"(S57) Interlude at Vortigern's Lake #2 (For Today)"

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-10 AT 02:01 PM (EDT)

89 +5 deflection bonus to Armor Class; may have other undocumented capabilities. Not the One Ring.

100 This is the far-future equivalent of Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, the essential reference work for not just mechanical but all engineers - lovingly referred to by those in the trade simply as "Marks", as in, "Hey, Stan, what's the melting point of iron?" "I don't know offhand, look in Marks."

116 He got Ace to pick it up at the Prydonia Chapter Academy bookstore, most likely.

224 There actually are cold days in Hell, so that old saw no longer really works for anybody really familiar with the Nine Worlds.

312 I'm hearing right and wrong so clearly
There must be more than this
It's only in uncertainty
That we're naked and alive

336 This bit of dialogue was written long before I had a context for it, or even knew what that context might be. For all I knew at the time, it might've been the preamble to their final parting.

423 Even when the universe tips on its axis, some things never change.

603 The same advice he quoted to Anthy in For Tomorrow.

671 Elim Garak comes through in the crunch once again.

680 And once more we're indebted to Anne for designing a character's outfit when I was at a complete loss.

I'm not sure if Utena realizes it, but with the jacket on, and viewed face-on, her outfit has the same effective lines as Kaitlyn's concert outfit from The Rose That Blooms In The City Of Light. PJM

719 If one wants to be pedantic about it, at this point, Corwin has known Utena for little over a third of his conscious life. PJM

776 So if I'm dreaming don't wake me tonight
If this is all wrong I don't want it right
'Cause you're the one sure thing when I get lost in the game once again
Hey, I'm a lucky guy without a reason and I don't understand

927 A track from Cowboy Bebop the Movie, last seen in UF as the background music for the Duelists' escape from Earth way back in Hunted Rose.

1019 We considered a lot of different places for the next scene, including the Monolith, Castle Eyrie, the World Wide Building, Corwin's place in Asgard, and even Bancroft Tower. In the end, the cabin on Vortigern's Lake won out, not only because it's private and already dear to them both, but also because of the dream sequence in Interlude at Vortigern's Lake No. 1. Much of what Utena has taken part of in the course of the Symphonies, especially first two, has been in refutation of some unpleasant thing or another that happened to her before, and the idea of balancing the distress both she and Corwin faced during the storm in that story with what follows in this one was very appealing.

1073 Who's going to bother digging the car out tomorrow, furball?

1092 An average speed of 167 miles per hour. Not too shabby!

1257 Zoner jotted this paragraph down long before we had any real reason to believe that things would work out so that we could use it.

1268 I don't usually leave the camera on quite this long, as it were, in a scene like this, and I wondered for a little while whether I ought to release it this way. In the end, though, I decided that it was too important a moment to look away from, and that I'd handled it discreetly enough - and besides, given the scene in the original Revolutionary Girl Utena that it balances against (see the annotations for Interlude at the Hotel Monolith), I really had no choice. The symmetry would have been lost if I'd cut it short - and here, more than anywhere else in the whole story, that symmetry is critical.

1279 Some readers have misinterpreted this paragraph (and parts of Anthy's speech early in the story) as a kind of... trivialization of what's been done here - as if I'd suddenly taken leave of my senses and decided that the characters rubbing the bits together was the most important thing in their story. It's not, of course, and the act in itself isn't what Utena's thinking about here. What she's thinking about is the fact that she and Corwin have abandoned the last distance between them and will henceforth impress no limitations on the bond between them. The physical consummation is an expression of that, but the truth and the power it represents goes much, much deeper. To me that was obvious as I worked and sweated over this piece. Apparently some readers' mileage varied. I can apologize for failing to convey it adequately, but I won't apologize for the phenomenon itself. Anthy was right all along: This was well past due.

1295 Yes, it's that cherry tree, the guardian spirit of the Shinguuji family.

1308 The cold bleakness of the surface in Svartalfheim is the main reason why the svartelves choose to live underground. Even from the surface, the Svartalven sun is very small, cold, and far away, as though Svartalfheim were on some far-flung outer planet. It can almost never be made out through the realm's ever-present icy mist and overcast anyway.

1332 Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
I'm coming alive

1491 This story was written before Raven: Blood Ties; had it come after, Gryphon's companions would probably have been Raven and Starfire.

1509 This is, indeed, the Master Chief in civvies. In the source game, they very coyly never show his face. The UF version looks like actor Daniel Craig (best known as the new James Bond in Casino Royale).

1517 Tramm is based on the real Chad Collier's long-time friend Tramm Wigzell, who has also had cameos in several Cartoon Network series (he works over there somewhere). In UF he's a Selkath (the fish-person species from Knights of the Old Republic) because one of those cameos was as "Tramm the Fish Boy" in the Aqualad episode of Teen Titans.

1556 Wakaba hasn't been called that in a long time; she stopped wearing her hair in the style that suggested her old nickname back in 2406.

1568 She did! Way back in A Question of Faith.

Yep! And the fact that Juri can admit it as well, hey, that says good things about the entire situation. PJM

1616 Once again that two-line ending tag gets used to end a scene, but in the most positive means possible. Helluva way to end a Symphony. PJM

1619 During the painful period when I had just come up with the ending for Knights of the Tenth World and believed that Corwin and Utena would never be together, this song tormented me mercilessly. I didn't even own a copy of it, and I kept running into it. On the overhead PA in the Star Market in Porter Square, Cambridge. On hold in phone mazes. On the radio in my car when I was switching tapes. It haunted me the way Go West's "The King of Wishful Thinking" used to haunt my friend Andrew Petrarca.

1708 This says "The Order of the Rose will return" as opposed to "The Symphony will return" because I didn't know, at the time, whether there would be a Fifth Symphony. There was the possibility that the next series to feature the Duelists would have a different over-title. In fact, that possibility remains, but that's a musing for another day.

Point of order. If this story is meant to be the end of S4, then it should have been called the coda, not an interlude. The latter word implies there is at least one more full story/movement to come.

Technically you're correct. However, all the other non-movement stories that had Corwin and Utena's relationship as their primary focus were called Interludes, so...
