Heh. I had considered "if you don't, then I can't help you," but.

Have you noticed that Rain Mikamura from Mobile Fighter G-Gundam looks a lot like Vision? I mean, not to the extent that the MegaTokyo 2040 version of Sylia looks a lot like Ifurita, but they could be sisters or something.

Odd, really. Vision had quite an impact for a character who appeared in one (well, OK, two, kind of) episodes of an aborted OVA series that probably wouldn't have become famous if it hadn't happened to coincide almost exactly with the first faltering attempts at bringing Japanese animation to the American mainstream. I guess that's just a testament to the soundness of her character design.

(There wasn't a 2040 version of her, was there? I have the discount-DVD-box-set thinger for that, but I haven't watched all of it.)

Also, for the record - and here we have the main reason I moved this to "source material" - I rather like some of the 2040 character designs, for all that that might make old-school BGC fans grab at their heads and go "oh nooooooes!" I wouldn't be too shocked to see one or more of them turn up in UF at some point. (Well, apart from the one that already has, but Ifurita doesn't really count. To be honest I've never minded that kind of thing much; it kind of amuses me, really, gives me the mental image that the character designs are working actors. Like when Captain Gloval from Macross turned up as Captain Nemo in Nadia, or when Asuka got that job as the girl with the tank in Those Who Hunt Elves. :)

As far as I can tell from several sorces (one being the actually Japanese and English vocal casts for BGC Tokyo 2040) Vision is OVA only. Eh your thoughts on BGC2040 I can agree with, just what they did to Mackie in that version got me going.

The differences in the characters between the OVA and 2040 is unusual. Most shows that have both OVA and TV series runs use the same character designs. But because of those legal hashes, they had to redesign the characters for 2040.

So, not only do the 2040 Sabers look different (Nene as a blonde DOES not cut it in my book....) but in personality. OVA's Sylia may have a few screws loose, but 2040's Sylia screws are beyond loose -- they're scattered in her wake....Maybe she is an escapee from El Hazard....

I did enjoy Pearson Mui's Anime Detective (http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ETC/AD/) series entry, "The Case of the Valentine Visitation." (http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ETC/AD/advisit.txt) I thought it hit them right on the head

Aw, I like blonde Nene. I won't say I prefer her, but I wouldn't kick her off /dev/console. She's sassy! :)

Ain't she? Actually, every time people start complaining about how whacko the 2040 versions were, I start having images of Blonde!Nene sitting at a computer blushing with a seven-years-older version of Redhead!Nene leaning over her with an expression, like, 'Bus-ted!'

Now that I think about it, except for the Prisses - who are too alike in all the wrong ways - and Lap'Lamiz!Sylia and Ifurita!Sylia - because the latter is genuinely broken in the head - I can see all of the characters becoming friends with their counterparts.

And maybe that's the key to it - they aren't the same people, despite their names and roles, and it's unfair to both sides to try and treat them that way.

Ja,

Yeah I can see where most people are comming from on that series, I just liked how it handled a series with a paper thin plot (you have to admit the ova's plot was pretty thin), just the only thing I didn't like was Mackie I mean the made him a feaking Boomer prototype that Sylia's father bulit. I prefere the OVA version that liked to peep on the Knight Sabers including his own sister.

Well, for this old school fan, it wasn't the new designs as much as the names attached to the designs. Quite a few of the old school crowd wouldn't have had as much of a problem with 2040 if the characters had different names, or had been introduced as a "next generation". Also, as you may or may not remember, at the time AIC was feeding info to afbgc, and what we got wasn't what they said they were doing (the design end product differences were discussed by TurboTurtle upthread). Ah well, lots of water and time under that bridge. I guess you had to have been there...

You may be up to at least two, by my count. I'm of the opinion that EH's Nanami and 2040's Linna also share character design (also EH Mokoto and 2040 Mackie). Of course, if Ifurita doesn't count, neither do they...

You're right, it *is* kind of fun to spot the clones sometimes - Akane from "the show that shall not be named here", Kyoko from Maison Ikkoku, and Sister Angela from One Pound Gospel (all Takahashi designs) are one of my favorites. Another is what I call the "AIC Triplets", BGClassic's Priss, Gal Force's Rabby, and Genesis Surviver Gaiarth's Sahari, who can be seen on-screen next to each other in the intro of "Scramble Wars" (if you're lucky enough to have a copy of this parody)

Wow, I though I was the only one here who had seen Genesis Surviver Gaiarth. I just wish there was more to it, although with the steady decline in production value over the 3 OVAs #4 might look liek South Park...
