"Something interesting..."
| |
Something I just noticed from DJ's message via Hal in 3:8: <cite>it, not me. I'm sure you've heard we've broken away from UN/SEELE oversight and sided with X-COM; well, that hasn't made us very popular</cite> UN/SEELE? Is that on purpose or coincidence? It suddenly reminds me of the Fae courts of Celtic legend -- Seelie vs. Unseelie. SEELE, by this point in the arc, has gone from mysterious and vaguely menacing to actively hostile to Our Heroes, and referring to their enemies as UN/SEELE tickles me. Am I totally off my gourd here? -- Sean -- http://www.thebrokenlink.org The Broken Link 4.0 is live! >>Am I totally off my gourd here? > >Yes. > >--G. >no idea what you're talking about Quick explanation, for future reference: In Faerie mythology, depending how far you go and whether or not you believe the bastardized Whitewolf version (changeling), the Faerie courts consist of two courts: The Seelie, and the Unseelie. Seelie are the nice, happy fairies. Pixies, dancing in fairy circles, whatnot. They help people, make pretty pictures, and generally don't do much more than rich effeminate french artists. The Unseelie court, on the contrast, are the 'mean' faeries. They are the pranksters, malicious pixies who waylay travelers. They are the Will O'wisps, and they are the sprites who cavort within toadstools, forcing travellers to dance along - refusal meaning death. However, by no means is the Unseelie court evil, nor the Seelie court good, however. Seelie Pooka regularily steal children and molest travelers, for example. - Sabishi "I know WAY too much about this crap."

>>In Faerie mythology, depending how far you go and whether or not you >>believe the bastardized Whitewolf version (changeling), the Faerie >>courts consist of two courts: The Seelie, and the Unseelie. > >Actually, despite the bastardization job done by White Wolf, they got >the basics correct. The Seelie (Seleighe is a closer transliteration >from gaelic) and Unseelie (Unseleighe) courts were the opposing courts >of Sidhe. It's relatively dificult to find information on the >original beliefs taht gave rise to these, although they exist in >various bastardized froms, such as White Wolf's Changling, and most of >Mercedes Lackey's "Urban Fantasy" books. True. I was, however, referring to White Wolf's adding a third court as THE major player in politics - the Shadow Court. Basically, once enough time passes, all the secret plans that the Shadow Court has in motion will come to fruition, and the world will end. Just like in every other goddamned White Wolf game. <ahem> Well, anyways, in general faerie mythology, the forces of evil are not so well organized, and just generally mose around doing wicked acts. - Sabishii <embarassed that's he supporting himself on this topic>

There is already way too much mythology in NXE as it is, and all of that is Christian. If I see anything relating to the Fae courts, anything with the word "Tuatha" in it - heck, if DJ refers to someone as a pixie - I will run, screaming. ;> Very nifty, though. I didn't pick that up the first time around. Thinking of SEELE as the Unseelie court certainly throws things into a different light... without invalidating anything. Bad! Bad! SEELE is not the Unseelie court. If anything, they're White Wolf's bastardized Shadow Court. SEELE = EVIL. Unseelie = Malicious. -Sabishii Swearing never again to look at this topic.

And, besides, SEELE's far too organized and actively evil to be the Unseelie Court. The Unseelie Court is, more or less, a place for the nastier fae to hang out, as opposed to the Seelie Court, where the somewhat-less-nasty (more pranksters than anything else -- think Robin Goodfellow) fae hung out. Neither one had an agenda or anything. SEELE is more like White Wolf's rather bizarre and out-of-place (well, in Celtic mythology, anyway... in the WoD it fits) idea of Evil Faeries. They've got an agenda, they're organized, and they're Evil Bastards of the sort that the Celtic fae never were. -- Sean -- http://www.thebrokenlink.org The Broken Link 4.0 is live! >I wasn't suggesting actual mythology being intertwined there; more >like a possible opportunistic allusion. And, besides, SEELE's far too >organized and actively evil to be the Unseelie Court. Mythological anything, though, allusion or otherwise. Way too much of that here as it is. Let's get back to gigantic robots stomping around and blowing stuff up. You got spirituality in my giant robo. ;> >The Unseelie Court is, more or less, a place for the nastier fae to >hang out, as opposed to the Seelie Court, where the >somewhat-less-nasty (more pranksters than anything else -- think Robin >Goodfellow) fae hung out. Neither one had an agenda or anything. "Be nasty pranksters" is an agenda. Kind of. ;> >SEELE is more like White Wolf's rather bizarre and out-of-place (well, >in Celtic mythology, anyway... in the WoD it fits) idea of Evil >Faeries. They've got an agenda, they're organized, and they're Evil >Bastards of the sort that the Celtic fae never were. Well, yeah, it's the World of Darkness. They've got to have an evil subsection of every group. (I have a vague recollection of a WoD-destroying session of Mage where the players ran into Nephandi agents hiding in normal society. Except that all of them had black hair, talked endlessly about destroying everything for no readily discernable reason, and all wore little nametags that said "Hi! I'm EVIL!") And the Shadow Court doesn't fit into Changeling, either. It was a desparate attempt to take the more-or-less angst-free fae and make them a little less happy. God forbid that White Wolf actually publish a game with a fundamentally optimistic worldview... -Eliot "Still waiting for Cthulhu: The Dreaming" Lefebvre -=()=- We're only given a little time in our lives to waste. I've got Faerie: The Cobbling somewhere, but I never got my hands on Werepenguins. I also almost picked up Devilbunnies: The Fluffing at one point, but decided not to. See, I love the Storyteller System, but the whole angst-ridden thing doesn't work for me at all. There are times when I specifically seek to destroy the atmosphere that the WoD creates, because when looked at in the right light, a lot of things in the setting are just plain ludicrous. (Black Furies holding up a sign saying "WILL WERK FOR SPERM", Sabbat unable to actually engage in action because they're all trying to diablerize one another as soon as someone's distracted, Wraiths... well, that's too easy, but anyway...) >On the other end of the reference, somewhere I also have notes on the >gameworld use of "Cephalo-Pops -- The Breakfast Cereal Man Was Not >Meant To Know". For your basic lighter Cthulhu fare... I picked up the Sailor Moon RPG about the same time I grabbed Call of Cthulhu. The connection should be obvious - Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon Cthulhu. Earlier this summer, when I drove up to Maine, I discovered that the construction zones created by the recently-launched project to add a lane to each side of the Maine Turnpike south of Portland had been heralded by huge signs along the side of the road which read: TURNPIKE: THE WIDENING I just about drove off the damn road. A World of Darkness game about the incessant political wrangling, backstabbing, cheating and countercheating that goes on inside the world of major public-works projects?
