"Out in deep left field"
|
I was doing some research a couple of days ago, trying to decide whether or not to get into a particular sf series -- the ridiculously long-running German serial Perry Rhodan. (The answer is "probably not," if for no other reason than that the local used bookstore doesn't have the first seven volumes.) Anyway, there were two oddities that caught my attention. The first, and the more generic of the two, is simply that near the beginning of the saga Rhodan and crew go on a quest for a legendary source of immortality, are granted it, and spend the next several thousand years trying to unite the Milky Way and points south. The other, more suspicious bit is the character Atlan. He's a great leader from a warrior race, ally (usually) of the heroes, spent thousands of years in suspended animation on Earth... and his alias, when passing for Terran, is Olaf Peterssen. Coincidence, or have some of you read the series? --The Evil Midnight Lurker what Lurks at Midnight "An object at rest--CANNOT BE STOPPED!!!" |

interesting, but when were the original books written? And even if it was inspired by UF, taking inspiration from a thing is common and repeating themes from other works is common as well. And of course, its not like the UF authors can claim copywrite infringment :) ****************************** Remember, two wrongs do not make a right, but three lefts do. And of course, >its not like the UF authors can claim copywrite infringment :) ...I was asking whether the UF authors were inspired by Rhodan. That series started in the 60's (and is still going strong, one story a week, to this day). --The Evil Midnight Lurker what Lurks at Midnight "An object at rest--CANNOT BE STOPPED!!!" |

>Coincidence, or have some of you read the series? I've never heard of it, as far as I know. I can't speak for the others, of course, but if they have, it's never come up. --G. -><- Benjamin D. (shrug) Now it's got me interested to the point where I might just go and read enough to see if Atlan and Optimus would get along. :) --The Evil Midnight Lurker what Lurks at Midnight "I got legs baby--I'M ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!!!" |
