"MRSA, gout, AND a sprained ankle"

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-12 AT 12:26 PM (EST)

This just has not been my week. Right ankle is sprained, while the left... hooo boy. I have several small ulcers, the largest one of which at the least has tested positive for MRSA. I'm on antibiotics and hopefully got it before it got into my blood, so there's that much off my back at least.

Except now I have gout in the left ankle as well, and don't know if the two interact at all (what with gout playing holy hell with the soft tissues in the area and all).

In closing: AAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

PS: *whimper*

Edit to add: What really sucks in all of this is that there is very little useful information out there. They say to change bandages 'often' but not HOW often. Also apparently I'm supposed to be using a DRY bandage, but the nurse who originally dressed the wound said to use neosporin? Am I supposed to sanitize the bathtub after using it, to prevent spreading, or will the antibacterial body soap do that job for me? Will Lysol work for that, or do I need to use something bleach based? And for the love of God, I'm tired of seeing site after site saying 'You're basically screwed for life, shun all human contact and treat this like an STD.'

So, the kind of day where you start reviewing the records of past lives to figure out exactly when you kicked the Prophet's puppy. Yeah, I've had that day.

Good luck, get better.

At this point, I strongly suspect there was more than one puppy involved. My ankle's the size of a smallish cantaloupe right now.

As someone who blew through at least several years' worth of positive karma over the past few days, all I can say is good luck, and I hope you heal quickly.

The gout at least seems to be receding, and the sprain has faded to a faint twinge when I walk. The infection is still worrisome, because the gauze pads still have yellow-green stains when I change them. I've never dealt with anything like this before, so I haven't a clue whether this is normal, a good sign, or a harbinger of my untimely demise.

Not a doctor. and I don't give financial advice but...
dude, get thee to a minute clinic or something. At least call the folks who treated it. I'm surprised they didn't give you the 10 warning signs of doom sheet that seems standard these days. Could be normal. Could be more infection. Not worth waiting to find out which.

good luck,

This. This thing looks, at least to a casual internet observer, fucking nasty. Given the potential consequences of not, you shouldn't be concerned at all about ringing them whenever you have a question.

In the spirit of What Hasn't Killed Me Yet, etc, I gave it one more day.

I probably shouldn't have, but when I changed the bandages this morning there was no drainage at all on the infected ulcer, or at least none I could see. I've got my fingers crossed that this means things are Going As Planned, since I still have four days left on antibiotics (and fear not, I intend to ride out the full course).

One thing I had been doing wrong which may have contributed to the worrying signs is this: I was following the nurse's advice and slathering the bandages with Neosporin. I've read numerous things over the past day that say this was definitely the Wrong Thing to Do, and looking at the papers they handed me confirms - with MRSA, you DO NOT use Neosporin or triple antibiotic cream. I'm about a week late in finding this out, but better late than an amputation.

To tell the truth, I couldn't exactly call anywhere over the weekend, because everything around here rolls up its sidewalk over Saturday and Sunday. I'll try the clinic (or the hospital, failing that) today, but they may not even talk to me since I have a $650 bill with them that I have no way of paying.
