"A Less Minor Reorg"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-14 AT 10:44 AM (EDT)

Oh hey, DCF doesn't do relative links, who knew.

So. As you can see from the What's New page, there have been some further changes.

Symphony No. 5 has now become The Order of the Rose: A Duelist Opera. The change in musical terminology signals a different approach to the tone of the piece, which is admittedly retroactive, but still valid, I think. It's more of a recognition of the fact that OOTR is different than an active effort to make it so.

In addition, what was S5's Dìqiú Suite has been broken out into a separate entity unto itself. Suite for Avatar and Trinity (The Dìqiú Suite) is a crossover between The Legacy of Korra and The Order of the Rose. Really, it always has been, but this gives it official recognition.

As noted on WN, the Dìqiú Suite will conclude with its planned Fifth Movement, Taken by Storm - after which the main OOTR storyline picks up again, moving (with a few side stories and catch-up pieces showing you what everyone else has been up to while the Trinity were in Dìqiú) toward its own climactic movement, which picks up what was the "overtitle" for all of S5: Fearful Symmetry, or The Order of the Black Rose.

Hopefully the transition will be pretty painless. I do have to adjust all the audio files for S5/OOTR and the Suite, which will take me a little while, so until that's done the audio links on the two new index pages will be dead. It should only take a few days to rectify that.

Special thanks to Matt "Terminus Est" Logan, who provided the great pic of the Heart of the Rose that adorns the lefthand side of the OOTR/DS title graphics (with which, I have to say, I am particularly pleased if I do say so myself).

That's a really good solution, nice one! Very much looking forward to catching up with the Black Rose folks, in particular.

Edit: Actually, one thing I'd suggest - and feel free to tell me to fuck myself - would be to remove the original versions of the Diqiu Suite's third movement and added extras if you're happy with the Director's Cut version. It could be confusing for new readers. Don't know if that's a thing you've replicated elsewhere with the other changes, but if you're going for a clean shift, that seems less jarring than leaving both versions there.

Language, Mr. Ferret! Just because I go into sailor mode when something makes me angry doesn't mean you should try and get out ahead of me. :)

Besides, this was a pretty good idea, apart from my having wanted to keep the old versions around for archival purposes.

Hmm, that's true, although I did kind of want to keep them available, just in case. Here, I know. How about this?

When I get to re-packing the audio, I'll have to remember to include the old version and Storytime / Fire Hazards standalones in a subdirectory, in case someone just wants to listen to one or the other without having to paw through all n hours of the whole 400K story to find them.

That looks really good, the footnote thing works well. It's amazing how the change makes the whole movement feel more comfortable now, as well.

Speaking of which, though it's probably not hard to work out, the weapons forming the border of the OOTR title graphic are, clockwise from the left side:

- The Heart of the Rose, Utena's heartsword.
- Stick, Corwin's Draconic warstaff.
- Kotetsu no Sasayaki, Kaitlyn's zatōichi.
- Rosenjäger, Anthy's Draconic warstaff.

The Dìqiú Suite version replaces Kotetsu no Sasayaki with Space Sword, the meteor-steel jian Korra inherited from Gran-Uncle Sokka, as seen in Familiar Spirits.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned yet, but that first link there has a stray slash at the start, so that the url comes out as "http:///www.eyrie-productions.com/new.html"; when you click on it.

Beyond that, very attractive packaging. I juat have to figure out how to reorder what I'm reading to Peggy to fit.

Well, the only actual change to the order (apart from the Goodbye and Hello Director's Cut repack, and the alterations to the Overture and those two bits of Symphony No. 4, which would've happened anyway) is that I moved Le Droit du Dragon to before Try, Try Again, and that mainly because I thought the slight air of mystery about Izumi (what is a Kyoshi Warrior doing there? That won't be explained until the next story) would make for a nice tradeoff for not interrupting the flow from Try Again to Honeymoon for new readers.

OK. Most of the audio has been adjusted and re-uploaded; the speaker icons should work on the OOTR and DS indexes now. You'll note, however, that Clarion Call is missing. The rec levels on the original were woefully low and I couldn't fix them, while recording in new title sequences, without completely blowing out the sound quality, so I'll have to re-record it.

Also, I'm not going to do an audiobook version of Top Gear: "Road Film (With Fighting)", for obvious reasons. DSM Panic! Volume One, maybe, but that's a long ol' beast; take me a while, particularly as I'm trying to keep other things on the active list.

Speaking of long ol' beasts, the Director's Cut of Goodbye and Hello, As Always, once fully comped together from the original version, Avatar Storytime, Fire Hazards, and "Someone to Talk To", is nearly eight and a quarter hours long. So, you know. Pack a lunch if you decide to tackle that one.

While I was in there, I finally finished re-curating the S1 and existing S2/S4 audio, so the links on the index pages will work again, as I should've done ages ago. Sorry about that.

Also, you may notice some pretty uneven sound where I've done the edits to the OOTR/DS files, particularly the "director's cut" assembly of Goodbye & Hello. Sort of inevitable when recording in an uncontrolled environment like this; the acoustics of my living room-slash-office change with the weather and whatnot, and most of those files were recorded before I got the pop filter and boom arm for my mic. That's why I'm re-recording Clarion Call, because I couldn't make the differences even approach being acceptable - the master rec level on the original files was way too low.

That already feels much better and makes so much more sense! We're not meandering ever further away from the point of Symphony 5, we're having a crossover between The Order Of The Rose and The Legacy Of (The) Korra. A crossover is naturally going to spend more time on introducing people and concepts and supernatural entities and places from one side to another, and less on advancing the respective main plots of each.

   That was completely sincere.

(wait, crap. same problem.)

And so is this.

(damnit. still doesn't help.)

Okay, how about this: in your experience, am I more often bitingly sarcastic or geniunely excited and babbling at length about relatively minor details?

Wow, Mr Gryphon's been a busy fellow...

Actually reading it all will be the proof of the pudding, as the saying goes, but as others have noted just seeing the reorganization laid out makes me feel better about it all, it just makes so much sense!

Interesting how The Diqiu Suite is part of both The Legacy of Korra and The Order of the Rose (bye, S5!). You have links to Diqiu from both LoK and OotR, could we have links on the Diqiu homepage back to LoK and OotR? I don't see any - am I overlooking them somewhere?

Other than the bits moved from Prelude to that S4 story, and the renaming of what's left of Prelude to Overture in A Minor, and the consolidation of several previously named stories into the Director's Cut, are the changes to the rest of what was formerly S5 pretty much title changes only? (other than that, how was the play Mrs Lincoln?)

Bordering on amusing/funny is the title of the "next story" after Diqiu Suite in the OotR line: "Technical Difficulties"

Hmm.

So I forgot about that, and when you pointed it out I went and looked at the page to see if I could work a couple of discreet links into it without making too much of a mess. I wasn't really happy with any of my options there...

... so, at long last, I finally went and learned how to use the <map> tag. (This has been the month of new tools for me so far. It's a bit weird.) Just click on the titles of the things that are crossed over in the Dìqiú Suite logo and you'll be whisked off to the appropriate base page.

As far as I can recall, yes. I'll be making a few small fixes to the earlier bits of OOTR as I record the audio, because I always run across some minor errors I missed before when I do that, but there have been no scene edits or other significant content changes.

Heh, that's actually a complete coincidence. That's what that story's been called since it was originally going to be a Mini. (It's the "B'Elanna Joins the CorpsKlingon Navy" side story.)

Hooboy, now that's going to be a real fasten-your-seatbelts wild ride. So many good stories have come out in the last little while I'd forgotten all about where B'Elanna went. Although... isn't there a brief scene somewhere of her talking to Utena about wanting to be involved in the Tau Ceti excitement?

Thinking back to her last bit of dialogue with Zargh, I hope she doesn't have to perform too much percussive maintenance on the crew...

Correction: While recording the audio for Ash Knight, I decided to tack the Mini-Story Matalde the Red (written four years after the fact, but set immediately afterward and pertaining to one of its key events) onto the movement as a post-credits sequence. Neither the movement nor the Mini have been significantly edited, I just spliced them together, and both text and audio now reflect this.

There's a code error in Ash Knight. I think it's at the splice point where the mini went in - a "<" sign is missing I think. Here's the code around that point to help you search it:

<p>After a moment, Shuten straightened and took his hand away from his side, and his eyes burned with an inner fire all their own.</p>

<p>div class="timestamp"><p>Friday, February 19, 2410<br>
Asgard</p>

<p>Corwin and Anne were eating breakfast and trying to figure out which of Asgard's sights to hit that day when there came a knock at the door.</p>

That's nowhere near the splice, but it was broken. I guess I'm like Microsoft now and beta-test things by shipping them. Thanks.

Altered Appleseed isn't in the new chronology list. Removed in error or sent to the dust bin?

Just once, why can't somebody not notice something like that?

Can I notice long enough to applaud the removal? The script format grates on me in general, but it really bugs me here, because I'm used to finding the stories in third-person, or the occasional first-person. I like the intent of Altered Appleseed, but the presentation was unappealing.

Also, I imagine you could write the story again, hit the most important plot points, and make it much better if you really needed to.

I wouldn't mind seeing an episode of Lensman: The Brave and the Bold produced in script format.

There's actually a trick to writing in script if you're not actually writing a script. Once you realize that, you can get a lot done with it; as a format, it is best deployed if you're writing something that's heavily dialogue-dependent with a lot of meta-humor in it, in which traditional prose transitions would actually get in your way and hinder the story.

I'd never try it for a serious piece, tho.

That was actually the script written by a film student in Olympus before the Olympus Fall/Earth Alliance Restructuring before the War of Corporate Occupation. Inexplicably, it got made into a made-for-TV movie, hence the major historical inaccuracies. It sometimes turns up on the late-late-late-late-night movie channel in various broadcast zones.

You know, I think it was a year ago that I suggested that S5 should be re-organized on the grounds that it had wandered off-spec.

I... didn't see something like this ever happening, tho.

I applaud the curation! Curation is important; a lot of people don't bother and their stuff becomes a mess.
