"First look at Movie Iron Man"

Last bastion of Marvel stuff I can say I enjoy without any qualifications, Marvel's movie division put out this image today:

I approve of the very "cobbled together from whatever's handy" look.

Whoa! That is a lot better than I expected.

I wonder if that's the suit we'll see for most of the movie, or if they'll eventually work in an upgrade during the film.

Great! First-inception Iron Man armour. :)

...dare I ask who's playing Tony in this?

Here's the link to the imdb page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/

Its Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper! I guess thats better than Ben Affleck :) But not the first person I would think of as Tony.

Why not? An experienced alcoholic *and* a talented actor? Bonus! That's one of the more inspired bits of casting in recent memory.

It may be against my better judgement, but I am really getting excited for this.

Other than the "damn, ya gotta have spindly arms to wear that armor" point, it looks good. (And that's been a problem in the comics as well.)

You might be impressed with this particular image then. It seems they actually BUILT the armor rather than just CGIing it, and he has bulkier arms.

According to the Wiki article (which, of course, must always been taken with an SDF-sized grain of salt), Tony builds three different versions of the suit. This might be the second stage, between the "do-it-yourself-powered-armor" suit and the "bleeding-edge, ultra-sleek" suit.

Seeing that was just lovely. The Mk. 1's reveal midway through and the resulting clobberfest are reassuringly good.

Downey seems to be hitting the notes right on Tony, though I'm not as familiar with depictions of his pre-shrapnel'd personality(other than the Invincible Iron Man animated feature), so I can't be completely sure.

Pre-accident, he was a pretty cheerful war profiteer. The entire reason he went to Vietnam was to see how he could sell more weapons to the army. The accident, and having to dramatically re-evaluate what he was doing with his life as a result, are part of why he's such an interesting character.

That's part of why Iron Man was such a good read when I was growing up, and the current books piss me off so much, but that's another rant.

I think that the way Downey's playing him in the "modern" version is pretty much perfect. :> I'm really excited about this film from top to bottom.

That's a little dumb, given that that song isn't about the Marvel Comics character, but I suppose I can see why they'd have seen it as pretty much inevitable.

Nice-looking trailer. Mind you, it's going to have to be a damn good movie (in very specific ways) to get me to take Marvel off the Dead To Me list and actually go see it...

To each their own, but...I don't see what Marvel being on your Dead To Me list has to do with seeing the movie. Marvel's pretty much on my Dead To Me list after their recent crap, and I intend to see the movie. It's been my experience that movies tend to be better than their comic book analogues.

Of course, now...I did like Ben Afleck as Daredevil, so even I question my sanity.

This one looks pretty good, though.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. I see the movie, Marvel gets my money, which I presently don't want them to have.

Ah, in that case, I see your point. I was wrongly assuming you didn't mind giving them money for things that weren't bad. Mea culpa.

*scratches head* Didn't you buy that Iron Man DVD movie after Marvel went off the deep end?

No, I'm pretty sure that was before the final straw fell.

Kind of bummed about missing Doctor Strange, though. The preview on the Iron Man disc looked pretty cool.

See if your local library will get it. That way you'd get to see it but won't have to give them any money.

OK, so I got to see this while it was up.

And at NO TIME was there any Black Sabbath.

There was some Heavy Guitar Rock, but it was, if I recall correctly, AC/DC's 'Back In Black'.

   1. The guitar riffs while the Mk 1 was bashing & smashing.

2. The (admittedly, obvious) lyric over the credits at the end.

Both from the same song.

Could be wrong, but I think that was "Highway to Hell"... I think. Maybe.

I'd go back and check, but I procrastinated and didn't bother to grab the clip while it was up.
