"In Which I Distance Myself From TV Tropes..."

Well, people here that frequent Bob's discussion forum (The Drunkard's Walk Forums) would know why for already.

Bob Schroek, upset by the turn of events at TV Tropes, left the site quietly and attempted to take all his stuff with him. The TV Tropes people reacted badly as they reversed as much of Bob's edits as they could find.

What appalled me the most was the tone of voice they took. Bob is not unknown at TV Tropes - he's made some pretty significant contributions to the site. The mods and admins tone was snide, as though dealing with some uppity newbie or a random troll instead of a long-standing member of the community.

On top of all this is the Stalinisation that has been going on over there. At any time that Fast Eddie or any of his followers are questioned about whether or not what they are doing is the right thing, they are immediately banned from the site and the offending post expunged.

Furthermore, the witty and conversational tones that made the place so much fun is now being relabeled as 'natter' as Fast Eddie attempts to remake the site into a true and unbiased wiki... which is not what TV Tropes was supposed to be in the first place. Informative? Yes. Wikipedia? No.

So, from this point forward as the Unofficial Source Material Ferret, I will attempt to use TV Tropes for research as little as humanly possible. In any case I do have to use the site, I will cite the source material itself and not TV Tropes.

Clearly, we need to replace TV Tropes with another site, that does what TV Tropes used to do.

Sure thing, Prince Charon Here, I whipped up a site for you at allthetropes.orain.org. Sorry it took so long, I had some technical problems along the way in getting all ~200,000 pages translated and imported.

Oh, and tell your friends.

Well, I just wasted my work day. I kept bouncing between ridiculous giggling and enthralled reading.

The Mythbusters page is shear comedy gold:

Bookmarked. Thank you very much, seems interesting.

Looking at the UF entry: Long lists are looooonng.

This is almost as bad as that time someone was writing fanfics that I didn't like, and so I wrote my own fanfic all about how their fanfics were bad, and then they kept on writing their fanfics as if nothing had happened!

I...can't help but wonder if that's snidely directed at our hosts.

Speaking of Internet drama, which left field did THAT come from?

Check Meagen's post count, if you will. I rather doubt that someone with 485 posts is here simply to dump on the creative staff... :)

I dunno, how many posts did Laudre have?

Sorry if I overreacted, I was having a crap day, and Meagen just happened to hit the "Release Overpressure Valve" button (being passive aggressive, and mysterious about it)

Anyway...

>I dunno, how many posts did Laudre have?

I was mildly disappointed to discover that the old post count is long gone. (It only dates me back to 2006, for that matter.)

I racked up that astronomical (for the time, at least) post count because I was a huge fan of Gryph et al. when I signed up. I continued to be a huge fan until a few pieces that really didn't work for me, and I kept posting about that for longer than I likely should have.

FWIW, I still read much of the output, especially stuff that doesn't involve the things that soured me. I've rather liked some of it, been of mixed mind for some others (i.e., Gryph's prose is fun to read, but sometimes the plot and/or character developments ... not so much). I just haven't much reason to post here about it, although I do look at the forums from time to time (... case in point).

Your original account was probably reaped for idleness at some point before that, and '06 was when you signed back up. It's happened to a number of users (including, to much facepalming around the studio the first couple of times it happened, Zoner). I seem to recall there was also at least one DCF update way back when which did a similar sort of thing automatically in the process of importing the user files.

(I stopped running the idle-account reaper a few years ago on account of it really wasn't necessary, and anyway, if I did it now it would probably be depressing. I can find enough depressing in the world today without going out and creating more.)

No, it's snidely directed at people who write the fanfics about how our hosts' fanfics are bad. It was how I found this site in the first place.

Bottom of this page right here. Some of the jokes are funny, some of them amount to "this is a bad fanfic and I don't like it".

I'mma follow the FiMFiction.net rule and suggest that an MST doesn't really count as a fanfic, more like (in these cases) if your English dissertation was being marked by a frat boy with a nasty concussion.

God, somebody sig that thing quick! I'd do it myself, but despite how much it makes me laugh it's not quite my style.
