"Top Ten Rejected Mac Subplots"

Well, sad to say, we've probably seen the most of Mac in any story we ever will. He's had his moment, and now he's going back to being a very industrious and focused, but otherwise ordinary, high school student.

He (or his meta-self, anyway) is fighting it every step of the way. It's almost like having a teenaged William Shatner in my head, suggesting all sorts of (usually bad) plot points and text in order to justify more screen time.

What follows is a list of the stinkiest of the ideas thus far. Some of these have already been fielded, and rejected, by the Powers that Might or Might Not Be. Others I stopped before they went that far. All of them, however, you can take this to the bank, all of them are about 0% probable for future occurrence in ANY UF fic. These just will NOT happen.

And now, direct from the home office in Flower Mound, TX...

TOP TEN REJECTED MAC SUBPLOTS

10. Mac becomes a Jedi and defeats a resurrected Darth Vader
9. Mac designs and builds the entire new school for the Duelists, single-handed
8. The Dread Pirate Mac
7. Mac begins seeing a psychiatrist about his feelings of inadequacy
6. Mac confesses his love for Kaitlyn Hutchins
5. Mac finds the Claire Bible and journeys to Sairag to face the Demon Dragon King Gaav... whoops, wrong setting
4. Mac switches to lead guitar and joins the Art of Noise
3. Mac joins the Zardon Foreign Legion to forget something-or-other
2. Harcourt M. McKenzie, President of the Federation

and the Number One Rejected Mac Subplot:

1. Mrs. Elizabeth Broadbank McKenzie

In fact, I'm seeing a combination of the two! With Mac's ship being a knockoff of the Queen Emeraldas!

There are worse things.

He could team up with Ivan Vorpatril.

(The more I think about it, Red, the more those two start to seem very similar, y'know?)

what are you smoking? Ivan
a. is much, much more social
b. likes being a hero
c. enjoys titles, but not responsibility
d. finds all attractive girls interesting
e. would have been deeply intimidated by the duelists

Ouch. Mac is more likely to glue Ivan to the fender of his flyer than to spend time with him.

The only simliarity I can see is that both understand the maxim: "The reward for a job well done is another job".

Assuming Alys Vorpatril survived Vordarian's war. Given that Ivan was closer to the thone than Vidal, off hand, I'd say she didn't. But only Kris knows...

Mmm. More in the desire to not be at the forefront of Doing Things. Ivan is, generally, too lazy to bother with heroics, he wants the image without the effort. Mac doesn't even care about the image, he just wants to get by. But they both have that oddball sense of humor, ingenuity, and ability to rise to the occasion when prompted.

But Mac doesn't seize on kittens as deliberate avenues to win women's
hearts. Then again, he doesn't seize on anything as avenues to anything
else, does he? Ivan is just active enough to try for what he wants,
and lets everything else slide by.

It hasn't been in any of the stories, but Redneck's made a few comments on these forums. The relevant links are:

Depends. Mac used a legal technicality and a political situation to extract himself and some of his friends from danger. If Mac wants something strongly enough, it's difficult to say what he will or won't do.

If it makes you feel better, she's alive in UF too... her husband, unfortunately, is not.

A suburb of what some people call 'the biggest shopping mall in America.' Meaning Dallas, TX.

If you want to be technical, Denton is not a -suburb- per se; it's just that the D/FW cluster of cities has grown out towards it...

No, I've lived in a suburb of Dallas, and I live in Denton. Big difference. People in Denton have souls.

A-men. Then again, that has its upside. The nearest good sushi joint is only forty-five minutes away.

>Nice place, for Texas. Friend used to live there. It has the single

Recycled Books is by no means the largest bookstore out there, or even in the city. It may well be the largest privately-owned bookstore within easy recollection, but its distinguishing feature is not size. It's otherworldliness. There is a tragic shortage of good otherworldly secondhand shops in the world, and any place where the owner is reclining in a massage chair wearing silk pants and nothing else while college students are getting lost in the subbasements is a place you'll find me of a Saturday afternoon, let me tell you!

And never, ever, open the door set in the ceiling in the back room near the bathroom.

She had a husband? Oh, yeah, Ivan had to come from somewhere.
Still, he didn't even last one book, so hopefully I can be forgiven
for forgetting the elder Vorpatril. The one that's not Falco, that
is.

Partially. There is still a bit more than meets the eye to Mac, if opportunity should come to see it. At present, I doubt such opportunity will come again.

If you'll recall, the last thing I said to you at AnimeFEST at Nick Leifker's room was, 'Do you know what nationality Mac is?' NOBODY guessed it. Nobody even speculated. I don't know if it was because everyone took it for granted or what... but nobody I -asked- ever knew. It wasn't intended to be a secret, but it did allow for a nice little 'ta-dah!' moment...

Hehehehe. I didn't have to name-drop, even. n.n and I knew you said
SOMETHING interesting about Mac, but I have a memory with the general
retention of a seive, so I couldn't remember what it was. When I initially

In a nutshell, Redneck ha said that the UF-Barrayar isn't the same as Bujold's. Remember Vidal is emperor of Barrayar in UF. Alys Vorpatril was pregnant with Ivan before Ezra's death. Given that Padma was in line for the throne, and that in UF-Barrayar, there is a small war before Vidal's ascensi on, it was a guess on my part that Vidal tried to get rid of his competition before becoming Emperor. Killing Ivan and Padma would accomplish that.

Given the slightly moved up timeline of UF-Barryar, Alys woulsn't be close to giving birth when the war started. That's why I asked if she had survived.

Now it's confirmed that she did. That's very interesting. I am eagerly awaiting Elements of Command.
