"sotd, plus random news"

I wanna be the richest American
I wanna live out on the street
So many reasons to just do nothin'
To walk around like you're out on your feet
So here we are now runnin' in circles
We should'a listened to H.G. Wells
We're livin' in the age of frustration
We're givin' in but we can't even tell

And all you need is one good reason
One good reason you don't believe
You want a mapped-out blank existence
So you don't feel stupid before you leave

Everybody's here but nobody showed up
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy

For apathy
For apathy
For apathy

For apathy
For apathy
For apathy

I wanna be the richest American
I wanna live out on the street
So many reasons to just do nothin'
To walk around like you're out on your feet

Everybody's here but nobody showed up
Everybody's here but nobody showed up

A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy

Just do nothin'

A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy
A is for apathy, for apathy, for apathy

Green says go
Blood red stop
You gotta hit the bottom before you hit the top
So make the call
Which side you're on
Back with the weak or down with the strong

Fantastic. You, sir, will be joining me on my walk to work tomorrow.

It feels like a lot of attention's being paid to TIA recently. This can only lead to good things.

Damn you, Gryphon. I spent five years of my life writing my own epic BGC fic, and finally put it to bed a few years back.

And now just after listening to this thing for half an hour, I want to go back and write another one.

(P.S. The gain on section five is far too low. I had to crank my car's stereo just to be able to hear it while driving. Then I got earblasted when track six came on.)

Oops, sorry. The first few bits of Part 1 are pre-Medical Adventure recordings and I didn't check them out too thoroughly when salvaging them. I'll see about either fixing that one or, failing that, re-recording it.

Gryphon, there is a program called "mpTrim" that can batch process a group of mp3s to the same volume level. I used it on those files I sent you. Their web page is http://www.mptrim.com/ if you want to check it out.

How's that? I don't have very sophisticated tools, but a quick eyeball comparison of the graphs the two files produced seemed to indicate that the volume level on bit 5 is now about the same as on bit 6.

Okay, I just went and compared the mp3s on my system, and you're right -- they're both the same volume as far as my ear can determine. It must have been some unexpected artifact of burning them to a set of CDs for listening to in my car. But I've never had something like that happen before unless the files weren't normalized to each other to begin with and I also had disk-wide normalization turned off in my burning software -- which certainly wasn't the case this time. So, weird.

My apologies for the false accusation.

Well, assuming you re-downloaded file 5, that'd be because I fixed it. (By "How's that?" I meant "download it again and see if it's better," not "What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" :) The amplitude of the graph it displayed in WavePad was, indeed, considerably smaller than those of its neighbors, so I amplified it to about 150%, so the wave peaks looked about the same size.

Depending on the MP3 player you're using on your computer, it might be correcting for high/low rec levels automatically (I know iTunes can do this, the config option is called "sound check", IIRC), which your CD player wouldn't have been doing.

Ah. I took it as the latter, and just listened to my local copies.

Downloading a new copy of section 5 now.

Yeah, that's probably the case -- at least, it explains all the facts.

I'll let you know how the reburn comes out.

Thanks.
