"SoR 4"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-01 AT 00:47 AM (EDT)

Well.

I can see why the previous title for this (Roses In Springtime) was not used.

A lot of angst and struggle, but in the end they make their way through it. I just love stories like this!

Highlights

Durandal - Everyones favorite rouge AI taking a liking to our intrepid group? Is this good or bad? :)

Utena's duel with Liza - Very kick ass. The music cue with Bad Religion really struck a chord in me. (While listening to it and reading the story I suddenly had the urge to 'Air Guitar' along with it, so I did. It was very refreshing.)

Juri and Zoner - I hope they get to talk to each other again. ^_^

The Alley - Oh yes. Payback's a bitch ain't it? >:)

Ed's final words - My reaction: "Ohhhhhhhh shit."

Looking forward to Hunted Rose.

Zack Seaholm - Anime fan, weathernut, worshipper of the goddess Belldandy.
"You're so lovely, it's a shame your soul is empty."
-Azalynn dv'Ir Natashkan

Quick addendum:
Bah, the subject title was supposed to be SoS 4! *sigh* Oh well.

Duelists' Society: very cool idea. and a nice way to keep most of the folks who need to be armed and well practiced.

Durandal: this one came out of left field, but hindsight makes it rather obvious. I keep being surprised at how, well, I can actually BE surprised by EPU fanfics... most books and movies etc are just not able to pull that off very well. congrats.

Not to me. After a thread hits about 50 posts, it becomes difficult to read with the system I have in my bedroom, as the tables start taking a very long time to render.

>Duelists' Society: very cool idea. and a nice way to keep most of the

Thanks. (Partially inspired by the discussion in General on weapons carry laws. Thanks to the charter of the Institute and the laws of 25th-century Earth, Utena can now carry the Thorn of the Rose around openly wherever she damn well pleases - which she may well start doing, if she's in a puckish enough mood when she dresses in the morning. :)

Heh...

(he said, whistling innocently to keep from saying any more right now)

>G'Kron: a pacifist NARN!? <facefault>

Well, he's a pacifist in the same sort of way that Iris from Sakura Taisen and Prince Phil from Slayers are. G'Kron knows that there are people in this world who do not love their fellow man, and he hates people like that!!

... Or, to be more serious, he's perfectly willing to fight to protect himself or his loved ones, but he doesn't believe in attacking - except verbally. :)

Well, admittedly I am using an antique Power Mac as my bedside machine right now, and it does lack considerable wang. Still, 50 posts before it gets too boggy to bother with, forcing me to go get the Vaio, is pretty respectable for a seven-year-old Mac.

>"I like Slayers, but if ANY of the Saillune Royals show up, someone

... in which case that someone will probably be me, because I'm very fond of Princess Amelia, and she's on my short list of characters to make a place for if the opportunity ever presents itself.

While we're on the subject of Slayers, here's a random factoid: Leonard, Kaitlyn's middle brother, will look rather like a redheaded Gourry as an adult, except without the perpetual stupid expression. He's got that hairstyle and a similar build, a bit slimmer but not much.

This has been today's random character design note. :)

Early Amelia or Later Amelia? <a few years with Lina will blunt ANY idealist at least slightly> And I still pray it never happens, if only because I'm not sure UF deserves to be treated like that;) Though at least later Amelia might not get herself killed in the process.

Later Amelia. When she really is a hero.

(Inasmuch as the characters on that show are ever actually allowed to grow... y'know, I never finished Slayers Try because I was so sick of the writers' stubborn refusal to let that happen at any meaningful rate... )

Well, I've been trying to talk Gryph into #including Lina into UF for quite some time, but as I have no story for her and no really indispensable role (and Aya Nakajima fills her niche pretty well in a sci-fi setting), it ain't happened yet.

As for the others, I've really got no use for Sylvie or Zel "Oh What a Gloomy Guy Am I" Gadis, and if I want Naga I'll just have Washuu 'fill out' a tiny black leather bikini, bop her on the head, and emigrate to the far end of the Romulan Empire. }:-{D

But Lina and Amelia, yes, those two would be iiiiiinteresting...

Yeah... originally, it was intended to run through the first half of D-term, up to about mid-April, which would have made that title appropriate, but it got too big. (That's happened before; the prime elements of Christmas Rose and A Rose for the New Year were originally supposed to be a single movement as well, but both dramatic and length considerations prompted a split.)

I love it when a music cue comes together - the end credits theme of Azalynn's Winter Holiday, for instance. Check out the lyrics to "You've Got a Chance" sometime - they're really very appropriate to Utena's situation in the original Rose Tournament.

You've got a chance to confront the world today
Desperate romance is the curse of castaways
What good is skill if you don't make it to the dance?
Despite circumstance, you've got a chance

(Perhaps I'll post the full version up as a Song of the Day later on... )

Ooooooooh, crap. Worrisome thought.

I really need to go back and replay Marathon one of these days... that game whupped ass.

Who would win in a fight: Shodan, Durandal, or Max Headroom?

I don't really have much to say about the latest chapter, aside from "Damn!". This just keeps getting better. Or worse, if you are the characters in it. Psi Core portents abound, Our Heros gain a new arch-nemisis, and their school AI could be described as... mmm... unstable. Could things get any worse? Well, duh: Of course they can. I look forward to more conflict.

And a bigger part for Ed. Ed rules.

Well, it would all come down to their minions. SHODAN has mutants and cyborgs controlled by a primitive hive intelligence. Max Headroom has an unarmed reporter. Durandal has a Mjolnir Mark IX combat cyborg armed with an arsenal of Earth's finest weapons improved by the S'pht.

My money's on Durandal.

Oh dear... clearly Durandal is Durandal for a reason... and I've not seen his 'source material'. I dont suppose someone could enlighten me?

NB... I refer you to UF Core 1, which mentions the origins of the terms Gweep, Gweeping, and the Gweeping Hours. That and time zones. For me, right now its still early gweeping, while on the east coast the gweeping hours are just coming to a close.

PS... Thanks for the Link, Gryph. Just what I needed.

Actually, it's lunchtime around here. I'm on when the sun's up around here. It's the only way to get a quick reply, plus I don't usually have access to the 'net during the gweeping. That doesn't stop me from writing my own fics at those times anyway.

Is this before he finds the Jjaro Dreadnought?
I mean, heck, even before, he could cause trouble (especially if he brought along some s'pht...or worse, s'ht'kr)

After he gets the dreadnought? forget about it, no one else stands a chance...

Aww, disagreement... Shodan might lose at first, but the bit- the clever girl never dies, and evolves herself and her people rapidly, and, most importantly, uses pawns better.

But what would they have to fight over, really? I mean, I could see them fighting, it would make sense in some ways, but I can see them completely ignoring each other, or testing weapons on each other, or even just splitting the universe dead in half and racing each other.

The full curse does say, "May you live in interesting times, may you come to the attention of those in power, and may you get everything that you ever want." Sounds very familiar.

>Looking forward to Hunted Rose.

I always look forward to more EP stuff. However, I just noticed a similarity between that title and the name, Hunter Rose. This ... scares me. I hope it's just my paranoia talking. There are people who shouldn't be in the EP universe; he's one of them.

And now for a word from one of the voices in my head. Please pardon the dramatization, he's a dramatic sort:

"Greetings and calm waters to you Troubadours of Eyrie. I am Barbadicus K'riss Nerish Syrtis, Child of Shivoam, Journeyman Elementalist, Master of the Seventh Ring of Atlosh T'zdram, member of Dragon's Dawn, and t'skrang. I am ... concerned at the presence of this T'skaia Vorokoshiga'ar Ixtixtaaqitl't'chl'Vraihelt Ishkarat, the one that his fellow Name-givers call 'Sky.' Ishkarat is a aropagoi with terrible designs, well-known for their under-handed and grasping ways. They are not the traitorous slavers of K'tenshin, this is true, but their choice of allies reflects poorly on the rest of us t'skrang. He has spirit; had I been there I too would have said to myself, 'choth edo k'tan var' and left that foolish human woman to her pettiness. But, haropas comes from not only jik'harra, but also kyaapas, which means balance between self and family. If Ishkarat calls him, will he follow family or heart? Therein lies the question. Shustal!"

Erm, sorry. He wanted to say something. I just do what the voices tell me to do. :)

>What the heck's a t'skrang?

They're one of the non-human races available as player characters in Earthdawn, a former FASA RPG now being revived by Living Room Games. (Who have something of a presence here - note the .sig of Ebony, whose post contained the lengthy italicized discourse by a t'skrang questioning the wisdom of my design decisions regarding T'skaia. :)

As for what they are, that's fairly well described in Duelists when Sky first appears. For a graphic reference, LR Games has the Brian Stelfreeze painting from the cover of Earthdawn Second Edition on their site. See the green fella in the middle, holding an arrow? That's a t'skrang. You can't see his tail because the obsidiman with the zweihander sword is standing in front of it.

(I am given to understand, btw, that it's pronounced "skrang", much as T'skaia is pronounced "sky-uh".)

Keen. More Komodo Dragon and less Pterodactyl than I was picturing, but very cool. I'll also gather from your pronunciation note that Sky's name isn't nearly as unpronouncable as it looks.

Individual t'skrang vary quite a bit - there are some whose faces are pointier, and some (I'm told) even resemble duck-billed dinosaur types. The crests on their heads vary quite a bit as well.

And, of course, if Laubenstein drew them they're lumpy.

>I'll also gather from your pronunciation note that
>Sky's name isn't nearly as unpronouncable as it looks.

Nope... it's long, but not actually very hard to pronounce. The tricky bit is to remember to put the stop between the a's in in "Vorokoshiga'ar" but NOT in "Ixtixtaaqitl't'chl'Vraihelt", and that t's followed by apostrophes are silent.

(As I briefly consider recording myself saying it and putting it up somewhere, like Verizon had to do when they changed their name to stop people pronouncing it "VURR-iz-un". HINT: If you have to include a pronunciation example on your website, you've chosen a bad name for your company.)

>(Idly wondering if Juri plays electric bass)

I don't think so.

Time for me to illuminate:

In Matt Wagner's 'Grendel', the first man to take on the mantle of Grendel called himself Hunter Rose. No one is quote sure of his first name. He was an Olympic-class (and beyond) fencer, and a man capable of intense focus. He becomes one of the world's greatest assassins, and then one of the world's top crimelords... at the age of 25 or so. OH, and a best-selling and Pulitzer-prize winning author, too.

And his one moment of compassion brings him down. A girl whose father he killed, and who he adopts, finds out his secret, and arranges for his entire empire to develop cracks, and for his greatest enemy to find him.

The entire story is told in illustration and prose, first in the backs of the original 'Mage' series, and then collected into 'Grendel: Devil By The Deed'.

"He was the devil of society's mediocracy."

That was incredible! SoS just keeps getting better and better!

The lesson that Liza Broadbank learned, the one that Psi Corp seems to be asking for, is that in UF, at least, there are people who WILL hit back, no matter how sly and low your hit was. They can and will strike secretly, in ways that will not violate what they believe in, and they will strike back harder than the villian can possibly imagine.

Of course, drawing inspiration from B5, the Earth Alliance government has always had problems recognizing this. It likes to project this image of being a huge monolith, immune to individual action. Of course, it believes its own propaganda.

Psi Corp is getting to big for its britches. They will probably cease to exist soon.

Indeed, Cap. The only question is will it happen in this storyline, or in the 'main' one... the only difference being just how badly Psi Corps gets handed its hat... (With its head still inside.)

Indeed. Emperor Dessler probably wouldn't be amused if Psi Corp tried to recruit his daughter and heir. Then there's a group of mid-to-high level martial artists, one with a powerful magical gift, another a Detian. Then there's an AI who seems to like them, along with the best hacker in the sector, and who knows what's up with Devlin Carter (besides Gryphon, if he even knows yet).

Hell, Amanda's fighter squad would probably show up with or without orders from the Emperor.

We haven't seen much of what Azalynn can do when annoyed, but what we have seen is rather scary. I almost (but not quite) felt sorry for Liza, caught between her and Amanda.

And I sure-hell wouldn't want Moose annoyed at ME!

And that's if the SotS crew ends up handling the problem themselves. IF the main UF characters get involved... Ouch.

I would hope that we wouldn't wipe out the whole planet because of some fascists.

And by fascists, I'd mean the Earth government. Remember, most Psi Corp types are conscripts. If you're psi, either you take anti-psychic drugs or you join Psi Corps. That's a bit like taking everybody with perfect pitch (can hear a note and tell you what it is) and requiring them to join the Army band or wear special earplugs that muffle everything. Not a great choice, eh?

Of course, the Psi Corp types who are assholes reinforce the thought that psychics are assholes that need to be contained...

Something of a lose-lose situation. Okay, so you wouldn't take out the planet, but the high command of Psi Corp and the Earth government will probably have a few visitors, Rites of Passage style at the very least.

There's worse thoughts...one person who was in a B5 RPG wrote up a psi who was also claustrophobic. From the character's view, the options were chemical lobotomy, insanity, or insanity.

Well, yes. If it's before they have a Death Star, then obiously you're just pissing off people with plans/aspirations/daydreams of having a Death Star, which can be bad if they hold a grudge and you plan to live long enough that their plans/aspirations/daydreams come true, but at the time of the pissing off, you're still following the rule of survival. </Monty Python>
