"The Shadow and Doc Savage Back in Print!"
|
Since the Shadow has been referenced a time or two in EPU's stories, I thought I past this along. Nostalgia Ventures managed to get the republishing rights to but the Shadow and Doc Savage, two of the greatst pulp heros of the 30s and 40s, and forerunners of most of today's comic book heroes. These are the original stories as they ran in the magazines, and inclued illistrations, and articles by knowledgeable people about the background of the original authors and their characters. http://www.nostalgiaventures.com/main7_sc_22_content.html I found the books under horror in my (semi)local Borders, but they might be under Mystery too.... >These are the original stories as they ran in the magazines, and They do not, however, appear to be in the original order, which, at least for The Shadow, is rather annoying, as there was at least some continuity between stories, so having them out of order and selectively printed by some arbitrary "greatest stories" marker is lame, IMO. The've started with stories that haven't been published in decades. A small number of the Shadow novels were reprinted back in the 60s and 70s, and all the Doc Savage stories were republished, with a half dozen new ones thrown in at the end. There are over 280 Shadow novels and close to 190 Doc Savage stories. As to the "greatest stories" marker, as I understand it, this comes from the original polls the publisher had used. Now, why care about these two characters? Both were the forerunners to most modren comic book heroes. There's a lot of the Shadow in Batman and the other vigilante types, while Doc Savage had a Fortress of Solitude before Superman moved into the neighberhood. Both are unique American Characters that should be remembered more then they are. Craig |

On a related topic, the movie of Doc Savage starring Ron Ely is also back in print, or at least print-on-demand (via Warner Archive). At $20 for a bare-bones movie + trailer disc it's a little steep unless you really want it, but it's in widescreen anamorphic and has never looked so good. Some of it is a little campy (and the rest of it is extremely campy), especially with its Sousa-filk soundtrack, but if you're a fan of Savage, you owe it to yourself to see it at least once. :) I ordered it myself, and here's my review of the disc.

If you search BitTorrent search engines on "BlackMask" you can find ISO images of DVDROMs from the now-defunct site BlackMask.com which have most of them in e-book form (albeit sans illustrations). Back in the day, BlackMask was one of the big public-domain ebook sites, only the proprietor of it allowed his love of pulp novels to overcome his common sense, and started posting scans of said pulps on the site even though the copyrights had verifiably been renewed. Condé Nast eventually got Condé Nasty with him about it, and despite his rhetoric that he should have "squatter's rights" to post the books since they hadn't been doing anything with them for years and hadn't stopped him while he had been, his site ended up getting shut down. (Luckily I had the foresight to order the DVDs from the site while it was still around.) |

>... Chris, please tell me you aren't giving people directions on >where/how to find pirated material (that is, in your own words, >currently under copyright). I looked around at several sites that had copies of the stores for DL, and they have all dried up. Reason most of them were posting the stories on line, it was the only way yo find them. But, now with the stories being republished, the reason for posting them has dried up...... BTW -- It looks like the Spider is joining the group. Baen books has put out a 3-novel the Spider Omnibus, and have plans for a second one.... Craig |
