I don't remember if we ever mentioned it anywhere, but it has long been the assumption of the production staff that they work in Gotham City.

Especially now that Redneck is no longer around; there was an reference to a RADM Styles that Redneck wound up having to chuck out on his ear to take back command of the Freespacers sometime around the battle of ZC. It was implied that he came from the Manticore system (or maybe sector) and that he wound up as a Freespacer after being bounced from his birth service.

In general, more of a bean-counter than someone you wanted in charge of an actual fighting fleet.

An ego-stroking show for self-proclaimed "sixth smartest man in the world" Walter O'Brian. It's based around the idea of a team of incredibly smart but socially deficient people that solve problems either for the government or on contract to private interests.

The group and the characters would probably work in UF, (better than they do in the RL setting of the show), but I don't know if you would want to use them.

I'd worry about this having been necro-ed, but it's probably alright. Anyway. I'm pretty sure I mentioned this in one of the other "Characters You'd Like To See In NF" threads, but Taylor Hebert from Worm would either be a fantastic hero OR a pretty intimidating antagonist. Or maybe both! Her home continuum is a crapsack world in excelsis and I'd love to see her get the happy life she deserves. Oh, and bring Tattletale along as well, she's not so much a quipster hero as a weaponized smartarse. =]

It's still a great story and I love it to bits, but it's really not at all the kind of work that fits in with the UFverse. However, the actual characters are really well-written, and I think it'd be cool to see them get what amounts to a Reverse Korra Treatment. I also think it'd be cool to see someone fight a Rose Duel with a skinny, gangly fifteen-year-old OH GOD THE SPIDERS THEY'RE EVERYWHERE GET THEM OFF NONONO NOT THE BEES AND WASPS AND THINGS THEY'RE IN MY EYES OH GOD WHY DOES THIS CATERPILLAR BURN LIKE HOT SAUCE I SUBMIT I SUBMIT I WANT MY MUM-

For reference, that's Taylor's superpower. Bad powers =/= bad people. =]

FiMFiction.net: we might accept blatant porn involving the cast of My Little Pony but as God is my witness we have standards.

Also I want to see the Experts of Justice beat the shit out of one of the setting's three disgustingly destructive kaiju. There are kaiju with superpowers. This is exactly as bad as it sounds. So, y'know, bring your A-game, chums.

That was kind of why I wanted someone competent to do it. So many positive Wormfics descend into vengeance porn against her bullies (and completely miss the author's point about how pathetically small they are), or make her ridiculously overpowered because the fan writer doesn't really get how to write smart power usage, or turn into fanwank for the other crossover that gives Taylor an entirely different power this happens all the time pls stahp. It gets wearing. I'm desperate for fics where she gets to stay herself and gets a happy ending, whether in a new Earth or four hundred years in the future in a basement full of very confused people on Zeta Cygni wondering where all the butterflies came from.

But I concede defeat on this issue, and will content myself with imagining the previously-mentioned Rose Duels involving all the spiders. =]

I have read the source material. I don't think Gryphon would get through the first chapter without trying to find the author and beat him to death with a bit of old pipe for heroine abuse.

Completely understandable. It's such a pain to wash out.

(srsly tho you'd get along really well with taylor hebert as a character. and dragon, come to think of it. dragon is basically the setting's most heroic hero and is basically if iron man had the morals of captain america.)

Oh, yes, I stumbled across that series a few months ago. Only watched one episode but I was impressed with the production values. And the writing didn't seem half-bad, assuming the translation was accurate.

I could see these two bouncing around the Claremont district in New Avalon indeed...

Actually, after watching a number of additional episodes, I'm inclined to disagree on the last point. The show's Parisian setting is a fairly substantial element of its feel and characterization, and it wouldn't be the same transplanted to somewhere Anglophone. (Not that this would stop it from being included in UF, of course!)

Note to Gryphon, since he mentioned he hasn't recognized most of the recent suggestions: these are Ladybug and Chat Cat Noir, from Miraculous Ladybug (or Miraculous depending which translation you're watching). High-concept summary of the show: if Sailor Moon were French.

As concept, it's disturbing. In execution, it's rather fun.

He's right about the background being necessary, though; they'd probably be living on some Francophone planet, rather than using the rooftops of New Avalon.

Jillian Holtzmann is one of the new Ghostbusters and far and away the best one. The other three are sort of rather flat, but Kate McKinnon (who plays her) steals every single scene she is in and is the single best addition to the franchise they've made.

(I will refrain from talking about the movie here but may or may not start a thread on it. My gushing over Holtzmann is not to be taken a full-throated endorsement of the franchise reboot, nor is this disclaimer to be taken as an equally full-throated condemnation.)

Ah.

Just for the record, if anyone cares, I didn't skip the remake because of the female-cast thing, I skipped it because I have permanent remake fatigue.

At the risk of breaking my own rule, I am rather surprised that this isn't simply Ghostbusters 3. It would have required about two pages worth of changes to the script to manage that comfortably.

Think Agatha Heterodyne with access to 20th-century technology. :)

How about IPO division or team Overwatch? Though given Gabriel and Jack's backstory, perhaps a division far away from New Avalon. I don't know how many more explosions the old headquarters can take, nor how both men could slip away undetected to become a Big Fire agent and Mercenary respectively.

The hyper-intelligent gorilla with jump jets, rebel DJ hacker stealing from Megacorps, time-unlocked test-pilot, and pro-gamer mecha-pilot are all the kinds of people who it seems IPO might be interested in though.

Even if the IPO didn't get them on board, I can see them as an independent group of galactic do-gooders. Winston is probably from Heston's planet, D.Va could be a Solaris native, and Tracer is probably ex-WDF.

Mei's name and face evoke the Earth Kingdom, but she dresses in the style of the Southern Water Tribe. Between that and her obvious fondness for and aptitude with Weird Technology, I can only assume she is a descendant of Varrick and Zhu Li.

Would Widowmaker's complexion indicate she's from Gamilon?

Roadhog looks like he'd be from.....um......dammit. The world Moose is from.

(EDIT: IT'S HOFFMAN! He's gotta be a Hoffmanite.)

(incidentally, a combination of typo and autocorrect made that 'looks' into 'looms' and I feel bad for having to fix it because *it works*)

Bastion is obviously an old battle droid who went a few decades too long without a mind wipe.

Mercy could theoretically be from almost anywhere, but somehow she feels....Valkyrie Medic, especially with her 'magic' healing staff.

Symmetra may be from the Algo system, considering that she seems to use photon energy to make physical constructs.

Zarya is just Russian. MAYBE from a high-g world, but definitely just plain *Russian*.

Torbjorn is a Dwarf. Honest to goodness actual Dwarf.

And I think he's in denial for some reason, because he insists (in game) that he's not one. Maybe he was raised by humans, who had to explain he was adopted when he started growing that beard at the age of 5.

Heheh. Some years ago, and after many years out of the habit, I was invited to play in a friend's Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition game (this was when 3E was the New Hotness). We had a week or so to come up with our characters before the game started, because our DM was keen on everyone having a Developable Backstory and ran a story-heavy game in general.

The character I ended up with, after much consulting of the Player Handbook and rumination, was a half-elf barbarian/sorcerer called Einar Skinnarland (named after one of the heroes of the Norwegian resistance in World War II, about whom I learned from the late Leo Marks's excellent book Between Silk and Cyanide). The thing about Einar that seemed like a joke on paper, but wasn't in practice, was that he had been raised from infancy by dwarves, and though half-human and half-elf genetically, was entirely dwarven culturally.

Among other quirks of personality, this meant that he was accustomed from long habit to conduct himself as if he were the tallest person in the room—even though, out in the everyday world, that was pretty much never the case, since D&D elves are shorter than humans, not taller as in many other FRP settings. He wasn't arrogant, but he always carried himself with a sort of unreflective confidence, figuratively if not literally looking up to no man. Unusually for a D&D character, he also had a day job (apprentice blacksmith) about which he actually cared; he wasn't just an adventurer.

For all that he came across as a joke character at first glance, Einar was quite a hit in the game (which was excellent, and ran for some time; I actually had to retire from it when I moved back to Maine, then returned to Boston a year or so later so Einar could "guest-star" in the Grand Finale session that wrapped up the campaign). Partly that was because a sorcerer who hauls out an axe and flies into a barbarian rage when his magic is tapped out is a thing that villainous NPCs often don't have a plan to deal with, but mostly (I like to think) it's because the other players thought he was a cool character.

Nice. I'm playing a dwarf myself, in our current Pathfinder (aka D&D v. 3.75) campaign. Ingra Rogarsdottar (who despite the name has a pronounced Scottish accent) is doing a fair impersonation of the One Sane Woman in this band of murderhobos*. Truthfully, she would be happy back at the clan forges, making weapons for the city, with the occasional foray against the drow and the duergar on the weekends, but she went and caught herself a Destiny, and like most skin irritations, it won't go away on its own and has to be treated with a long and unpleasant regimen of care.

Ebony the Black Dragon

(* murderhobo - A current slang for the traditional D&D adventurer, who has no fixed address, roams from place to place, kills people, and takes their stuff.)

It would make more sense than the canon explanation that it has something somehow to do with the hijack-chip the villains put into her head to turn her from a loving wife into a sociopathic sleeper agent.

Because neurology has to do with skin color, don't'cha know.

Yeah, she's cyanotic, and cool/clammy to the touch. Which we're apparently supposed to find sexy, along with the whole "synthetic personality walking around in the body of its first victim, a tool of those who murdered the original Amélie Lacroix and her husband" thing. (And that, IMO, makes the intro narration of the latest trailer even more messed up, since Widowmaker was never a child; those are Amélie's memories she's talking about.)

Aside from the meatpuppet, "she" is, IMO, less human than half the omnic characters. They, at least, have free will, while it's unclear if Widowmaker is anything more than a killer doll.

Point of order.

Rumor to my ears has it that Blizzard's reaction to Widowmaker/Tracer being a 'ship is along the lines of "As much as we appreciate the fanart, guys, Widowmaker is so much more terrible a person oh god you obviously have no idea please don't go there."

So, while I agree that her visual design is pure fanservice, I tend to think that they're trying to turn that into a disturbing disconnect with the inner horror, rather than a particularly weird stop on the fetish train.

Unfortunately, disturbing disconnects with inner horrors are a major stop on the fetish train these days. Rule #34, dude. If Hasbro can't shut it down, Blizzard certainly doesn't have a chance.

In thinking a bit more about this now that we know Gryphon actually knows what we're talking about, I would imagine at least a few of the Beacon students might be Jedi-in-training (and hanging with the Harry Potter crew). Ozpin as a Jedi Master strikes me as very likely, too. Oobleck's obviously hooked into the Speed Force.

And what is the connection between Ein and Zwei?

I recall he saw Volume 1, and the only real problem I remember was that the animation gave him headaches (Which Volume 1 is especially guilty of, thank god Rooster Teeth actually uses animation software now). Dunno if he's seen any more of it. I know some of the other writing crew still watch it, and I've seen some fanart Phil did for a Nanoha crossover on Spacebattles.

Besides making their weapons too consistent, I don't think FI-era Jedi are quite appropriate for some of the Remnant students (*cough*Yang*cough). Ozpin I'm seeing more as an associate of Xaviers, in regards to school for the Interesting. Oobleck... is just weird.

I do enjoy RWBY a great deal, and while I don't think Pyrrha was -screwed- like some other characters brought into UF have been (obviously, this was planned from the beginning, and it didn't feel cheap or vindictive) I do think the entire setting of RWBY could be pulled onto a remote planet almost verbatim. Failing that, yes, the characters could still easily fit in. Her as Themiscyrean fits very well too, as Gryphon stated--she WAS patterned after a Greek warrior, after all. Everyone in JNPR is patterned after a culture.

Not as sure about this. It's great for their powers but is a poor fit for their weapons. And have you seen the leaked Season 4 trailer? Ruby's speed movement got a -massive- upgrade, and it honestly looks less like the Force and more like magic.

>And what is the connection between Ein and Zwei?

That is surely a question for the ages. XD

I do agree that making Remnant a particularly odd colony planet -- kind of like Ragol squared -- would be the best way to manage the import. But that doesn't mean that we can't see Remnans in other contexts. (And yes, Themiscryan!Pyrrha works spectacularly well.)

And then there's this little bit from the other thread with new messages this afternoon:

>Daisuke Ido-Spengler, last seen way back in Scrapheap City Shuffle, is getting

And suddenly I said to myself... Nora's grandpa. Or personal doctor, perhaps.

There's an idea I probably shouldn't stick out there.
A little adventure with the dogs of UF. Can you imagine the chaos Ein, Wolfgang, and Riddick could cause? Add in Zwei and the carnage would be terrifying... and cute can't forget cute.

We would probably go for more of a Lockheed and the Pet Avengers vibe.

Sorry to necro, but having really gotten into the new series of Robot Wars, I would like to ask if Sir Killalot is a minor celebrity in the robot community. Indeed, I think it'd be kind of awesome if he was a mech-jockey, perhaps piloting something form Super Robot Wars, but that's for you to decide.

Also, he had a crap single out in the Nineties. That alone should get him into UF. =]

Also, he looks like this:

Here it is. "Robot Wars (Android Love)". I am so sorry.

Which is worse - the fact that I used to own that single, or the fact that I could still remember the chorus before clicking on that link?

Mind you, I always liked Sgt. Bash more. Something to do with the flamethrower, I think - it's always satisfying to see something set on fire.

   Not a new thread, yet!

And Nono! The Buster Machine â„–7!
In context of NF, she could be redone as Iczer 7. And anti-Ifurita.

And lack of Nova in Cephiro sections saddens me, too.
