"Fine, World, Be That Way"
|
Lately it seems like I keep running across things I enjoy just before they end, or even more annoyingly, I get into them and then discover that they have already ended, usually not long before. The book gets canceled, the series ends, the band breaks up, whatever. In the last 24 months, just off the top of my head, this pattern has applied to: - The Bill - The musical stylings of Fall Out Boy - Phill Jupitus and Phil Wilding's podcast, The Perfect Ten - X-23's solo book - Stephanie Brown as Batgirl - That's all I can think of, but I'm sure there's something else. (In particular, I'm quite certain there's been more than one band this has happened with in the last two years, but I can't think of the other(s) right now.) Mind you, this only applies to stuff I hadn't been aware of before. Long-running things that I've been on board with for the duration, and which ultimately run their course, are a different experience altogether. It's always a bit sad when that happens, but when it's something I've just discovered, there's an element of... I don't know, disappointment, that gives the whole thing a sharper kick than it would otherwise have had. I realize impermanence is an integral part of life, and that nowhere is this more true than in the world of pop culture, but this is getting ridiculous. --G. -><- Benjamin D. This happened to me with Terra Nova. I genuinely like dinosaur shows and was severely disappointing when they said they were not going to spring for a second season. DaemeonX "Never memorize anything that you can look up." ~Albert Einstein |

> - Phill Jupitus and Phil Wilding's podcast, The Perfect Ten Oh hey, I just noticed that two new episodes of this have appeared, one in March and one a couple weeks ago. A pleasant surprise, and quite entirely unexpected given that the last episode before that was explicitly described by both Phill and Phil as the last one ever during the proceedings. I guess they decided that wild irregularity was better than hanging it up altogether (a conclusion I've come to regarding my own work many a time). So that's something! --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam. Since I've been listening to the History Of Rome podcast (another thing caught at the tail end of it) at iTunes (you would probably like it, Gryph) I knew this quote without even looking it up. And yes, yes it must. Michael Michael C. Fortner "Rule 37: There is no such thing as "overkill". There is only "open fire" and "I need to reload". |

My most inconvenient cancellation would be Robert Asprin passing away, so now I can't see what happens in the third book of Dragon's Wild. :P I stopped riding on TV cancellations after Firefly, so I'm only mildly perturbed at Eureka having an ending date. --- "Life's like a banana." *tosses banana into a blender* "Any questions?" |

>My most inconvenient cancellation would be Robert Asprin passing away, >so now I can't see what happens in the third book of Dragon's Wild. :P I know some people who knew him, and in general their reply to comments like that was "Imagine how inconvenient it was for him!" >I stopped riding on TV cancellations after Firefly, so I'm only mildly >perturbed at Eureka having an ending date. That got the half-length fifth season, which wraps things up, so at least the story is told. Just adding that I was suprised to find Dragon's Deal earlier today, although the second name of Jody Lynn Nye tells me that she finished the book for him, so I'm satisfied. If nothing else, perhaps I should pick up the Myth Adventures for a spin. --- "Life's like a banana." *tosses banana into a blender* "Any questions?" |
