"Teaser 5: OOTR13 (5M) Taken by Storm"

This is the last long-form teaser for Taken by Storm.

"Awright!" Korra declared, bounding down the stairs. In keeping with festival tradition, she had on her best anorak over her formal, high-collared tunic, and fur-caped trousers that looked practically new. "Are you guys ready to have some fun?"

Everyone turned and just looked at her for a moment, prompting her to inquire, "... What?"

"Is this the Nanisivik equivalent of The Hat?" Utena wondered, flipping a hand through her own loose, feathery hair.

Korra, for the first time Utena had yet seen, didn't have most of her hair up in her customary high ponytail or the formal white-cloth-cap-covered bun she'd sported at Utena and Corwin's wedding; her sidelocks were tied as usual, but the rest of her thick brown hair was down, falling about her shoulders and down into the laid-back hood of her anorak. It gave her a surprisingly different look, and one, Utena realized, not too unlike her own. Korra's hair wasn't feathery like hers, but had a tendency instead to fall in waves, a little like Kate's; but the unstudied, casual ease of the look was the same.

"Oh, heh, nah," said Korra, grinning. "I just felt like changing up my game a little for the day. Nothin' wrong with a little variation." She nudged Corwin with an elbow. "Eh, Corwin?"

"We're all going to die," said Nyima with heavy mock fatalism.

"Beg pardon, Master Nyima?" Korra inquired, pretending to have missed the remark.

"Nothing," Nyima replied with a little smile.

"All right, then!" said Korra with a fierce grin as she opened the front door. "Let's do this thing."

Oh good. The sooner the better.

Caped trousers are one of the oddest looking things I've seen in a long time. It's always seemed that it would be easy to make one yourself - make the split seam in your skirt higher, rotate it to the front, and wear trousers underneath. The advantage is that you don't have to worry about an embarassing "wardrobe malfunction" while getting in or out of a car.

Then again, just leave the split seam in the back. Does Korra have any hip capes in her closet?

Heh, I had a City of Heroes character who had a costume like that, but that was because of a bug that made the side slit in her miniskirt render in front instead of on her hip. I decided she'd just roll with it and wear tight cargo pants underneath. :)

As for Korra's, the cape part and the pants part are actually two separate garments, and I've never been really clear on what the function of the cape actually is. When I first saw an illustration of her in her original costume, I took the fur-edged bit hanging down around her waist for a jacket or the top half of a jumpsuit, tied on with the sleeves, as certain rakish jumpsuit-wearers in history have been known to do (Chell in the promo art for Portal 2, for instance). There's at least one episode where she takes it off, though, revealing that she is, in fact, just wearing a weirdly-shaped fur blanket around her waist for no readily evident reason, other than it looks kind of cool.

(Then again, all of Korra's clothes are a bit like that. In the second season when she goes to the literal-not-just-political South Pole, she wears an anorak, but it only has three-quarter sleeves and she doesn't wear gloves or a hat. I can only assume that she doesn't freeze to death because Southern Water gals are just that badass. :)

And don't forget that the COH implementation of trench coats was commonly called the "butt cape" because it was essentially a skin-tight jacket from the waist up, and a re-use of the cape code from the waist down.
