My senior year, the school threw a winter carnival, complete with sledding, and I indeed turned up with the giant inner tube from a piece of woods equipment called a skidder, which had to be rolled with a person wedged into the hole in just this fashion. Sylvie's heroic ride clear over the Cyclone fence onto the field beyond was carried out by a classmate of mine.

Thanks for posting these, by the way. It's quite interesting to see how it all came together.

Hope this doesn't violate the don't-revive-dead-threads rule too badly, but I was re-reading this particular annotation in conjunction with its associated story and I suddenly realized, after doing a little Googling, that I know Lesser Mazinger's namesake, Great Mazinger, very well. When I was living on Okinawa in the mid-1970's (I was 10 or so then), I had the opportunity to watch several of the works of Go Nagai on their original run on Japanese TV - not only Great Mazinger, but also his Grendizer (or, if you like, Grandizer), and many other classic "Super Robot" series, of whom my favorites were Brave Raideen, Choudenji Robo Combattler V and Daiku Maryu Gaiking. I didn't understand the dialogue, of course, but it's an interesting commentary that I very seldom ever had any real trouble understanding what was going on! To this day, I still have a collection of metal toys from these series, which hold pride of place on the top shelf of my entertainment-center-cum-bookcase just a few feet away from where I'm typing this; I will have to see, if anyone is interested, about getting digicam images of them sometime. One of the first things I ever did when I got access to the Internet back in 1994 was to go looking for anything I could find on those beloved old shows, but I couldn't find anything on them at the time. Thanks to the memory jog this annotation gave me, though, I went to Google and thence to Wikipedia, and found links to all the aforenamed series, and many more besides.
