"you wanna drive like a super villain"

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-09 AT 02:34 AM (EDT)

Mercedes-Benz hasn't made a car I consider really attractive, to the point where I'd actually rather like to own one myself, since the W113 "pagoda top" SL series of the late 1960s. The next SL-class, the R107 of the '70s and most of the '80s, is okay, and I wouldn't immediately resell one if it was given to me, but after that they completely lost the plot, and pretty much everything they've made since has ranged from completely uninteresting to downright hideous.

(N.B. I freely admit that might have odd taste in cars, though. I mean, I like the Mark I Series III Jaguar XJ, to the point where I would dearly love to buy the old XJ6 that's for sale here in town, even though it's showing a generous portion of what the classic car industry likes to call "original wear" and the front seats are in shockingly poor condition.)

Be that as it may, I haven't liked much of anything to come out of Mercedes-Benz's styling shop in a long time. That's changed now, anyway. Gen. Rossum, your car has arrived.

If you can't be bothered to click that link, let me... encourage you:

(Yes, yes, I know, City of... characters can't actually have cars. But if they could.)

I might have to put one of those in the next Iron Age, actually, just for the historical connection.

I love that they say it'll be available in matte grey. I'll bet that looks great combined with the subtle air of menace the car already has in silver.

I tend to prefer silver with gunmetal gray racing stripes up the middle, personally. But I'm not so sure the stripes wouldn't detract from the visual impact of that car, so I'd have to go one way or the other. Matte finish does have a lot of things going for it, though.

Mmm, nice. Sorta like the Scaramanga to Bond's Austin-Martin. (Of which I still have fantasies of owning one, but I've seen the price tags.)

I myself would peffer my Nissan Titan, but that's only because my Vibora Bay Champions character keeps a heavily modified version of one; I blame the fact that she is actually a reflection of MY Titan as well! (Queen of Spades. You know you want her. :D )

   >Mmm, nice. Sorta like the Scaramanga to Bond's Austin-Martin.

Aston Martin. Named for the company's founder, Lionel Martin, and Aston Hill in Buckinghamshire, where there used to be a hillclimb race until racing on public roads was outlawed in 1925. You may be conflating it with Austin-Healey, the sports car division of the old British Motor Corporation, which was named after Austin (one of the companies that merged to form BMC) and designer Donald Healey.

>(Of which I still have fantasies of owning one, but I've seen the price
>tags.)

Ironically, the DB5 is only so valuable now because of James Bond in the first place. They weren't really very good cars. Top Gear did a segment on the DB5 a few years ago; they got one down to their test track and determined that, by modern standards, it's absolutely hopeless. It's a very pretty car, but it was never particularly fast, nor did it handle all that well, and nowadays, well... it's really astonishing how much advanced technology is jammed into even the crockiest cheap compact car these days. Even your mom's Honda hatchback* makes a DB5 look like an ox cart in terms of suspension, brakes (oh God, especially brakes), and so forth.

On the other hand...

>I myself would peffer my Nissan Titan

... you would rather have a pickup truck than an SLS AMG.

Okay, I can see that if you're, say, a builder, or an antiques dealer, or in the business of delivering appliances. But under any other circumstances - and I say this as someone who has a pickup truck - I, uh, I don't see it.

And what, spit in the face of the one who gifted a $27k vehicle all paid for to moi?

Nope, won't even trade that in. I'll just keep calling it my daily driver, despite the low MPG on it. :D (Still, it's way better than an Avalanche, which scored lower in the safety ratings. GMC's AutoShow in Motion is very informative, but they didn't have an Aston-Martin to testdrive--everyone should try it.)

Well, in the hypothetical situation where it was that or not have an SLS, I dunno, I would hope the person in question might understand. :) But yeah, I see where you're coming from there.

>(Still, it's way better than an
>Avalanche, which scored lower in the safety ratings.

I can believe that. We used to have one here, and it had a few things to recommend it - the seats were remarkably comfortable, for instance, and the driving position was commanding, though you paid for it with the ten-minute climb up to the bridge - but it had quite shocking blind spots in the rear quarters because of those flying buttresses and despite its air of vast solidity, I always suspected that if I ever really rammed it into something, that wouldn't end well. I've had several full-size pickups over the years (and a number of truly boatlike automobiles), and somehow the Avalanche, despite being essentially more of the same, always seemed more awkward to maneuver.

The feeling that I got from that segment was more "wow, cars these days ROCK in comparison to cars from 50 years ago."

Also, it got the feeling that I would, in fact, pay very good money for one of those updated E-types.

Yeah, the updated XK-E is nice, though I'm a bit of an oddity in that regard; I would much rather have a modernized version of the much-maligned successor to the XK-E, the XJ-S. I just think they're a really handsome car, especially the coupé. (And there was another Top Gear segment in which James May reviewed an XJ-S that had been similarly revamped by an engineering company - had actual working electrics fitted and so forth.)

As for the Z4, well, again, I'm more of a Jag man, I'd take an XKR over that. Very similar looks to the Aston Martin DB9, for about half the money.

When I was a younger man, all I wanted in the world was a 1986 XJS (Not knowing much about 'classic' cars at the time)

Now, I'd have to say that my 'classic' desire would be either a '66 Triumph Sport 6, or an XK120 (Ha!) I never was really into landyachts (as evidenced by the fact that I'm fairly rarely a cager these days)

1967 Mustang Coupe, please... But yeah, that's a gorgeous machine.

Keeping the CoH theme, hm. Brightsky prefers to fly, Kentucky Smith probably has a Range Rover or whatever similarly indestructible off-road machine has taken its old place as the ride of choice for archeologists headed for the boonies, Valles the quasi-self-insert probably has the cash to indulge my request, above, just for the sake of the thing, and Tira Siaz and Sachie Hanagawa are hard to place due to my general ignorance of sportscars.

Still, even without any particular interest or expectation of driving one, there's something pleasing in even knowing of a well-made machine, and it's certainly pretty, so, good choice, Jen! ^_^

Ja, -n

This sort of thing aside, it's probably just as well that our characters can't have their cars in-game. I mean, Captain Photon is a good case in point. You'd think he'd have some kind of super-sleek crimemobile like this:

But the truth of the matter is that he doesn't get paid a whole lot, and most of his money goes into building his crimefighting gadgets, so he probably just has the same car he had when he moved to Paragon City. :)

The more I look at that car, the more I can't help but think of those Lucha movies. The heroes always drive flashy cars like that, even when their acting so wooden, you could build a deck with them alone.

I blame my copy of Lucha Libre HERO.

I suspect that in the world of City of Heroes, that's the 2004-or-so model of the long-running Ford Nucleon.

The problem with that is you cannot, then, throw yourself off a roof in the time-honored Luchador tradition.
