After picking up a copy on Friday after work, I just got through watching all 2.5 hours of the new dvd release of Superman: The Movie.Wow.
Anyone who ever loved this movie with the means (and preferably the sound system) do pick it up. The restoration and the new transfer are simply amazing, and the remix doubly so. The break into the opening theme after the intro choked me up--with any luck this bodes well for other classic John Williams' scores, like, say, when the Star Wars dvd's finally hit.
A few years back when Warner Brothers was batting around a new Superman movie--to the point of having Tim Burton and Nick Cage signed on in a pay or play deal (The project never played, and yes, they did get paid, so WB is already something like $30mil in the hole on that project. This town never ceases to amaze me.)--I was pretty caught up into it. I have a friend who swore by the original Kevin Smith script and followed it closely. I made a comment to him earlier this weekend after flipping through parts of the new disc to make sure it worked on my player to the effect of, "I wonder if we really need it." And I wonder even more now. Not that anyone who decides these things is listening, this is more a sreaming into the wind kind of thing.
But, then, they did make Superman IV, so I guess there's nowhere really to go but up. But, still...

Anyway, that's my mini-rant. Go get the disc if you care. It's worth it if you do.
