"The Forum and Cookies"

Exactly _how_ does the forum track what threads I've read
and haven't read? I'm curious, due to the fact that I
run "Windows Washer" once a week. Last time I ran it
(just a few hours ago), I noticed upon my return to the
forum that all of my "read" threads had become "unread".

Anyone know the answer to that? I'd like to know so I can
instruct Washer to ignore or save whatever settings are
resident on my own machine.

FWIU: It uses a timestamp either per conference or
for the entire forum, (depending on your settings), if a
thread has posts after the timestamp it is flagged as
unread.

Okay, after doing a lot of digging, and installing a
forensic cookie tool, I've found that the Forum does
put a cookie on my machine, and that it contains
several data fields.

Among these are "TimeStampCookie", "LastVisitCookie",
and a session ID.

As a result, I've set all my privacy programs to pass
that cookie, and my drive & file washer programs to
ignore it.

I set pretty high privacy standards, as I am the target
of the occasional attack from skript-kiddie wanna-be's,
and I guess the EPU forum settings were caught in the
crossfire, so to speak.

AFAIK, if you log in, your read/unread (per conference) is stored server-side.
If, however, you read as an anonymous user (but then you wouldn't be able to post!) I have no idea how the read/unred info is stored. I have, on occasion, found my cookies deleted, and needed to log back in. Once I did that, however, the forums remembered what I had read.
