"Weirdness with tables..."

Some of the tables are wrapping in the middle, generating things like conferences labled, "Truss" or other fun things that are text in the boxes of some of the other table cells.

Anyone else seeing this, or is my copy of mozilla having hysterics again?

I haven't seen this myself, and I run Mozilla. But DCF's HTML is very much not W3C compliant, so there is the chance it is causing trouble.

I recently got off my (mental) ass and started working on the specs for the planned new forum software again. Hopefully I can keep my spirits up and keep working on it.

Are you interested in public comment on the specs? I.e., once they're semi-ready, could you stick them up somewhere so folks could make suggestions?

Probably not for a while. Like Gryph, I'm a control freak. One of the reasons I want to do this is because it seems like it could be fun to create forums that do things they way *I* want them to. I'm working with Jer and Josh since they're old friends and we have similar views on things, and they know SQL better than I do. :-)

But we're deliberately not making it some open project because then it becomes a management thing and that makes it un-fun.

We probably won't make anything public until we have a lot more work done and the basic architecture is set, etc. We're not looking to create the ultimate forum, just something that does a lot of the things we've wished for that no one else has bothered doing. A lot of the stuff are things I looked at adding to DCF, but decided it was just too much work to glue things onto the core of DCF because of the design decisions that were made.

I like the overall look and feel of DCF, but it isn't that flexible, especially from an admin view. Too many things are global - and it'd be better to be able to change settings by forum, etc. And also to give more control to the user over appearance, etc.

I regularly use forums that run DCF, vBulletin, and Invision Board. And I've also used forums running PHPBB, UBB, etc. Each has some nice features, but they all have some serious limitations too. And I've seen a lot of feedback over the years. So we already have a lot of stuff to work out to start. One of the goals is to design a system that will be easy to modify and extend, so incorporating changes should be easier.

Client.

I've been mightily unimpressed by Mozilla. It's always basically struck me as Netscape 6, only less stable.

Oh, really? I've been quite pleased with Mozilla - it's been more stable than anything I've used since Netscape 3.

You want me to get a different client? Write me a better one. 'Till then, you can tell me all you want that Mozilla sucks, and I will stick my fingers in my ears and sing about how much I think IE needs to be redigested by a cow.

Mozilla, at least since 1.0, is more stable than NS6. NS6 was based off of Mozilla beta code. Mozilla1.1 is much faster and more stable than NS6.

I believe NS7 is based off of Mozilla 1.0.1, which was fairly stable. But it still has bugs that were fixed in Moz1.1, and it has all of the AOL stuff - and some Moz features were left out. I switched to Mozilla after 1.0 was released, and I upgraded to 1.1 when it came out. I've had nary a problem with it on WinME nor WinXP. It has been more reliable than my old browser - NS4.79. I've also installed NS6, and now NS7, but I liked the features in Mozilla and the cleaner (read not AOL'd) interface.

I see this occasionally with Mozilla. Reload usually cures it.
