"Duellists of the Rose"

I've just finished reading it for the first time, and if I'm going to discuss details I'm going to have to go over it once or twice more.

Juri's duel: YES! YES! YES! Juri is tremendously cool. Though I will note that this scene was the first time I actually felt like I was missing something by not having seen most - heck, 36 episodes - of Utena. I presume the part where she disarms Eliza is a reference to one of her duels in the series?

Mia's parentage: Oh my. Who's the mother? I presume the full story will be told at some point? It had better be, otherwise you're liable to be running for your life from a group of crazed otaku.

Psi Corps: Wow. The Symphony got... I want to say global, but this is a bit beyond that. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Nothing further for now. Great work, as always. (And I really enjoyed the cue for "Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku." It wouldn't be a Rose Duel without it.)

Yes. It's how her first duel with Utena ended - with the Sword of Dios, having been flung into the sky by a violent disarm maneuver, plummeting down and neatly nicking the rose off Juri's chest while she was busy telling (a clearly defeated but not yet roseless) Utena what a lousy swordfighter she was. Remember Utena musing that she'd never really beaten Juri, and that her first win was just plain dumb luck? Well, there you go.

Crazed otaku don't bother me much anymore. Neon Exodus Evangelion cured me of that.

As for Mia's background, I don't know about the full story - when do we ever get the full story on anything? - but there is more information that will be coming along as she gets to know the others better.

>Nothing further for now. Great work, as always. (And I really enjoyed

That cue's kind of tongue-in-cheek as it appears there - the concrete steps down the bank from the main campus to the football field at WPI ain't exactly the Forest of Secrets - but I'm glad I thought of putting it there, anyway.

I submit that it's not really a Rose Duel without a Rose Bride, either, but hey. :)

Hm, that was rather dumb of her. Seems like she ought to know: she who gloats before the battle's over invariably loses. Oh well, thanks for clearing that up.

>Crazed otaku don't bother me much anymore. Neon Exodus

^_^ Yes, I rather imagine it would have. Still, I do hope we get more information on Mia. I always did mean to start watching B5. Problem is, it's usually not on at a convenient time for me, and if it is it's invariably sometime in the middle of the series and I have no idea what the hell's going on anyway. I'm sure it would be a good series if I could figure out the slightest bit of the plot. -_^

Despite the fact that the scene's quite good as it is, I keep mentally substituting Louisiana State University's Greek theatre for the football field when I read this. I just realized, it'd be a great place for a duel.

Neat. If there's one disadvantage WPI has as a setting for this kind of story, it's the fact that it lacks anyplace really dramatic for such a thing to take place. Alden Hall is nice, but smallish (like a good-size church), and you can't see into it from outside. Harrington Auditorium (which, despite its name, is a gym, not an auditorium) is, well, a gym. Ditto Alumni Gym. And there are no good rooftops or high places.

I may set a Rose Duel on the little paved area in front of Bancroft Tower (the same spot my Street Fighter: Warrior's Legacy self uses as his "home stage") sometime, though, just for the ambiance, and because I'm very fond of Bancroft Tower.

I've always thought that the shiny glass front of Higgins Lab would be a pretty good setting for something public and triumphant; during mid-afternoon, especially during the lovely dim winters, you can see into the second-floor (large) stairwell landing from outside, so it's elevated and behind glass.. Just kinda a nifty place.

Well, keep one thing in mind. The Worcester Preparatory Institute campus is a rebuilt replica of WPI as it was in 1991. Many of the features of the current WPI campus were never built in the UF universe, because the school was vaporized first.

The renovations to Higgins Labs were never completed. There is no student center. The Fountain of Useless Knowledge doesn't exist, because West Street was never closed. The Wedge Booths were never taken out, and the lower wedge isn't handicapped-accessible. And (as evidenced by the Liza/Amanda/Azalynn scene) there's still a pathway to Olin between Alumni Gym and Higgins Labs. Etc, etc.

Well, is it just me or is this story coming out faster with every part? Great work Gryph, you've written something far better then many of the normal novels they sell these days.

The duelling club was well done, with the defeat of Broadbitch making it even better. She's become the perfect spoiled little rich girl, thinking that she's better then anyone else. She's really got her work cut out for her now, with all of the duelling club working together against her. The beating she got this time was good, although I can't help but feel she deserves worse, thanks to what she did to everyone. More proof you've written well, when I start to think of all the characters as real people.

It's nice to see Dorothy actually out and about, although her treatment at the hands of Broadbitch and Harris a sad example of racism. They don't even consider her to be alive. And people wonder why she doesn't seem to care much about herself at times.

The telepath debate seems to be getting worse, with so many students leaving WPI. I'm kind of curious about how that will be dealt with in the end. Heh, more reason to keep reading!

Well, give it time. The school year's not over yet. Liza's got a whole term and a half left to find somebody else it'd be unwise to piss off, then piss them off. :)

Nope, they don't. In Liza's case, that's a socioeconomic thing; her family is prominent in the society of a megacorporation that makes industrial and domestic robots, among many other things. In Harris's, it's religious - I'll get into that more in the next movement.

Them's good eatin'.

Why do I have this strange image of Liza annoying someone like Marty, only to suddenly find herself much lower on the social chain? His 'business voice' would probably trash her if he was serious about it.

Ah, religion, one of the greatest forms of racism on the planet today. Seems that still hasn't changed. Still, it should be interesting to see.

Well, it's "Harrison Greene" in Doc Sidhe by Aaron Allston, but he's pretty keen. I highly recommend.

I'm not an Utena fan. Never seen an episode of the series. (A friend of mine has many dojinshi of Utena, which, in general, scare me.)

I went and tracked down that song (like so many others in Eyrie fic, oh I mourn the loss of my 'Undocumented Features' tape...).

Then I hit animelyrics.com and snagged the lyrics. This is not your average fight song. This may very well have, had I heard it before, the music for the duel at the end of the last Chessmen episode, instead of the one I wrote it to. (It's a piece from Rurouni Kenshin, for the curious - you hear it in, I think, episode 6. It sounds almost jazzy, with a saxophone lead on it, not quite what you'd think of as fight music, but...)

Mokushi Kushimo / Shimoku Kumoshi / Moshiku Shikumo

It's in The Nomad right now. Wooba.

>I'm not an Utena fan. Never seen an episode of the series.

In that case, a bit of background info: "Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku" isn't actually used as fight music in the original show. It appears in the same place in every episode that contains a duel: it plays as Utena is ascending to the platform above the clouds to fight, and ends when she arrives. There are three different versions of it on the show - like the Pentium theme, it keeps getting more elaborately orchestrated while remaining essentially the same. The version in Duelists of the Rose is the first one.

More data than you probably wanted, but what the hell.

>(A friend
>of mine has many dojinshi of Utena, which, in general, scare me.)

Unsurprising... the show is so rich in odd imagery and curious psychosexual background noise that its fandom contains a higher-than-usual percentage of total warpos. :)

>Then I hit animelyrics.com and snagged the lyrics. This is not your

Heh. All of Seazer's choral arrangements (there's one in the background of almost every duel, in addition to 'Zettai' playing before each one) are like that - they have lyrics which are evocative on a kind of visceral level, but don't make any actual sense. :)

"Conic Absolute Egg Algebra"
"Earth as a Character Gallery"
"Astrolagous Earth Backgammon"
"Magic Lantern Butterfly Moth 16th Century"
"I Am a Yellow Pen"

One of these isn't the title of a Utena duel chorus. I dare the non-fan to tell me which.

I'm tempted to go with 'I Am a Yellow Pen' but somehow I can see that being one... try 'Earth as a Character Gallery'? <I have never seen an Utena, and I picked that because it actually makes some sort of sense, where as the rest seem like MUCH nonsense and mindbending. You are indeed. (I'm quite fond of "Earth as a Character Gallery". All the dueling choruses sound much the same, especially if you don't understand the lyrics anyway, but nevertheless, that's one of the better ones. "Internal Clock, Municipal Orrery" is nice too.)

Actually, it does help. It makes the location of it in the story make MORE sense. It's the music for Utena coming to a duel. whether flying up to the clouds or walking through a crowd, it's still Entrance Music.

....Damn you to Hell, Benjamin Donald Hutchins!! Now you're making me want to go into Manhattan on Saturday and get the entire series! And watch it in a sitting, like I did with Evangelion (minus the movies).

I've never heard of the guy before. I think I may want to pick up some more stuff he's composed, if I can find it. It's sufficiently off-beat in that PDQ Bach way.

I live Near To New York City.

There are many places I can get stuff in New York City.

(Hell, I got all of Rurouni Kenshin subtitled at one place over a four-month period... because even at 4 eps a tape, 96 episodes is a bit much.)

Note to self: check up on what game charas belong where before making comments.

I must have gotten Mia confused with Lemina from Lunar 2 for some reason. Must mean I need to go back and play the games again. :)

I've finished reading it finally, and I must say good work as always. And especially at the rate you seem to crank this series out. Did the muse hit you with a ten ton mallet lately?

I suppose, but he was introduced in the first game, so I tend to think of him as a Silver Star Story character. (Our version is much closer to the SSS version than Eternal Blue, anyway.)

Little Ms. Liza has no idea of just how lucky she's been so far. I don't think anyone's ever told her her pet target's dad and best friends are on a first name basis with Death. I loved the way Juri issued her challenge, but it does open up one plot hole... Why didn't little miss Rich witch just run straight to the dean and try and make trouble?

As to the duel, even though I too have never seen Utena, somehow I instantly figured out how Utena's first duel with Juri ended as soon as she made the comment about not falling for the same trick twice.

Durendal... Who's the sick puppy who would name an AI after a bomb? Especially an AI for one of the few places that still has a pocket research reactor? However, it seems to be crossing the line from artificial to real senience, ala certain computers in NXE's omake theaters. (the only part of nxe I've read)

Is it just me, or were there a lot more peopel using song zingers in this part?

We're definatly seeing the light of justice start to reveal traces of shadows, too... Why do I have a VERY bad feeling that this Psi Corps is not much better than its source material? Also makes one wonder just what Mac's secret is that the whoevers want to keep an eye on him. It may be my sensitivity to plot lines, but I have a feeling he may become a member of the Band Federation or Duelists club soon for much the same reason Truss' daughter did.

Last two thoughts... #1, I'm glad that you posted the Dorothy moves into her room sceen earlier. If you hadn't I would have snarfed my iced tea... and it was sitting on the desk at the time. #2 Apprentice godling my backside... Corwin seems to be well versed in the Miraculous works department. He hath crafted well indeed, and is even at this stage a credit to his parents.

Juri's not a student - Liza's never seen her before in her life. She was curious about that, and also possessed of a strange desire to take care of the situation herself, rather than dragging in the Forces of Authority. She's probably not certain why, herself; several things about the events of this episode have left Liza feeling a bit... conflicted.

>Durendal... Who's the sick puppy who would name an AI after a bomb?

He's not; he's named after the legendary sword, after which the bomb is also named.

What's this in response to, particularly? I'm curious, since there are a couple of things I could think of that might have called it to mind.

In either case, Corwin thanks you kindly. He does his best work when he's got proper motivation.

Most memorable one:
Utena:"How am I going to get through this?"
Zoner (Offscreen) "With a little help from your friends."

There were two or three more that I couldn't bring to mind without taking the time to re-read... Not that the story's NOT worth re-reading, just that I dont have time to do it while posting.

All three 'creations' that feature prominantly in this story.. Lesser Mazinger, Tiny Robo and the Thorne.

Oh, and one thing that escaped me on first posting... Juri's eyes landing on "So you've just arrived"... as soon as I read that, I let out an agreviated "ZONER!"

Ah. Durandal was the sword of Roland, one of Charlemagne's knights. I think the legends of Charlemagne's knights are in Bulfinch's Mythology, but I'm too lazy to check.

Oh, those. Actually Saionji said that (Zoner just said, "You might try letting your friends help you")... other than that, and Utena singing a piece of "You're So Vain" (which she's heard the Art of Noise cover), I can't think of any others. But then I probably do them unconsciously. :)

(Saionji seems to have several parallels to Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band going on - his theme song is "Getting Better"... :)

>All three 'creations' that feature prominantly in this story.. Lesser
>Mazinger, Tiny Robo and the Thorne.

Thanks. I'm very pleased with TR's performance in this one, myself. He makes kind of an odd teddy bear, but I like the image of that scene in my head; to borrow a Fred Gallagher-ism, it's "Sad Girl with Robot". :)

>Oh, and one thing that escaped me on first posting... Juri's eyes

Nah, not Zoner's fault. It's Utena's copy; Azalynn returned it (remember, she borrowed it in Azalynn's Winter Holiday), and rather than reshelving it properly, Utena just tossed it on her desk. She must have been in a hurry at the time. :)

Chart all the following as unofficial, except for bits about Harcourt "Mac" McKenzie's personality...

My guesses:

(1) Juri is not a student;

(2) Liza does not (at this time) want the attention of the cops; and

(3) Liza wants to humble this one personally.

>Durendal... Who's the sick puppy who would name an AI after a bomb?

Look up the Mac game "Marathon."

For historical reference, however, Durandal/Durendal/Durendalus etc. was the legendary enchanted sword of Prince Roland, son of Charlemagne. Pick up a copy of Bullfinch's Mythology for a starting point on the legends.

>We're definatly seeing the light of justice start to reveal traces of

Mu ha ha ha ha...

> Also makes one wonder
>just what Mac's secret is that the whoevers want to keep an eye on

His nationality might do it, except you've got the wrong Mac.

Harcourt McKenzie, aka Mac, is not -on- the list.

J. Maurice MacEchearn, aka Moose, is.

> It may be my sensitivity to plot lines, but I have a feeling he
>may become a member of the Band Federation or Duelists club soon for
>much the same reason Truss' daughter did.

I won't say that Mac will join either club or not, but we -will- see more of him than a foil for G'Kron's prattling.

(BTW, THANKS for noticing Mac. }:-{D )

>Apprentice
>godling my backside... Corwin seems to be well versed in the

I -really- need to write up 'Wedding from Niflheim' and show just how much trouble Corwin (and Leonard, Priss, Sylvie, Hiroshi, Achika, Tenchi, and Guy) can get -into- when they're a little younger...

How do you do it? You write story after story (and they are some of the best I've ever had the luck to get into my hands) while I barely manage to write TWO PAGES of 'Dragonchronicles'.
The only other fictional story that managed to move me as much as 'Symphony of the Sword' is Zen's 'Bitter End'. (I know, The Show That Should Not Be Mentioned Here and all that...)
You people got some real talent here. So, what ever you do DON'T STOP WRITING!!! ^_^;

(DAMN, I sound like some mindless fanboy!I should stop here.)

PS: I'm really looking forward to 'Hunted Rose'.
