"SotS 3"

Once again, Y'all have timed your release to improve a bad day on my part.[1]

Random comments:

It seems even divine intervention cannot (or will not) save Corwin from Utena.

Corwin giving Utena The Great Book of Amber:
1) Once again my MP3 player displayed its sentience by playing the artifact fanfare from Valkyrie Profile[2].

2) Wow, I seem to have had an exceedingly minor impact on an Eyrie story. I feel like I've had the chance to be a Stormtrooper in a Star Wars movie. "See that? That's me getting shot by Harrison Ford!"

Are we ever going to get an explanation of how the Dyson sphere was built in under a century? Beyond "Authorial Fiat", that is?

Monument to a Usenet group? Which one? Alt.flame (It's a torch after all)? RAA[S|C]? alt.tech-support.recovery? ABPE.spam?

Polychrome

[1] I would like to state for the record that Jurassic Park 3 sucks, and not just 'cause it's a bad movie.

[2] A game I highly recommend. Easily better than anything Square has done since at least FF Tactics.

Heh. Though one would think that would have been more appropriate for the Thorn of the Rose.

That would explain why it didn't save him.

Perhaps, although: 1) the fanfare is only ten seconds long which is a bit short for that whole scene, and 2) most of the artifacts in Valkyrie Profile aren't weapons or armor, and thus their utility is not always obvious.

I suppose a system-wide temporal compression field would simplify timely contstruction, but with that kind of tech, why bother?

I dunno, but, were I directing it, there would be at least one shot that would look something like this:

Of course, getting it into place is a question, too. My feeling was that some poor alien race is now suffering from racial insanity, after having received the Pac-Man TV Show on their TV-equivalents, then seeing a Stellar-class Pac-Man moving through, mouth opening to consume a star like a single dot...

Bot wanting to start Yet Another Thread about Sots, I figured I'd append a few thought-snippets that occurred to me while re-reading (I didn't think much when I read it the first time...it was 2 am :)

1) 10th world? 10th world? who grafted what onto Yggdrasil??

2) commuter flight to the koi pond? how often do those leave, and how expensive are seats?

3) oh look, it's the pickle dream...no zoner, you're actually NOT the only person to have that dream...I've read many a story with a main character borrowing that quote...

4) compilation of amber books? <searches frantically to find something like that in THIS world>

yet another good story...keep up the good work guys :)

What'd be nifty is if it had the 5 short storys Zelazny wrote about Corwin and Luke's doings after Prince of Chaos. Can you say Rocking Horse S***?

drakensisthered

So I simply said one of the great trite truths: "There is generally more than one side to a story." - Corwin, Roger Zelazny's 'Courts of Chaos'

Sporadically, but they're cheap; all you have to do is get the current holder of the Power of Dios all worked up, then inadvertently quote somebody she really, really hates.

I might have you beat: my MP3 player started up "O Fortuna" about two lines before the actual music cue. Scared the hell out of me.

There's something that's been bugging me for a while: How does the WDF get all of its money? In the second SotS Corwin said that a freight consortium went bankrupt trying to build _one_ fold-capable ship. The WDF has oodles of them. Is this just another thing that will be explained when Lord F's Great Evil finally shows up?

Brain droppings on SotS 3:

(Eris on Cephiro):
They'll probably end up sticking some poor jerk with going there and finding out as a Trial of Ascension.
(Corwin on being a god):
... in another year or so, I'm not sure exactly when, I'll be called upon to face my Trial.
(My reaction):
Uh-oh.

I love Tiny Robo. "Grrr!"

Why do I not like the fact that one of Corwin's schoolmates is named Fuu?

-Nightmare Butterfly
Actually, I always though Giant Robo sounded like "Dooom!"

<Yogurt voice> Moichendaising! We got the WDF Transforming Valkyrie, the entire line of WDF Dolls - no, we don't have the anatomically correct Kei and Yuri, what kind of pervert are you anyway? - including the new GENOM Executive line, the toy weapons, the movies, the TV series, the animated TV series, the animated movies, the toy tie-in to the movies, TV series, animated TV series, and animated movies, and most importantly we gots the clones of Kei and Yuri that we genetically engineered to have no brains in the WDF Bunraku House!</Yogurt Voice>

Sorry, just re-read Sim Hell, which is where the last one came from. (Bunraku is Japanese for 'puppet', and is in many forms of cyberpunk fiction the term used for a prostitute who has the ware in the head to 'shut off' her normal personality and fulfill the fantasies of the client....)

My ex and I always referred to it as the 'Robo Grunt'. Or occationally 'Meditation through Destruction', as sometimes it sounds like a deep, deep voice going "om!" in a drawn-out manner.

Maybe, or it might not be explained at all. It's not particularly important, story-wise. If it ever becomes so, I'll bother explaining it.

As long as she doesn't have a brother/sister/cousin/best friend/etc named 'Bar' <or anything that is phonetically equivalent>. I've seen way too many 'foo' 'bar' pairs lately.

Nope. She does have an elder sister, but her name is Kuu.

Yup. It's as close to a standard as computing has.

No, but she sure has (or will have) a redhead friend named Hikaru, and a blue haired friend named Umi.

I dunno, but you just made me snarf myself... You see, they wind up in the wilds of Cephiro, and Fuu goes missing. Just as they all start to panic she rides up on a rather imense Ursunine, FORCING someone to exclaim "Where did you find that bar, Fuu???" :p

Somebody with the shelf space for fifteen tiny vehicles?

(Although, you know, a miniature set of Getter craft would be kind of cool. "CHANGE! MINI-GETTER... ONE!")

I didn't enjoy Disc 1 of Shin Getter Robo all that much - very confusing, and what I could make out of the story wasn't all that appealing - but the robot itself is the coolest Getter yet. I'll have to put it on the List of Giant Robots Which Ought to Appear Someplace.

Utena poked around Corwin's workshop a bit, peering at various things, while he worked on his most recent creation, this one at her request. She stopped in front of a case. It was clear-fronted with thick, almost starship-grade transparisteel, and within paced what appeared to be another toy robot, on scale with Tiny Robo and Lesser Mazinga.
The robot itself, however, was much different. Where the other two robots looked like, well, robots, this one was slender, with long arms and hands. The shoulders were topped with a tall pair of pauldrons that were taller than the head. The head itself seemed to have a muzzle with a horn atop it, and the entire machine was encased in purple armor with green highlights. It was moving, almost prowling around the cage. It stopped suddenly, and turned to look at Utena.
She stepped back at the sheer sense of anger that seemed to come from the robot, which then LEAPT at her, slamming into the klaster. With a squeak of sudden fear, she took two more steps back, and then fell over a chair. As soon as she was out of direct sight, she heard the slight scratching noises stop.
Footsteps came over to her, and she looked up into the towering inverted face of Corwin. "What happened?" he said, concern written on his face.
"Something... in there... what the HELL was that?"
Corwin peered at the case, and sighed. "Minigelion Zero One. One of my first robots. Something went kinda wrong with the AI and... bruised the hell out of Dad's leg before we got it shut down. I still feel weird about the idea of taking it apart - sometimes it acts almost like it has a soul, an angry soul, but still a soul. And, well, it's FINE around Kate. Almost like it senses the weirdness around Dad and Kei and Mom and the rest of the people, but the kids don't set it off. Yet."
"Except me."
"Well, you do keep making people show up. Aunt Eiko's going to be happy at all the people we bring to Christmas Eve dinner if you stay around long enough."

....oh, come on. To a mini-EVA unit, most of the WDF probably pings as 'Angel' or at least 'weird-ass'.

which brings up two things-

first, because such a horrible miscalculation in scale could result by them being eaten by a small canine-family mammal, and Nall will NOT play dog for that purpose.

secondly-

uni(meta).. hmmm..

"so, corwin, what university do you plan on studying at?"

"Meta U"
