"ex post facto background music"
|
I was listening to the soundtrack from the 2009 Doctor Who specials when I suddenly realized that one of the tracks perfectly fits my mental images from a particular part of Knights of the Tenth World III: Endgame. I think the hook was that the very end of it was tracked, in its original usage, to very similar imagery to the first part of Endgame I thought of, but backtracking, I realized that the entire piece of music could be fitted to the scene as if designed for it. Here is the track in question, and here is a basic rundown of how I think it fits into Endgame: 00:00 - The track begins playing at the moment when Utena emerges from the Rose Gate: White light poured out... 00:55 - This part works if you picture the Rune Knights & Co. vs. the Million Swords as an extremely arty John Woo-style slow-motion thing with no sound effects or dialogue, just the background music mixed starkly into the foreground. "Cover me!" 02:00 - Corwin's moment of perfect clarity: Something inside him bent, cracked, and broke in two... 02:06 - Akio throws Anthy into the Pillar Circle: Light surged up... 02:23 - Corwin throws himself against the barrier: The Circle pulsed... 02:38 - "For love's sake... TAKE - HER!" 02:50 - "... oh boy." 02:52 - Corwin's Ascension: ... with a sound like a razor being drawn across glass.... 03:15 - The end of the lightshow: ... he collapsed into a kneeling huddle... Mind you, the lyrics don't fit - "vale Decem" is Latin for "goodbye, Ten" - but the music itself... well, it's some of Murray Gold's best work, I think, and it's eerie how well my mind, at least, can track it to this scene. Your mileage, as always, may vary, but I submit it for your consideration. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Nice catch! Really adds to the scene. > >That damn track still gives me goosebumps a year later. I like how weirdly triumphal it is, given that it was written to accompany a scene that involves pretty much the opposite of triumph. I'd say, in fact, that in general Gold's work has been one of the keys to the success of the Doctor Who revival. Yes, the markedly improved visual production work and the meticulousness of the casting and writing have been big parts of it too, but without Real Grown-Up Background Music, would it all have been taken as seriously as it has been? I'm not wild about his newest rewrite of the main theme - I liked the one from the last Tennant series better - but the BGM for series 5 was particularly outstanding, and really drove home the shift in tone that the production team were going for. Which is why, when the time comes, the leitmotif from the last 1:20 or so of "Amy in the TARDIS" is likely to appear in UF as the "Lieutenant Tenjou, RN, says it's time for action" theme. (I like to think Kate wrote it for Professor Enigma with her old roommate's style in mind. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Absolutely. The revival's got a real sense of audible richness to it that you just don't get on other shows. That reminds me, though, of one of the few complaints I've seen about the revival - not about the music, but about the mixing. It's best summed up in this video: http://youtu.be/bj_LLMOSF_8 >Which is why, when the time comes, the leitmotif from the last >1:20 or so of "Amy >in the TARDIS"> is likely to appear in UF as the "Lieutenant Tenjou, >RN, says it's time for action" theme. (I like to think Kate wrote it >for Professor Enigma with her old roommate's style in mind. :) Nice. Suitably heroic. |
