"John Trussell's Language Corner"

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-01 AT 07:40 AM (EST)

Last evening, Truss had a linguistic revelation that I feel rather stupid for not having realized.

We have seen that the klingonaase loan-word kai is in such common use among the speakers of the much more prevalent tlhIngan Hol in the UF universe that it's basically considered a tlhIngan Hol word as well, and has even, among students of Klingon languages, started creeping into Standard.

Accepting that kai, when used as in "Kai the sutai-Tenjou!", basically means "I think the sutai-Tenjou is highly estimable/greatly honorable/really cool/etc.", then, Truss informs me, having spent a long time among the Klingon crew of the WDF Tom Servo, Captain Derek Bacon must have experienced at least one "Kai these pants!" Event in his career.

Perhaps the multilayered explanation makes this joke too cumbersome, but I wanted to share it anyway.
