"In Through the Side Door"
|
So the other day I was rambling around the Internet, as you do, and in the course of pursuing something else entirely, I ran across a piece of what I guessed was fan art for something I wasn't familiar with. In the setting where I initially ran across it, it was entirely devoid of context, so it took a bit of pawing around to figure out what the deal was, but ultimately I was able to track the image to what appears to be its original source. Information acquired there led to a positive identification, and the bemusing discovery that the show it's fan art for has a completely different art style. I have known that to happen before, of course, but I'm not sure I've ever encountered the widely-diverging fan style first before. I suspect the sensation may be the art equivalent of meeting the characters from Magic Knight Rayearth first by reading Symphony of the Sword No. 2. From there, well... man. If you start where I started from and keep exploring, things get weird in a hurry, that's all I'm saying. For a kids' show with a deliberately primitive art style, Adventure Time has what I can only describe as an arrestingly Rule 34-ready fan base. I'm not gettin' all Sam the Eagle on that, it's fine (in some cases better than fine!); it was a bit startling to find myself in that territory so soon, is all. There are normally more signposts. :) Still, I dig casually attired rock 'n roll vampires. In the end, maybe that's all that really matters. --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-13 AT 04:45 PM (EDT) >Adventure Time! is a lot of fun, but I get the impression that it >wasn't meant to be exclusively a kids' show; there's a lot of parental >bonus stuck in there, if you care to look. That happens a lot in children's programming nowadays, but I can never really tell whether it's part of the process or a directed day-one goal. Although, having said that, I did just check, and it's not tagged "Kids" on my TiVo, only "Action Adventure" and "Animated". Still, my point stands. That was a very short Rule 34 on-ramp. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. I've not gotten around to checking it out myself, but I've long been under the impression that Adventure Time has a rather substantial adult fanbase, and may, in fact, be its dominant viewership (though not with the same sort of dynamic as My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic). It's hardly a -new- thing, per se; recall that the old Looney Tunes had a lot of parental bonus built into it as well--as do the Pixar flicks these days. I have some third-hand information--I know a guy wot knows a guy wot works at the network--suggesting that it was purposeful, though. These days, the rule 34 onramp is going to be short regardless of the specific topic, simply because of the nature of the internets; there are plenty of folks out there who like rule-34ing things and they have plenty of soapbox to display their works on. I do get your point though; one doesn't necessarily suspect sexified tributes to be one's first exposure, even today. In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea |

I mean, entirely apart from the R34 angle, some of these cartoons are really sad. I mean, actually, properly sad. --G. -><- Benjamin D. This is one of those rare moments when Eyrie leads me to something that I didn't find awesome. That thing being Rule 34. Not that I am adverse to things like Rule-34 but it is a special level of WTF-ery that the first thing Rule-34 brought up for me was pokemon Rule-34... yeah... ------------ ~If you want my input the red explosions are really pretty and if you did enough you might live for a few more excrutiating seconds My not so humble contribution to cyberspace http://cgwolfgang.deviantart.com/ |

I didn't mean to imply that you did Gryph :). But as it stands half the anime I've seen as well as Red vs blue, VG cats, and more I learned about because I had to look it up after reading about the characters here. That's something you can take credit for. ------------ ~If you want my input the red explosions are really pretty and if you did enough you might live for a few more excrutiating seconds My not so humble contribution to cyberspace http://cgwolfgang.deviantart.com/ |
