"S5M3 A Song of War: a fragment"

A few paces back, the black-clad Valkyrie snapped open the visor
of her helmet, looked up at the towering SPARTAN next to her, and said,
"Hey, John. Long time."
The Master Chief glanced down at her, but if he was surprised to
see her, he gave no sign; just nodded cordially and replied, "Shepard."
Facing front again, he added conversationally, "Heard you were dead."
Shepard shrugged. "I got better. Thought the same about you,
though."
The Master Chief gave a dry chuckle. "SPARTANs don't get
killed," he said, "we just go MIA sometimes."

Dear Bioware,

Thank you very much for creating and sharing with us the characters and universes of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. Even though I've never played either game, I am especially thankful because you created something for Gryphon and Co. to consume, and now they have have more ammunition to add to their creative stores.

To wit: Awesome shit's about to get awesome-r.

Big fight sequence in that comic had two formerly dead heroes using a similar line to each other.

Oh. I had no idea. I've got the first couple of trades, but I don't remember that scene. "I got better" was the standard ha-ha-only-serious response to "I thought you were dead" in X-Men comics back in the '80s, when that sort of thing was just starting to become lampshade-worthy.

Shepard says that, or variations there of, a fair number of times in ME2 as well. That's where I thought you got it but. shrugs

The original version of that line is straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

That's the risk with pulling in from so many sources. People (like me) start assuming references that don't actually exist. :)

I haven't bought Ben the third and fourth trades yet.

(I loved that series. Taking two years to do the character origin? The 15 point Code Versus Killing moment in the final confrontation? Guy Gardner NOT being a complete jerk for an entire issue? Yeeeeeeeeeees.)

That last arc may very well be perfect comics.

And I'm still amused by the fact that an ancient alien armada was defeated with the aid of a hand-written letter.
