Crap. No. The HTML will be edited and the archive for the Chessmen stuff will be updated tonight.

For those that want to see the whole story:

http://genom.otaking.org/chessmen

(assuming that Otaking's not being a bitch tonight.)

Just to wonder... what made you shatter?

(Granted, a power-suit leap DEX roll failure taking out part of the villian array WAS fun, and so perfect....)

I like it. Nice, doesn't seem to fall into SI territory, which is easy to do. I've read the intro, and the first two parts of endgame. I'm not so certain of each characters motivation for being in the group (Mihoshi? Why Mihoshi?) but I'll hold out till I finish it.

One minor note, and please correct me if I'm wrong. Here's a quote from the story:

Kusanagi glared at the gorgoyle, then Koichi. "This is an outrage!
How dare you accuse--"
"No accusations have been made," Koichi said evenly. "But since we
obviously have just cause..." He turned to one of his guards. "Sakaguchi,
if you would please escort this lady to the _Gunbuster_..."
Sakaguchi nodded briskly. "Yes, sir."
"Now, hold on a minute--" Kusanagi spat.
"You know, this could easily be a capital offense." Koichi swept a
hand across his chest, a dismissive gesture. "Make sure she's got at least
four guards with her at all times. Take her away."
Kusanagi started to say something--no doubt an epithet--but Sakagu-
chi puller her away before she could spit it out. Koichi turned to Goliath
and asked, "Who did you find on that ship?"
"Two Federation officers. Combat Police, and Intelligence. Swear-
ing immunity from everything, and demanding that we let them resume travel-
ing to Moren Station." Goliath turned, looking at the diminishing backs of
Malso and her escort.

End quote...

Koichi is talking to Kusinagi, but at the end, you have Malso walking off. Did I miss something?

AH, yes. One of these days we need to go back and clean that stuff up.

Originally, it was going to be Jeena Malso. Bill re-did Jeena Malso into Motoko Kusanagi and neither of us caught the error.

(There's also a HELL of a lot of revising of the first Chessmen story, because some of the stuff doesn't quite work for me anymore, but that'll come after I finish 'Seven Nights of Stillness' and we collectively finish the next arc, that is tentatively titled en masse 'Books of Souls'.

dusting and cleaning will happen eventually. And we are going to put in the 'where we got it from' guide at some point...

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-01 AT 11:36 PM (EDT)

Good story, I like it. And you're using characters that don't normally get used. Was that intentional?

Oh, yes. That's part of the point of the whole thing.

There's a lot of changes from the source - the relationship between Giant Robo and Daisaku, for example. Savashtar's not even from anime (and I haven't been able to find any Warlock 5 series 1 comics to scan in an image of him, irritatingly).

I still remember the first time I gave a copy of it to someone to read and they hit the part about Max and just STARED at me... That was a moment of pure joy.

As I said, there's gonna be some more - backstory, and the Books of Souls. (Which, I promise, will have a combat not seen since... um... one of the more recent Super Robot Wars games.)

Sidebar: 'Rook to Knight' (source of the quote, for those
joining us late) was more of a prologue or a side story
to the real beginning of the series, 'Kings and Queens.'
How the hell I missed that last lingering reference to
Jeena Malso being there, I don't even remember...but,
thankfully, that was one of the few critical errors in the
series to date. Typos notwithstanding.

At least he's still in the "guess who wrote this part!" part
of the series. :)

I don't remember offhand (I have the amazing ability to forget a lot of what I read...thereby allowing me ot re-read it and get almost the same amount of enjoyment a second/third/fourth/nth time :)

I'm pretty sure the boggling was due to the whole...well, wait...I can say that...that's a SPOILER...
let's just say that the mech that's donated, and who it's donated to
...
and LONG HAIR???
boggle

I don't remember the shatterring offhand, either...and nothing is springing to mind, unfortunately

by the way...for some odd reason, the Arcadia strikes mental chordes of vorlonism...is that just me?

Well, the Eldest Race is very Vorlon-inspired, yes. And the Arcadia is one of those "Go ahead, just try it" kinds of ships (but it is in the original too!). The Chessmen have the ship now, but they don't know all the things it can do. Only Lipumira does, and... well, consider the abilities we've seen so far of the older races. Do you think she's told them everything? Or that she's even ABLE to?

Depending on what happens after Books of Souls, we may explore that.

Read all the way up to Death in the Cathedral. We likes this. Yes we do. I'm too lazy to add RAAC to my newsreader list....maybe tonight I'll go get Golgotha. But I wants more, yes.

   Just a heads-up for the caring...Genom.otaking.org
hasn't been updated with WTG yet, so I went ahead
and set up my sucky mirror page (under construction
through 2005) with it:

Hey, it's free. :)
