"S5DS03 - Goodbye, And Hello, As Always"
|
LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-13 AT 06:05 PM (EST) About time I got to start one of these. It's only been since 1994.I've only just started reading; I'll update this OP with my impressions after I'm done. But to start with - Thank you for posting this on a day that otherwise really sucked for me. Edit: The "crypto-lesbian subtext" line completely broke me. Well done. Edit: And finished. While I do sometimes miss the buckling of various swashes common to earlier UF, I love the sense of family and community that the modern stories have. I get the impression that Diqiu is going to be 'home' for a lot of UF for a while to come. |

Indeed. And usually when a bureaucrat is awesome in a work of fiction, it's because they leave aside the whole rules-based bureaucracy thing and allow something out-of-scope to happen that they would otherwise be obstructing. This guy, though, manages to be awesome while doing his job, and showing a level of preparedness (seriously, how many unregistered feral dragons could there be on the planet?) that even Batman might not rise to. Though, one little quibble...he really ought to have a chop rather than a notary embosser, damnit ;-p -- In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree, Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea |

>>Heh, and a whole bunch of other lines did the same for me. > >It may be worth noting that we rather like learning which bits had >such effects. Lest people think, y'know, it's too fiddly to trouble >us with. :) By an amazing coincidence, I'm re-reading the story at the moment. :) Let's see... First evidence that Utena and Corwin's bed wasn't just Utena and Corwin's. "(Pff, your part was months ago,)" Utena replied. "(And frankly not that challenging.)" Annabelle's experiment on the tastiness of dragons. Ikki's "(Welcome to my actual entire life.)" "Don't set government officials on fire." "Does this wear off at some point? 'Cause I have to be honest, it's freaking me out a little." "At least not until Utena and I figure out the fee structure," Utena's "I'm a multitalented woman, but that particular trick is beyond me." Anthy momentarily considered remarking that as yet they -hadn't- all three... you know Corwin's "double take for the ages" Corwin again, losing that argument with several yards of silk "-Look- at all these orange hairs," Korra remarked, scraping her brush. "People are going to -talk,- girl!" "With a tower!" Took longer than I thought, and I'm sure I missed a few, but those were the highlights. -- Unable to save the day: File is read-only. |

>"(Pff, your part was months ago,)" Utena replied. "(And frankly not >that challenging.)" Utena's not being particularly fair there. I mean, she knows by this point how hard he works. Any schmuck can do the job, but doing it right to a high standard requires concentration and commitment. :) >Annabelle's experiment on the tastiness of dragons. They don't taste like chicken. Particularly reds. >"At least not until Utena and I figure out the fee structure," One of the things they haven't agreed on yet is whether to charge more for the Complete Service, as it were, as opposed to the DIY kit form. >"-Look- at all these orange hairs," Korra remarked, scraping her >brush. "People are going to -talk,- girl!" It was a very small part of the overall story arc, but I've really enjoyed the little sidebar with Niri and Serge over the first three movements. We didn't see them at it much, but I like to think that pretty much anytime you don't see one or the other of them on screen during that time, they're both off in a corner of the courtyard, or Niri's doghouse, or Korra's room, or the meditation pavilion, or someplace else on the island, asleep. Or eating. But usually asleep. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-13 AT 07:35 AM (EST) There were a couple of typographic errors I spotted as well (a missing emphatic hyphen, for one), but I'm entirely too tired to dig them out, and they don't detract from the story at all.The only sour note I'm hitting here is Lhakpa (if that's how her name's spelled). She's... I don't know how to put this. I know it's possible for a person to be that petty and ignorant, I've seen it happen, but it's a characterization I haven't noticed before in an Eyrie piece from someone who didn't turn out to be a villain. Maybe I'm using the wrong word - maybe I should say jarring, rather than sour. On the one hand, I'm looking forward to seeing if she has a redeeming moment, and how it plays out - on the other, I harbor an intense personal dislike for her, the kind I usually reserve for celebrities and high school-style cliques. I wouldn't be disappointed to see her get her ass kicked by Umi, or her sister of the equally-unspellable-name, is what I'm sayin'. I'm about as unfamiliar with the A:TLA canon and its sequel as you can get in the Internet age, so I must say you guys have done a remarkable job of describing the world thus far, but some of the references go right over my head. Maybe someday I'll correct the error on my end, but the discussions I've seen on here don't exactly have me stoked up to see the Korra series. And now I'm just rambling, so I think I'll end it there. Maybe I'll be more coherent after sleep. |

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-13 AT 08:57 AM (EST) I thoroughly enjoyed this whole piece! I do disagree about Lhakpa, though. In fact, reading the sections with Lhakpa made me realize how -nice- nearly everyone else is. While I do most certainly hate nasty, unpleasant people, having -everyone- be that way is what would be terribly jarring. Story is driven by conflict, and not everyone can have intelligence and common sense. Lhakpa -is- petty and ignorant, yes, but in my book that's called "being a teenager". Your comment that she's "that petty and ignorant" (emphasis mine) implies that she's so much more so than average that it doesn't make sense in context. I feel she's being a perfectly normal teenager, and we've just been surrounded by so many exceptional people we've forgotten what the mundanes are like. The revelation that Nyima feels precisely the same way, and is just handling it in a more mature way, is enough to get Lhakpa thinking. Honestly, when she first came onto Nall, I just thought she was a -ditz-. I was disappointed in Nall simply because he was okay with someone so unintelligent coming after him. Finding out that isn't the case, that she's just got teenage insecurity and she's working on it, was a breath of fresh air. (See what I did there?) --------

I harbor an >intense personal dislike for her, the kind I usually reserve for >celebrities and high school-style cliques.Well, that's slightly apt, I suppose. Lhakpa is sort of the closest the airbender kids get to the ANSI standard high school princess type. I will say that we're not seeing her at her best thus far. >I wouldn't be disappointed >to see her get her ass kicked by Umi, or her sister of the >equally-unspellable-name, is what I'm sayin'. I would be, but mainly because that would mean Nyima had resorted to violence. Also, "Nyima" is unspellable? It's five letters. Try harder. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >I am glad to hear that we haven't seen her at her best, though. Mind you, we have seen her at "pretty good" - the scene in Prologue where she's There For Nall, defying even Nall's own expectations of her, shows (I think) a fairly positive side of her. She's just not consistently in tune with that side of herself. Philosophically (as opposed to practically/mechanically) speaking, she's not a very good airbender, and she is acutely aware of that, which makes it worse. --G. -><- Benjamin D. If Lhakpa's the first of the new descendants of Aang who is a skilled airbender but is crap at/hates/is indifferent to the airbender philosophy and lifestyle, that almost makes her a -pioneer-. Face it, the powers and the lifestyle are two different things and if noone in modern memory has actively rejected one while retaining the other, I'd say it's actually a bit overdue. Jinora will certainly not like it, but she may realize the airbender lifestyle simply is not for everyone. Of course, Lhakpa will forfeit any further instruction, but she may keep developing her skill on her own and she's already said flat out she has no interest in getting her arrow. Obviously, it comes with social expectations she doesn't care to take on. --------

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-13 AT 11:05 AM (EST) G&H basically got me through a 4 hour flight delay at BWI. I am INTENSELY grateful.I have to agree that Lhakpa and Nall aren't really looking stellar, but at the same time, I totally see Lhakpa as the bratty teen type, and Nall....well, honestly, it feels a bit like between the fight with Nax and the breakup with Umi that Nall's kinda hitting the angry, angsty, teenager phase himself, regardless of chronological age. (Edit: It also occurs to me that he may be subconsciously trying to "Dragon himself up" because he sees the need to present a better example of Dragonity to Garnet than he had growing up. Someone'll probably need to slap him up the head for that later.) I also got to love Ryo way more than I expected. I actually laughed out loud when I hit "What the HONK, son?" I kinda had this mental image of the Sato family being such gearheads that car / shop terms became their personal swearing language. I have this feeling that "Blown Cylinder" is a phrase that is never, ever, ever uttered in polite company there. I find myself surprisingly happy at the major shift into Diqiu for a bit. Yeah, it's less swords and spaceships-y, but it feels like a good place for having some character moments and a bit of well earned quiet time. --------------------------- We will BUILD heroes! |

For me, the reasons given for Nall's post-hatching disappearance felt sort of "stuck in." Sort of like 'this story doesn't really require Nall once the egg hatched, so isn't it convenient that he's been brooding for a few stories now, which we're now reminding you of in this short scene which isn't going to go anywhere in this story, but we'll probably get back to it some time in the future.' I'm trying to recall Utena's reference to Kaitlyn nearly going on a rampage once. I remember Juri nearly doing that, but I'm drawing a blank with Kate.
OTOH, I *love* how you all have been handling Utena's feeling like a third-wheel WRT the baby. I especially liked her scene with Korra, with all those confused and mixed up emotions spilling out. Nicely done!
(also enjoyed immensely the reactions to Anthy's post-partum physical state <g>) Jeanne

Well, Kaitlyn did go on a rampage, after Kei disappeared and she went all Batman "I'm beating up people who deserve it because it keeps me from feeling". I also really like the various character pieces here, even if there's a character or two I'm not thrilled with ATM (Nall & Lhakpa, I'm looking at you!). I will say that I don't think those two are out of character, so much as out of sorts (Nall - this whole thing with Nax seems to have made him face a side of himself that he either didn't know existed or was in denial about, and he's not happy about it or sure how to deal with it) and just in need of some more growing up (Lhakpa). Yes, what she did to her sister was totally uncalled for, but it seems like she's at least starting to recognize it, even if she isn't ready to admit it to anyone else... Offsides Oh, and that "crypto-lesbian subtext" line nearly had me waking my wife and son up while I was reading in bed last night (he's a year old and still won't sleep in his crib all night *grumble*). >(Nall - this whole thing with Nax >seems to have made him face a side of himself that he either didn't >know existed or was in denial about, and he's not happy about it or >sure how to deal with it) and just in need of some more growing up >(Lhakpa).Perhaps Nall just needs to do some growing up too. Or he just missed learning some important stuff about his own culture while growing up, and is paying for it now? Were the story timeline to go so far, I'd hope to see Cousin Nall (the 1st generation of this sort of bondship) seeing that any errors in his upbringing aren't continued with Garnet (the 2nd generation) Speaking of Garnet, I liked the bits with Azana surrounding her hatching. Glad we got an explanation of why Azana was practically worshiping Garnet, though.

I remember Juri nearly doing that, but I'm drawing a >>blank with Kate. > >Actually, the exact word used was "Kaitlyn's", as in Kaitlyn's mother >- Kei. She knew, of course, that mothers felt protective toward their offspring too - sometimes epically so, she well remembered Kaitlyn's nearly going on a rampage once - but there was a difference. Massive mis-read on my part. Thanks for the corrections. Jeanne |

Really? Hmm. I'd like to think that if I was going to do something like that, I'd just... you know... send him home or something, rather than going to all the trouble of constructing a C-plot for him. But who knows, maybe you're right. I've been having my doubts about a lot of stuff I've been doing lately. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Just my opinion, I've been wrong before. But I hate to admit I didn't realize there *was* a C-plot for him, beyond directing operations at the hatching. Jeanne |

>> some part of her would always feel more comfortable walking >> alone with her thoughts, accompanied only by her faithful polar bear >> dog. It's called being an introvert, and no, being >outgoing and boisterous does not preclude it. > >(sorry, fuller notes later, had to sto and yell at that bit) It isn't so much a healthy behavior for Korra when it was created by being raised in an isolated compound for 13 years (since age four) with her best and only real friend being a polar bear dog that she tamed (who can provide comfort, protection, and a means of intimidation, but can't really talk to you about your concerns). In the old days, Korra wanted friends, but did not have the right social frameworks to really know how to compromise or be empathetic with other people in her peer group (mostly due to not having a peer group growing up). Introversion is fine - I'm an introvert myself. Some of my happiest moments are walking around alone on the beach. It's when a character's social development has been crippled so much that her first instinct to any challenge to her self identity is to either lash out with extreme violence or to go into hiding and hang out on cliff faces in isolation and stew in her own feelings of impotency that it becomes an issue. This statement on the part of Korra and the Narrator is not meant to imply that taking long walks to process your thoughts is in any means unhealthy for other people or the readers. It is meant as a reflection of Korra herself on her own life experiences and her recognizing how broken she was when she came to Republic City and had to start interacting with other people in a framework other than master-student or parent-child. --- Philip

Korra obviously just never pulled enough all-nighters in a row. :) >This statement on the part of Korra and the Narrator is not meant to >imply that taking long walks to process your thoughts is in any means >unhealthy for other people or the readers. Or even for her, nowadays. We should probably have made the retrospective nature of that particular musing clearer. Ah well, hindsight. --G. -><- Benjamin D. And for the first time (for me anyway), Corwin's Asgardian nature firmly asserts itself: "And a tower!" Regarding Mrs. Williams and Mr. Pond: Whatever force is playing timeball with these two must impart a SEP field to their insertions. Loved the Sirius Cybernetics shout-out, as an aside. :) But even with a SEP running full-bore, I'm surprised that Anthy hasn't trigged to them yet. If she has, I either missed it or we haven't seen it on screen. Reading people is Anthy's thing, both the good and the bad. While I'm definitely enjoying these character pieces, I'm becoming more and more interested in just what is up with the Ponds. Brian

>Regarding Mrs. Williams and Mr. Pond: >Whatever force is playing timeball with these two must impart a SEP >field to their insertions. There appears to be a certain amount of retroactive temporal rewrite involved in their displacements. That's apparent in their very first appearance, over in DSMP, wherein they arrive on the DSM campus and are almost immediately recognized by people who have known them for years. (For that matter, they appear to receive an "update" themselves, so that they know who and what they're supposed to be in their new context, which seems to be part of the routine - one of them even quips about never quite getting used to that part.) This, I don't mind pointing out, implies that whatever is behind their travels is spectacularly powerful, or at least operating on a level extremely close to the cosmic base code. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >While I'm definitely enjoying these character pieces, I'm becoming >more and more interested in just what is up with the Ponds. Speaking of, at least a couple of times they're mentioned AS 'the Ponds' like a complete unit. I only really have a layman's grasp of Dr. Who, so I'm guessing they're married in some way? Even if no one else really knows it? Also: "If she starts - " SUSTAINED TRAIN WHISTLE " - worry, it's perfectly normal!" "I'm always going to wonder now," Utena observed matter-of- factly in the quiet that settled once the train was gone. If she what exactly?! Dammit, now I'm always gonna wonder myself :( |

I only really have a layman's grasp of >Dr. Who, so I'm guessing they're married in some way? Even if no one >else really knows it? Yes they are. The punch line is that, in their current setting, no one around them knows that they actually are married - but they're so obviously a couple that their friends refer to them as if they were, believing it to be an injoke. And it is! Just not the one they think it is. :) >If she what exactly?! Dammit, now I'm always gonna >wonder myself :( Some routine baby behavior first-time parents tend to mistake for a sign that something's gone wrong, one would imagine. Possibly to do with teething. Babies who are teething often develop curious habits which can dismay the unprepared, or so I am told. Nothing supernatural was meant to be implied. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >I believe it's much like >the one these guys got. Similar sort of concept, yes, but after rather than during the process, as it were. Basically, the assassin's last surprise is discovering that the woman who just gave birth the day before is fully recovered (not just from pregnancy's side effects, but more importantly, from the delivery itself), and very possibly in better fighting shape than he is. It's a dangerous job, being a svartelven noblewoman, but it does have a decent benefits package. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
