"Piper Question for Redneck"

Looking back through the archives and noting your refs to the Zarathustran
Fuzzies, I had to wonder...

Which version are you going with:

a) Little Fuzzy/Fuzzy Sapiens/Fuzzies and Other People

or

b) Little Fuzzy/Fuzzy Sapiens/Fuzzy Bones/Golden Dream?

Although I am a Piper fan, FaOP ticked me off... more of the one thing
about Beam I dislike: All Aliens Are Humanity's Mental Inferiors. (Except
possibly those two species that nuked each other into extinction.) Tuning
and Mayhar's sequels were a rather better ending...

I've read part of Fuzzy Bones and all of Golden Dream. Golden Dream does not conflict with F&OP, but Fuzzy Bones definitely does, and Fuzzy Bones is such inferior writing that I am inclined to disregard it altogether. It's the only Fuzzy book I don't own a copy of.

As for F&OP, I don't think that it necessarily implies that aliens are automatically inferior to humans- quite the opposite. The Fuzzy characters portrayed in that book act the most human, and most intelligent, of any Fuzzy work in my experience. If anything, it is the -humans- who come off as stupid. }:-{D

Finally, let's remember that the three Piper novels take place within a few months of one another. At the beginning of LF, the Fuzzies are flatly stated as being unlike any other creature on Zarathustra and living in a very low paleolithic state. In a few months, the ones most experienced with humanity- especially Little Fuzzy himself- can speak a pidgin English, can use modern unpowered tools and scaled-down firearms, and are beginning to discover, or rediscover, scientific interest in how and why things work. Their problem is not stupidity or lack of talent- the jury is very much out on Fuzzies' long-term potential- but their utter ignorance of anything outside of immediate short-term survival.

In UF, the Fuzzies are -extremely- smart in the long term; even after they are promoted off the Proto-Sapients list, they remain 'professional pets' and use the gemstone wealth of their homeworld to insure societal wealth and leisure for their entire little race. They're smart enough to create a system which lets everyone play and relax as much as they please, and only work if they desire to (as in the case of Little Fuzzy himself, who becomes the first historian of his race in modern times).

Does that answer your question?
