"Iron Man background material"
|
If you're interested in learning more about the classic-era Iron Man material that's referenced in TIA - specifically Tales of Suspense #39, the story of which is retold with modifications in TIA #2 - I recommend the Essential Iron Man paperback reprints, which currently run to two volumes. They're B&W line art only, which is kind of irritating, but at $16.99, Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 is your most reliable economical way of getting hold of TOS #39. There's a color hardcover in the Marvel Masterworks series that contains the first few Iron Man TOS appearances, including #39, but it's a lot more expensive. Plus, you're a lot more likely to be able to find the Essential comps without having to go to a hardcore comic shop. EIM Vol. 1 contains the Iron Man stories from TOS #39 through TOS #72; Vol. 2 has the Iron Man features from TOS #73 through #99 (the last issue) and the first 11 issues of Iron Man's first solo book, plus a couple of appearances he made in other books (a guest spot in Tales to Astonish and a backup feature in Iron Man & Sub-Mariner, which despite its title was not a team-up book). Not all, or even most, of what appears in the old stories is directly relevant to TIA - Pepper Potts, for instance, is Tony Stark's secretary and the McGuffin behind the Tortured Love Plot all Marvel books seemed to require back in the '60s, not much like the confident, hard-charging executive she is in TIA (and the modern comics, come to that) - but it's good classic comics history for cheap. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
