"Oh, which reminds me,"

I picked up DC Comics Presents Minimalist Teasers for Six Upcoming Titles Disguised as an 80-Page Giant - er, I mean, DC: Brave New World - a bit ago, and I'd like to offer a gigantic gold-tipped fuck you in the ear to the genius who decided that killing off Mary Marvel was a good plan.

The way it's presented, either they just played it like that to shock people into buying the first issue of the new series, which is fucking cheap, or they actually killed her off in a stupid and ignoble manner.

Either way, fuck that.

I was going to reply with "don't worry, I'm sure it'll be OK", but I just read an interview with Judd Winick....

The Marvel family is fucked.

... which you didn't link, but Ardie found me this one.

Judd was already On Notice for what he did to Green Arrow. I think we can now safely consider him Dead To Me, along with the Idiot God DiDio'Sothoth, his messenger Johnsathotep (the Crawling Chaos with a Thousand Shitty Plots), and the rest of DC's thousand blind, amorphous flautists who endlessly caper and dance to keep the monster penned at the center of the universe.

Sorry about that. As it happens, that was the same interview, although I saw it on it's original site.

I can't believe this is the same man who created Barry Ween, Boy Genius.

Yeah, I'm reading the Newsarama version now. Particularly liked this bit by commenter MacQuarrie:

Relevant? Why on earth would anyone want to do that?

Captain Marvel was NEVER relevant and never should be. He was fun, charming, whimsical, entertaining, the essence of good comics.

Judd Winick should not be allowed within a hundred miles of Shazam. He doesn't get it. DC is completely missing the golden opportunity.

Which leads me to the synthesis of the Captain Marvel bit with the Iron Man stuff from the other thread:

What do comics publishers have against the period piece, which is a staple of movies, novels, and lots of other serialized/ sequential forms of entertainment? Why do they hate America? ;)

That's Corporate America for you. All they see is the freakin' dollar signs and they figure that stupid people are the majority of young Americans. Just like these big oil companies. They figure that America will eternally keep on paying higher and higher prices at the pump despite the fact that Alternative Fuels are almost readily available.

I'm forced to point out here that I'm not entirely correct. The comic companies *will* take a chance on period pieces...

if Garth Ennis writes them, and they're set in the African desert in WWII.

There are a lot of those at my house. Garth Ennis really likes him some WWII action. I'd like to see *anyone* else write *something* else that's a period piece. ;)

I KNOW!

It makes my head hurt when I try to rectify that, so lately I've been doing my best not to think about it... And watching copious amounts of W.I.T.C.H. to make myself forget Juniper Lee.

Was this the one that hadher falling from the sky shouting "Shazam! Shazam!" as she went? I was under the impression that was a cliffhanger. Did they actually, really kill her off?

Probably not, and it was just a lame 'SHOCK TWIST/CLIFFHANGER!' that's so damn popular in comics.

Of course, we won't get confirmation of this until issue... three, I'd say. After all, first you have to have some extra blood and gore, along with a flashback sequence that details the origins of the heroes (As retconed to be dark, gritty and dramatic by the current writer), along with yet another retelling of the latest world-breaking crossover that changed the heroes forever... Then she'll make a dramatic reveal at the end of issue 3. Unless the shock value failed to pull in fans of my favorite Marvel, and then she'll be dead. Possibly a zombie. With blood, gore and demons.

Mea culpa.

I'd seen scans from that issue, but wasn't sure which comic or issue number it was from. Reading that post and remembering the scans, I thought they actually shown her going splat. But, yeah, either way, to quote, "fuck that."

I'm not a big fan of Mary Marvel, but from the times I've seen her, she's a better character being played as the straight man... Not as Buster to Judd Winnick's Mythbusters.

From what I know of current comics management policy (read: reading discussions here at EPU), that's probably correct but My God, man, must we give these madmen ideas?

God, I love that as a term. The entire metaphor being he's not even competent enough to be properly EVIL.

(As opposed to Garth Ennis, who had some stuff in Preacher that made me think the man has relatives in Hell in management positions.)

I wouldn't want DC to touch Mythbusters, but looking at scans from Kingdom (or Kingdom Come) the other day, it was eerie just how much an aged Ted Kord looked like Adam Savage.

The second I saw Captain Marvel going loony tunes, I knew the Marvel family had officially jumped the shark.

Go go DC tainting everything they can touch in the name of the "New Age of Magic".
