"sotd, 2016.02.04 (meanwhile!)"

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-16 AT 08:35 AM (EST)

She paused, then took his hand and said, "Damn you, DJ Croft.
I didn't want to love you, but I do."
DJ looked at her in silence for several seconds, stunned by
all that she'd revealed. When he finally did speak, what came out of
his mouth was so unutterably lame he briefly wished for a thunderbolt
to strike him down for coming up with nothing better:
"I... I'm sorry about the sonnet."
Asuka stared at him for a moment, and he waited, inwardly
cringing, for her to explode.
Explode she did, but not the way he expected; it started with
a tiny, involuntary turn-up of one corner of her mouth, progressed
through a muted snort to silent shivering, and then swelled into a
full-on, clean burst of laughter as she sat up and pulled him hard
into a hug.
"We're like an old song," she observed between winding-down
chuckles.
"'That's All'?" DJ replied.
"You know it?"
"One of my favorites," he replied.

Just as I thought it was going all right
I found out I'm wrong when I thought I was right
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all
I could say day and you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
Always the same, it's just a shame
And that's all

I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you with you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all
Turning me on, turning me off
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it
All of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it
All of the time

I could leave but I won't go
Well it'd be easier, I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all

Truth is, I love you
More than I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
There's been no one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together 'til the end

I could leave but I won't go
It'd be easier, I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all

But I love you
More than I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
There's been no one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together 'til the end

But just as I thought it was going all right
Found out I'm wrong when I thought I was right
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all
Well I could say day and you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
It's always the same, it's just a shame
That's all
That's all

This song, I know from of old.

Another, however, I just happened to first hear today, and the lyrics and imagery (in the official video) resonate for me, in a really odd way... I'm not sure if NXE is the best place for it, I leave that up to you.

Fall Out Boy - Centuries

Ah yes, "Centuries". I get many mental images connected to my work from that song. Most are UF-related, but you're right, there is an undeniable resonance with parts of NXE too, particularly when the video's emphasis on teamwork is taken into account.

We've been here forever
And here's the frozen proof
I could scream forever
We are the poisoned youth...
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me—
Remember me for centuries

Would love to hear/see some of the others sometime. Like I said, it's new to me, and this was the first place it really seemed to fit.

EDIT: I'm imagining at least one circling shot of all the Children (and/or their EVAs) standing together, and the scrolling text of "i have been roland, beowulf..." on a monitor during one of the repetitions of Remember me (etc).

Possibly in part because of the Roman imagery in the official video, but my "go-to" mental footage for this track is the Fortification Hill Massacre on Mojave over in UF. It seems to be identified with Azula generally, in fact, but that was the original image I had.

"We've been here forever," etc. would seem to be the appropriate place for that.

I have to admit I miss those guys. Because of the way the plot arc shaped up, we really never got to have any time with them when they were all four at the top of their game at the same time, which is a shame.

Also, for convoluted reasons, all of this has caused me to experience the following:

INT. - EVA-02 ENTRY PLUG. ASUKA S. LANGLEY is at the controls, eating a small bag of corn chips and directing her remarks to the pilot condition monitor camera in the upper righthand corner.

ASUKA
I know what they're doing. I mean, I know EXACTLY what they're doing. 'Cause they just keep repeating "go faster than any pilot in the history of EVA combat," like that's a GOOD thing. Like it'll distract me from how insane their plan is. Yeah, I get to go faster than any pilot in the history of EVA combat. Because you're launching me into ORBIT.

ASUKA
Actually it's worse than that, because I won't even be able to control the thing. And by the way. Physicists? When describing things like acceleration? Do not use the word "fast". So they're only doing that in the hopes that I won't raise any objections to this lunacy. Because I like the way "fastest pilot in the history of EVA combat" sounds.

She munches pensively on the chips for a few seconds.

ASUKA
(a bit reluctantly)
I do like the way it sounds.

A beat.

ASUKA
I mean, I like it a lot.

Another beat.

ASUKA
I'm not gonna tell THEM that.

She finishes the chips, wads the bag up and stuffs it into a storage compartment on the side of her seat, then gives the camera a wryly pensive look.

ASUKA
OK. Let's do this.

She picks up her helmet from the control console as the entry plug starts flooding with LCL.

EXT. DAY - BAIKONUR COSMODROME, KAZAKHSTAN. EVA-02 is bolted into an open-air cage of girders at the top of a GIANT SOVIET BOOSTER. "WATERLOO" starts playing as the rocket BLASTS OFF.

Random musical connection of the day: the "da da da, da da da-dah" motif in the background of Centuries is sampled from Tom's Diner, whose emotional color is about as different as you can get.

And then there was the time Michael Stipe and Robyn Hitchcock covered it without actually knowing it during the setup for an R.E.M. show, which is probably the best version ever.

Alternately, it just occurred to me, if this song had existed when I wrote that scene (though at the point the scene is set, it doesn't really qualify as "old" as such)...

I confess, I messed up
Dropping "I'm sorry" like you're still around
And I know you dressed up
Hey kid, you'll never live this down
But you're just a girl all the boys want to dance with
And I'm just a boy using too many chances
I'm sleeping on your folks' porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said
"Why don't you just drop dead?"

I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
She'll say "What are you waiting for?"
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

Write me off, give up on me
'Cause darling what did you expect?
I'm just off, a lost cause
Long shot, don't even take this bet
You can make all the moves, you can aim all the spotlights
Get all the sighs and the moans just right
I'm sleeping on your folks' porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said
"Why don't you just drop dead?"

I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
She'll say "What are you waiting for?"
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

Always on (always on)
You said you'd keep me honest
Always on (always on)
But I won't call you on it
Always on (always on)

I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
She'll say "What are you waiting for?"
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

Furthermore, this one would have been the end titles song for the last regular-series episode.

Stuck in the jet wash
Bad trip, I couldn't get off
And maybe I bit off more than I could chew
Overhead of the aqua blue
Fall to your knees, bring on the rapture
Blessed be the boys time can't capture
On film or between the sheets
I always fall from your window to the pitch-black streets
And with the black banners raised as the crooked smiles fade
Former heroes who quit too late
Who just want to fill up the trophy case again

And in the end
I'd do it all again
I think you're my best friend
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right
I'm yours
When it rains it pours
Stay thirsty like before
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right

I'm not passive but aggressive
Take note: it's not impressive
Empty your sadness like you're dumping your purse
On my bedroom floor, we put your curse in reverse
And it's our time now if you want it to be
Maul the world like a carnival bear set free
And your love is anemic and I can't believe
That you couldn't see it coming for me
And I still feel that rush in my veins
It twists my head just a bit to think
All the people in those old photographs I've seen are dead

And in the end
I'd do it all again
I think you're my best friend
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right
I'm yours
When it rains it pours
Stay thirsty like before
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right

Oh and sometimes I just want to sit around and gaze at my shoes, yeah
And let your dirty sadness fill me up just like a balloon

And in the end
I'd do it all again
I think you're my best friend
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right
I'm yours
When it rains it pours
Stay thirsty like before
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right

And in the end
I'd do it all again
I think you're my best friend
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right
I'm yours
When it rains it pours
Stay thirsty like before
Don't you know that the kids aren't all
Kids aren't all right
