I got intrigued enough to buy one of the low-end "founder packs" for this game, because a) I'm the kind of sucker they saw coming b) it has a PvE mode and c) modern tanks. So we'll see how that goes. It's a 2015 computer game, so that means it'll be downloading for most of the month. Should be finished just about the time the early access test ends. :) As a semi-related aside, one of my favorite games in the byegone age when 256 was an amazing number of colors was the original MicroProse M1 Tank Platoon, so - much as a good many World of Tanks players are specifically there to drive the Tiger - you can kind of guess which tank in Armored Warfare I most want to play, assuming I can be arsed to grind my way to wherever in the tech tree it is. --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-15 AT 05:32 PM (EDT) >The ride? A Leopard 1 variant. Cool. I rode on an elephant once. ... Not an Elefant tank destroyer, an actual elephant. What? Don't judge me, it was 30 years ago. It wasn't considered morally indefensible back then. Besides, he didn't seem to mind. I remember getting a ride on an armored vehicle at a state fair once, but I was a very small child at the time and don't remember what it was. WWII-vintage American, I'm pretty sure, but I don't think it was an actual tank; I vaguely recall it didn't have a turret. Maybe a self-propelled gun - M7 Priest or the like. There used to be a junkyard in a town not far from here (I may have mentioned this before) that was full of WWII tanks, trucks, halftracks, and so forth. The proprietor had used the wide range of parts available to keep a few examples running, and would bring them out for the Memorial Day and Independence Day parades in neighboring towns. So I've seen a Sherman tank and an M18 Hellcat tank TD on the move, but never got a ride on either one of those. I'd quite like to have a Sherman. Just park it outside and maybe run it to the store once in a while. Possibly get a dozer blade for it and use it to plow the driveway in the winter. It would make a nice conversation piece. Knowing this town, the code enforcement office would get after me for untidy yard infractions. --G. -><- Benjamin D. It wasn't considered >morally indefensible back then. Besides, he didn't seem to mind. Why would I judge? I'm not suffering the modern PC affliction. Considering that the eledphant is still used as a working animal in the East, today, and considering the size and strength of an elephant, I sincerely doubt that he was in any way strained, or minded even the slightest. >I remember getting a ride on an armored vehicle at a state fair once, >but I was a very small child at the time and don't remember what it >was. There aren't all that many US-origin vehicles of that sort, old OR modern. There are a bunch of others, Brit Centurions and Soviet/Russian BMPs among others, but no US ones. Though, there IS a Futurliner! Number 8, to be exact. I've seen it, though it isn't by far fully restored. ...! Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers! |

Look, game, I don't mind that my teammate ran into me as we moved out from the spawn. We're all low-tier, it's a tight space, these things happen. It was 5 points of damage, it was an obvious accident, I'm not bothered. But would you mind not showing me the hectoring "Don't damage your teammates!" screen? All I did was get run into. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Had a nice little moment the other day playing the Armored Warfare early access. I was playing a co-op battle in my M113, the Tier I vehicle from the more NATO-oriented German arms dealer (as opposed to the more Eastern Bloc-oriented Russian one, though there are exceptions in both cases), which is the US aluminum APC fitted with an autocannon-equipped turret to make it into kind of a half-assed light tank/CFV. (I'm not sure if this is a variant of the M113 that actually exists. There are a million-zillion variants of the M113, so it's entirely possible.) Anyway, the M113 isn't a terribly good APC in real life, so you can imagine what kind of improvised light tank it makes in a video game, and I'm a bit of a scrub. Still, I survived longer than I generally do driving Tier I light tanks in World of Tanks, and did actually accomplish a thing or two before I managed to get lost (hey, what do you want, I'd never seen the seaport map before), flanked, and blown up. At which point I had the following stereotype-defying exchange in team chat: zgryphon Oops. Well, that's what I get for bringing an APC to a tank fight... (notice that there's another M113 driver on the team list who's doing a damn sight better than I am) zgryphon ... and for not being as good at driving it as Morguebat. Morguebat <3 There I was expecting to get slagged off for my noobitude, because that's what you do in this kind of game, and the guy(?) went and hearted at me. :) Then there were congratulations all around as the surviving team members capped and won the game. That kind of community vibe probably won't survive the game going into open beta, let alone release, but it's nice while it lasts. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >This is a good game. I wish I were in a position to agree - I certainly enjoyed the Early Access gameplay I had - but thanks to the unique way in which client updates are implemented, I started downloading the beta client four days ago and won't be finished with it until well after the founder head start has ended. And so much for that. (Judging by the traffic on the AW forums, this is happening to a lot more people than just me, before anyone goes pointing at my DSL.) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Looks like now that AW is in open beta, more of the morons we know and love from World of Tanks are piling on. <random_jagoff> no cap <random_jagoff> kill all <zgryphon> there is no "all", it's PVE. the bots keep spawning until we cap or they kill us <random_jagoff> stfu noob <random_jagoff> try to cap and ill tk u <zgryphon> great, have fun never winning <zgryphon> (logs off) I should stress that this was so far an isolated incident, and in my experience the AW community remains, so far, one of the better ones I've run into in such-like games to date. That's just so very, very World of Tanks, though. --G. -><- Benjamin D. *sigh* This is the sort of thing you should have taken a picture, or even better a video, of and sent to Jingles so jagoff would get world-wide ridicule. ...! Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers! |

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-16 AT 08:39 AM (EDT) Due to Jingles making a video about the latest patch, and what appeared in it, I re-installed and played a bit, from scratch no less. And I have to say I'm happy-pleased with what's in the game. There's a new 'base' system which I don't seem to remember, with various buildings giving you varying bonuses to the game, Baracks improving your crew, Command Post improving your vehicle commander, and so on, all of which having varying levels of upgrading. There's a third dealer giving you access to a(so far limited, but...) Chinese vehicle tree. There's, of course, more vehicles, with more upgrade options. There's difficulty levels for your PvE battles, with a cost above 'easy', but with increased rep and credit payout. There's 'loot crates' of varying levels, giving you money or upgrades or things like boosts and insignias. There's boosts and insignias. :P These are improvements that will give you, in the case of insignias, a 'next battle' increase in things like Commander or Crew XP, or your payout. Boosts, on the other hand, lasts over the course of X hours, and will give you a boost to, for instance, rep and credits. These aren't all new things with the latest patch, but since I haven't played for I'd say at least 6 months...well, happy is me. Oh, and it seems, so far, that "random_jagoff" got tired of not winning due to the shit he has instead of brains, and so he went elsewhere. I've played for 6-8 hours over the week-end, due to crap weather and so on, and haven't had any problems so far.
Well, that's not strictly true. There was ONE game where two idiots decided to play silly-ass instead of actually completing the mission, to the point that the single one left at the end had less than 50 health left when he decided to roll into the circle. The mission ended with a win, but that was more due to pure luck. When you're an incompetent gunner to say the least, don't go taunting the bots, it won't end well. But apart from that, which as noted ended with a victory, albeit more due to luck, nothing. And even those morons didn't threaten tk no cap kill all. Just that they wanted, I presume, the largest amount of kills, and they weren't really up to it. ...! Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers! |
