"Desolation Angel compilation coming soon"

Hey, so, no teaser because there's basically nothing in it I could pull out that wouldn't give something away, so instead I'll just tell you: I just finished the full-length draft of the Desolation Angel finale segment, tentatively titled Royal Progress.

Barring unforeseen circs, my hope is to have it polished up and the full compilation assembled sometime tomorrow - er, this - er, Saturday evening. Along with the full cycle of the Desolation Angel stories:

  1. Blue Harvest
  2. Laura Kinney and the Maiden in the Ice
  3. Power Politics
  4. Put On Your War Paint
  5. Agreement in Principle (revision B)
  6. Nothing That Is In Between
  7. Tyrants If They Could
  8. Armistice Day
  9. Royal Progress

the compiled edition will also include the Mojave Hitchhiker's Guide entry, the bonus scene set during the Mojave Interlude, and the BPGD files on the Phoenix Queen and That Gun.

I have to crash early Saturday because, as is his wont, my father intends to pick me up at oh-christ-hundred Sunday for the Mother's Day run to my grandparents' place up in Chapman. Depending on how final revision and assembly go, there's the chance it'll have to wait until I get back, but my tentative hope right now is to have the comp out before I leave.

LAST EDITED ON May-10-14 AT 10:57 PM (EDT)

One unforeseen issue we ran into at the last minute when prepping Desolation Angel for release was where to file it, since the stories in it are all part of a theme, but technically span all three of UF's main eras, with significant centers of gravity in two of them. Ultimately, because I'm a little pressed for time tonight, we decided to put it under the Exile because of the narrative importance of Laura Kinney and the Maiden in the Ice. This may get readdressed later as other Dìqiú-related matters develop, but for now, that's as good a place for it as any. One thing I may do later on, when I've got some spare time, is list its individual parts (or at least the key ones) separately in the Chronological Listing. For now it's filed under 2336 for the same reason specified above.

That said, enjoy - wherever it's filed, it's out, and numerically speaking, there's - gosh - about a quarter of it you haven't seen yet. :)

There's a lot about this Royal Progress I really love, but the bit that cracks me up every time is your description of Azula and Ty Lee's reactions to the train derailing. 'they were more or less always prepared for such things to happen by this point in their lives.' Freaking professionals.

Heh, yeah, I enjoyed that when it came along, as well. It was about there that I decided they've been around so long now, and had so many unscheduled crazy adventures (jointly and separately), that their standard reaction to many situations that would send normal people into a mild-to-moderate panic is to think, "Oh, not again." :)

It's good to have everything in one easily found place, and the new story is great, but... who's Ty Lee again? I've lost track of whether she's rightfully in Asgard as a member of a previous "team Avatar", or "just visiting" as one of the Phoenix Queen's crew, or maybe something else.

I'd never watched any of the source anime or manga, but I've really enjoyed the Azula and Korra stories. This means I lose track of who's who fairly often and a bunch of the new characters are just names to me. I think I need a scorecard...

Ty Lee was one of the close circle of friends (for a 'close circle' of two people) of Azula and Zuko from the very early days of their upbringing in the Royal Palace of the Fire Nation. She was one of multiple siblings (so sought to be her own person), and in her early teens 'ran away' from home to join the circus, until Azula drafted her and used her as one of her two henchmen during the pursuit of Aang and the Gaang. She and Mai finally got fed up with Azula after Zuko had fully joined "Team Avatar", and stayed out of the way for the rest of the war. Afterwards, she joined the Kyoshi Warriors (finding that -being- a Kyoshi Warrior was more fun than pretending to be one), and helped serve in a bodyguard capacity for Zuko once he became Fire Lord.

Ty Lee lived out a long and fulfilling life in Diqiu for her natural lifespan, and ended up in Valhalla after all was said and done.

>Ty Lee was one of the close circle of friends (for a 'close circle' of

>upbringing in the Royal Palace of the Fire Nation.

In fact, she had the unique distinction of being the only actually nice person who liked Azula (which confused the living crap out of Aang and his crew when they first encountered her, and is why Azula wryly accuses her of being a poor judge of character in Royal Progress).

>She and Mai finally got fed up with Azula after Zuko had
>fully joined "Team Avatar", and stayed out of the way for the rest of
>the war.

Indeed, like anyone with any sense (and a few without - looking at you, Zuko), she abandoned the Fire Nation's cause by the end of the series, on account of she wasn't actually evil and had presumably ended up on that side due to a clerical error when the teams were selected. This... didn't go over well with Azula at the time; hence her apology for the way she'd treated Ty Lee, and Mai, in Tyrants If They Could.

>Afterwards, she joined the Kyoshi Warriors (finding that
>-being- a Kyoshi Warrior was more fun than pretending to be one), and
>helped serve in a bodyguard capacity for Zuko once he became Fire
>Lord.

This neatly illustrates how screwed Zuko was at the end of the war: he was safer hiring foreign mercenaries from a country his father had attempted to kill everybody in, than using guards from his own goddam army. :)

Like many Einherjar, she earned the right to return to mortal life through her service in the Ragnarök.

Not going to mention the fact that Zuko himself tried to burn their village down the first time he was there?

Short answer: One of Azula's friends/minions from the bad old days, who stepped over to the side of the angels, earning a measure of redemption.

Long answer: http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Ty_Lee

EDIT: Hit Return too soon....

Anyway, I was re-reading Laura Kinney and the Maiden in the Ice, and noticed a small continuity issue. In Chapter V, Laura identifies Azula's language as archaic Mandarin. In Chapte VI, Azula is described as raving in her fever dream in Japanese. Thought you'd like to know.

That's not a typo, it's a reado. :) You missed the paragraph in between in which it's mentioned that Azula is (at that point in her life) bilingual.

"Part of that was because, though she turned out to speak two languages, neither was one Rhian understood. The other, Laura reported when it appeared in fevered ravings on Thursday night, was Japanese, of an archaic quality similar to her Mandarin."

When she first regains consciousness, she's speaking to Laura in Earth Kingdom Tongyu, the common language of all educated people in Dìqiú, but when delirious with fever, she reverts to her first language, Fire Nation Kokugo.

Something I just noticed in reading through the full DA grouping, and having recently gone back over pockets of the Featured Documents section as well: Powell, Coalhill Crown Colony, is Rose Tyler's UF birthplace. She was, according to her FD entry, about a year and a half old.

Dunno if there's anything particularly special about that connection, but I found it intriguing, at least.

Not directly, but well spotted. I suspect one of Rose's early adventures with the Doctor involved a visit to war-torn Powell, and possibly bearing witness to part of Colonel Lewis-Porter's defense.

Of course, later in life, Professor Tyler will be much more familiar with the 25th-century work of Brigadier Lewis-Porter, but that's all far in both of their futures at that point, and isn't directly linked to Azula having participated in the relief of the 3CDF's forces in 2388.

So, having had the time to sit down and read all of the stories, as opposed to just Royal Progress (Because that's new and shiny), one thing I really have to compliment you on is Azula's character growth. Sure, there's over sixty years between Maiden in the Ice and Royal Progress, but I was still able to feel like I was following her development from her state at the end of last Airbender, to the loving Aunt/Imaginary Friend and honest to god hero when she goes after Katara.

As a world-building note, I do like the part where Azula notices there's non-humans around, and the reason it took her so long to notice. It's the sort of thing that helps to remind the reader that it's the Future, without beating it over our head on a regular basis.

   Just finished and THANK YOU!!!
You took one of my favorite A:TLA characters (especially due to the voice actress)
and completely redeemed her!

It was very nice series of stories.

I missed it software, but what is the Phoenix Module? From the context I get kinda what it does, but don't know where it came from (UF or Source or Unique to these stores).

Thank you again!

Off to the SOS5M4

   >I missed it software,

I'm not sure why, but I just enjoy this Freudian slip a lot.

>but what is the Phoenix Module?

The PHOENIX module (also known as a Monocyte Breeder) is a cybernetic implant from Fallout: New Vegas. Its in-game effect is to cause the player character to slowly but relentlessly regain hit points - too slowly to be tactically useful, but fast enough that you'll be at full health again after any activity that takes an in-game hour or two (using the "fast travel" function usually does it).

In the UF universe it's a piece of 21st-century black-ops technology, mostly forgotten in the wider galaxy; Azula acquired hers while she was stranded on Mojave in the early 2380s.
