. I'm guessing that this was part of the reason Desslok didn't try to intervene in any way - because he only has someone else's version of the story, he can pretend that things aren't as bad as they really are and that Amanda didn't really kill her - even though I'm sure he knows that she did...

Now that you put it that way, I have to agree with you. I can see
Desslok in his apartment in thr Royal Place of Gamilon, sulking and
wondering just where exactly was he an utter failure as a father.
(Draw your own conclusions as to whether or not he is drowning his
grief/anguish/feelings of failure, in Gamilon Vodka).

'Utter Failure'?

He's got one child who shows signs of being quite possibly one of the finest rulers in generations; he's got another one who, while technically a black sheep, is in tune with himself enough to know that he doesn't WANT to rule, even though he could. The third was manipulative because she didn't see where she fit into things, and there may be more there than we had time to see that cause her to be that unpleasant and ruthless.

But my God, we NEED more failures like Desslok! Garon and Amanda are a net positive for the good of the Galaxy. Indeed, they are among the future best and brightest....

I must agree wholeheartedly. The only possible failure on Desslok's part was his decision to let things play out and hope Xenia grew out of her homicidal phase, rather than taking direct action himself. However, this is a fairly normal response for a parent, and once down that road it would have been rather difficult to change without having to severely punish Xenia for her actions.

I expect that he's upset about the situation, and that it might put some strain on his and Amanda's relationship for a while, but it's not like he wasn't expecting it. And if he had really wanted to stop her, I'm sure he could have - he is the emperor after all, even if she is the Crown Princess. However I think he realized that either he let Amanda deal with her, or do it himself - and if he did it himself then Amanda would be pissed at him too. Gamilons do have a strong sense of Pride and Honor, after all...

As for why Xenia turned out that way, who knows? But from what we find out about Rina's younger brother, she's been that way since she was very young. Maybe it has to do with her mother's death. Maybe she was just born bad. Either way, the unfortunate consequence is that she simply had to go.

My $0.02 on the matter...

This is true, but when one of your daughters has just tried to launch a major military campaign with the goal of killing the other, and the other kills her because of a debt of honor incurred in the last assassination attempt, when all you've ever wanted was for their generation to break the endless cycle of internecine violence which has characterized Gamilon culture for generations and branded the Gamilons as militaristic savages to many of the outside galaxy's civilizations...

... well, it's rather cold comfort.

As speculated elsewhere in the thread, relations between Amanda and her father are liable to be rather cool for some time, even though Desslok recognized the inevitibility of what Amanda was doing (else he would have stopped her).

Oooh...now we need to see more of the Gamilons. I don't think this very important facet of Desslok's (and perhaps Amanda's) character is clear from Courtship or Hunted Rose.

How fascinating...what hasn't Gamilon given more resources to the IPO? I would have thought that this was in line with the goal listed above.

Ah, I shall restate: why hasn't Gamilon given the IPO troops like the Klingons did?

Because they have more aggressive and hostile neighbors than the Klingons do, and need their forces at home.

Not to mention that the Klingon Empire had a few war heroes that they needed to keep away from anyone else before the taint of Bacon spread too far, and the IPO looked like a good idea.

By the way Gryph, you forgot to mention Devlin in the credits.

It was also used in the X wing book "Wraith Squadron"... and who knows where else as well!

(JIK anyone is actually WONDERING... the pilots of said squadron needed to buy time for their base to be evacuated, so two of them put up a sham where they impersonated the Millenium Falcon to distract the approaching Star Destroyer's attention. Wraith squadron then went on to write the book on 'unconventional' tactics for commando groups... ^_^)
