"Ask G anything, the topic that never ends... just jump"
|
Roit, given the last one was almost 60 posts, it seemed time... So, I sat down and re-read corespondence and a couple of questions that may or may not need the Jr. Vorlon scout treatment jumped out at me: 1) The big battle with the Cylons to end their pursuit of the Ragtag Fleet. Is there more to this one than meets the eye? or is it just till the muse comes to splain it to you (and then by extension, us) its a case of Galactica and the few functional ships of the WDF at the time went out and Kicked BOT!!!!!! 2) I dont recall if it was brought up at the time, but it feels like there needs to be more about the tale of just how Talia'Zorah, Corwin, and Utena helped save the Rayya's crew from the fever. And/or Vedik's death defending the ship, which sounds like it was his actions that bought enough time for G and Co to ride to the rescue. Do you have the broad strokes and are waiting for the muse to come help you fill it in, or are you waiting for her to explain it to you still? Of COURSE you wernt expecting it! No One expects the FANNISH INQUISITION! RCW# 86 |

>1) The big battle with the Cylons to end their pursuit of the Ragtag >Fleet. Is there more to this one than meets the eye?Not really. You got pretty much all that was important about this incident in Correspondence. For all that it was a First Contact (arguably two) and the "new" WDF's first major engagement, there wasn't anything outstandingly special about it. >2) I dont recall if it was brought up at the time, but it feels like >there needs to be more about the tale of just how Talia'Zorah, Corwin, >and Utena helped save the Rayya's crew from the fever. Probably. >And/or Vedik's >death defending the ship, which sounds like it was his actions that >bought enough time for G and Co to ride to the rescue. Maybe, maybe not. Again, this one was pretty straightforward. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Are there any source materials (anime, tv show, movie, etc.) in UF >that in retrospect you wish you hadn't included? Oh yes. Although, to be fair, they aren't always things I included. (Simple courtesy forbids examining that notion more closely.) What, for example, was I thinking with the Animaniacs references in the early '90s? Sometimes the things that give me trouble are my own inventions, though. The Zeta Cygni Dyson sphere, for instance, is cool and distinctive, and (though it's a standard sci-fi trope) not directly referential to anything, but as a practical proposition it's given me a lot of headaches over the years, and I'd probably have been better off if I hadn't done it. If I were doing Crossroads now (which gods forbid, but), New Avalon would probably be on a Halo, or possibly inside a Rama-like construct in its own orbit of Zeta Cygni. Or just on Zeta Cygni II. It's not like there's a shortage of real estate there. >Are there any source materials you'd like to include but have trouble >finding the right way to work them in? Sure. I'm not going to list them, because people would want to be helpful and start suggesting ways, and I've already got too much to do, but absolutely, there are things that I've either not found a good way to include, or (rare in the UF settings) things that I've concluded there just isn't a good way to include, usually because they're so closely identified with their original setting and/or era that sliding them into a space-opera future, even one as malleable as UF's, never rings true. That kind of thing doesn't happen that often, though, simply because part of the fun of working in UF is trying to find new ways of fitting things together, and seeing how far you can pull something without breaking it. Rally Vincent from Gunsmith Cats, for instance, would be hilarious as a 25th-century, UF-universe, Star Wars-style "bounty hunter" instead of a private eye chasing bail jumpers in 20th-century Chicago; I've just never found the time to make it happen. --G. LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-11 AT 02:06 PM (EDT) >Sometimes the things that give me trouble are my own inventions, >though. I would think with almost all the surface area of a Dyson Sphere available to collect solar energy that Zeta Cygni would be able to make a metric petabuttload of antimatter by some esoteric sci-fi process (conversion, massive particle colliders, or whatever else). That would make the capture of Zeta C by the Federation during the civil war vitally important to make sure they have a steady supply of fuel for warp capable ships while denying it to opposing forces. And while Samuel J. Guthrie may be the dilithium baron, he is a piker compared to Gryph, Zoner, and Lord F. the antimatter kings. Would explain why some people really hate the "immortal frauds". ...or am I just way off? Michael C. Fortner "Rule 37: There is no such thing as "overkill". Hmm. I always thought the Zentradi stole the Dyson sphere. Knowing how to use one isn't the same as knowing how it works. I just assumed this was a case where Lord F heard there was a civilization that had one, and spent the 80+ years trying to acquire it. And that since then the end of the war of corporate occupation (because it was like a military base and therefore you don't let in scientists from all over the fed to stare at it), physicists have flocked to the sphere trying to understand how it works...and like most scientists, having most of their hypothesis disposed of. It's only been there for 20 years for civilian exploration; I bet they've barely cracked it's secrets. t. find sometimes that simplest explanation is "we don't know" or "we don't understand" and yet non-scientists hate those explanations... >That's not -entirely- true though; recall that the AT&T blew a full on >-hole- in the Sphere, and slapped one of the emerging ships way out >towards the other side of it.Given the surface area of a two-AU sphere, there's a... mathematically significant... difference between the firepower required to poke a hole in it and the firepower required to destroy it. Since I've been Marathoning the Stargate TV series (Yet another I have never seen before) and with us seeing both the stargate and Samantha Carter, I was wondering if there was a UF equivalent of the SGC with the IPO. Also are any of the other major characters around? Just on a side note does anyone else see the replicators with the same annoyance as me? I mean they've managed to knock the Daleks down to my number 3 spot on my most-annoying-sci-fi-munchkin-baddies-in-the universe. They only things that beat them out for me are the flood and thats only because they're a pain in the rear on halo. ------------ ~If you want my input the red explosions are really pretty and if you did enough you might live for a few more excrutiating seconds My not so humble contribution to cyberspace http://cgwolfgang.deviantart.com/ |

In UF we know where the gates go, and none of the alien races evident in Stargate are known, so our need for such an organization is... limited. >Also are any of the other major characters around? Probably, though not doing exactly that job. Redneck did a BPGD file for Jack O'Neill at one point, I forget what he had him doing. Kawalsky and Feretti are working for GENOM as R-Type's principal Red Cohort bodyguards. They probably weren't in the TV series, though. >Just on a side note does anyone else see the replicators with the same >annoyance as me? Lost me there, I'm afraid. I've never actually watched any of the Stargate TV shows, only seen some photos and heard about them from people I know who have. I put Sam Carter in Battery Park mainly for the continuation of the Carter joke. (In the UF universe, everyone of any cosmic significance named Carter is related, and they all ultimately can trace their line back to John Carter of Virginia or one of his brothers.) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >On the gripping hand, however, I notice a lot of interesting new (at >least to me) artwork on the UF subpage of your site. I assume at >least some of these are related to future works that are still in the >pipe? A lot of what appears on my EPU subsection of my website are things that I've worked on that can be considered "Concept Development" when working on other writings (in a way, the pictures of the Sterling Sisters were similar) that are meant to eventually officially get posted, but 1) the stories they would prominently feature in haven't been written, 2) I have no access to the EPU server where they would eventually get officially stored, and 3) It takes me a while to move them from temporary to permanent storage on my own site and I don't want to post things that will eventually have broken links. My normal inclination is to keep them hidden entirely until the actual related stories get fully written (since just posting them out of the blue without explination would cause way too much anticipation/expectation/pressure to get it done for me to handle), but given some of these things end up taking YEARS to manifest, I just said to hell with it, and put them up there to be found as a bonus. Someday, they'll be relevant; just not today. --- Philip

Cause sometimes answers raise more questions: Was UF-Sabretooth BORN to the title of Baronet of Creedmoor, or did he earn his title through services rendered to the Crown, so to speak? We've also now heard the name Thomas in reference to the UF-"Wolverine" several times... would it be fair to assume that means (in the UF dimension, at least) he was born Thomas Logan? Jubilee's reaction to the Baronet also so plays up the difference between the UF and X men versions, but is the encounter in Weapon of Choice their first, or is it just Jubes has such a cognitive dissonance between the brutality of the X Men version vs the Urbane Civility of the UF that she never quite gets used to him? (Please do note that these are only the good ones that came to mind on Tuesday whist doing some digging. I'm not including the puns and some other goofy thoughts) Of COURSE you wernt expecting it! No One expects the FANNISH INQUISITION! RCW# 86 |

>Was UF-Sabretooth BORN to the title of Baronet of Creedmoor, or did he >earn his title through services rendered to the Crown, so to speak? The latter, though the Creed family has been reasonably prominent on New Snowdonia since the Settlement - the places there that are named for them (such as the actual Creedmoor moor, see below) were established before he came along. Also, I should clarify: the name of his territory, as it were (what would be formally called his demesne if he were a peer), is Creedmanse. Creedmoor is his country house (and the name of the fenland area in which it stands). >We've also now heard the name Thomas in reference to the >UF-"Wolverine" several times... would it be fair to assume that means >(in the UF dimension, at least) he was born Thomas Logan? No data on whether it was his birth name, but it was the name under which the "native" version was known to those who knew him. >Jubilee's reaction to the Baronet also so plays up the difference >between the UF and X men versions, but is the encounter in Weapon of >Choice their first, or is it just Jubes has such a cognitive >dissonance between the brutality of the X Men version vs the Urbane >Civility of the UF that she never quite gets used to him? She's probably met him before - she isn't surprised by his appearance here - but, as you say, she's never really gotten used to him. He's just too... weird. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Creedmoor is his country estate, where he spends most of his time. Less chance of trouble with the neighbors, particularly when the ninja attacks start happening. :) I planned to be clearer about that in Weapon of Choice, but it came across as really clunky exposition, so I ended up leaving it out. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >With regards to 4, I meant in terms of fictional atmospheric fighters >used by alien races. There's bound to be some, after all... Ah, I see. I didn't realize you were speaking from the UF universe when you said "this universe".
In that case, it stands to reason that there probably are, but since the whole matter is kind of weirdly double-meta - first I'd have to make up pre-spaceflight alien jet fighters, then characters who look like them, and, well, I mean what? - it's unlikely to come up. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Some quarian pilgrims bring back trinkets and gadgetry stolen from the various races. Um, it's actually pretty easy. 1) Grab all of the stories liked under the UF section of the site. 2) Grab everything in the Mini-Stories forum, understanding that several of them are part of the omnibus collections you already grabbed. 3) Assemble them in whatever order you like, understanding that some are plain text and some are HTML, and they aren't just going to concatenate with each other cleanly. Really - it's pretty easy to find all the stories on the forum, since the actual stories are all in the Mini-Stories forum, one per thread, and other than the Featured Documents thread everything else in the UF forum is plain discussions anyway... I really don't see why this is so hard... Offsides [...] in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles. -- David Ben Gurion EPU RCW #π #include <stdsig.h> |

She's based on Reika "Vision" Chang, from the seventh episode ("Double Vision") of the original 1980s Bubblegum Crisis OVA series. In-story, the Vision machine intelligence who appears in the Future Imperfect era of UF is a visual duplicate of a human being (the BGC character) who lived during the Exile era. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Ed and Ein have wandered in and out in their own way several times, >but have we ever seen any of the other Cowboy Bebop characters show >up, even in a quick background cameo? Also, do you think we'll ever >see some of the things Ed and Ein have been up to off screen or is >that something that works better if left as a mystery? No characters as such that I can think of, though the Swordfish II and the Space Shuttle Columbia have appeared, and Chad Collier and Riddick's ship the Gravy Train is the same class of vessel as the Bebop. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
