The way the FAQ reads, a member of the Bat Squad may actually hit _himself_ on the head, just to keep somebody else from getting in the first shot.

How does one become a member of the Narn Bat Squad? That FAQ shattered me for a good three hours at work.

Judging from the bablyon-5 newsgroups, it's self-appointed. Just reply to some horrible attempt at parody, puns, etc with the requisite:

*WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM*

It can also be self-inflicted. Does the FAQ contain the example of pre-season 3 when people were speculating on the new Ranger character coming to the show? Someone "heard" that the guy's name was supposed to be White, so that would make him the White Ra-*WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM* *WHAM*

Not sure if he can be considered a member, but still ready to do his duty.

But Jesse isn't "kinda" a preacher. He's a drunken, depressed, SOB, to be sure, but he's a preacher alright. Not his fault (entirely) that his congregation went up in flames.

Not to mention lech, murderer (deserved admittidly), car boost(what is this obsession that I have with car thieves?), and good freinds with a vampire...that, and he doesn't really want to be a preacher, just kinda forced into it....

Murderer? Not really. Odin Quincannon was the most cold-blooded one, and Odin would probably have died anyway. Whatsisname, the leader of the vampire cult, was waving a katana at Jesse; Jody would have killed him if he hadn't killed Jody; etc.

Oh, there was Vichy, but Vichy killed a Texas Ranger, and would have gotten the chair anyway.

More or less. And Cassidy wasn't a bad sort, just weak.

Umm, I rate Cass in the worst sort of person that there is: Someone who will lie to their friends.

I dont' have the books in front of me, but what he tells the parents(?) of the little kid at DeSade's little party to do is definitly in order.

If you're thinking of Cassidy's friend, the Reaver-Cleaver, he was a reporter who was going to kill everyone there, and had stuck Tulip's hand to the dashboard of his car with a Ka-Bar (or something close to it). And I don't think Jesse was doing that deliberately.

Yep. Cassidy was a scumbag, to be sure, but he wasn't irredeemable. The one shot about the poncy vamp in New Orleans, and all the times he did right by Jesse, show that; but, just as often, he was selfish and weak, and screwed up everything. (However, he was the one that cut the deal at the end that helped everything work out, and got him a second chance.)

Yep. See, he's not at all a normal kind of preacher, but what he dedicates himself to, and the principles he lives by, and his own acceptance of the title, make him something of that. Which is part of Ennis' point in the book. (Ennis' morality is somewhat adolescent, but part of that is just because of the kinds of books he writes, and he handles moral ambiguity well. Could be worse, though -- could be Warren Ellis of the scary politics.)
