"Eeeenteresting..."

I recently got my hands on Cowboy Beebop (the series) and seeing Edward and Ein reminded me that they appeared in the earlier Symphonies. So I decided to reread Symphony 1 (and the others will probably follow).

It's interesting to see just how far ahead Gryphon and Co were foreshadowing some things. For instance in Movement 3 (A Rose for the New Year) I spotted these:

(Eris to Zoner, durring a flashback to how he first found Utena)

"The Tenth World is in a mess," Eris told him, "and the Council of the Aesir are still trying to figure out what to do about it. They'll probably end up sticking some poor jerk with going there and finding out as a Trial of Ascension. "

And later, a bit from Miki's perspective while preparing to ring in the new year:

There was a chance encounter with one of Corwin's schoolmates, a very pleasant, polite seventh-grade girl who was called Fuu, and whose last name he could not remember to save his life.

Amazing some of the things you catch on a second read.

Working through Another Christmas Rose (2nd Symphony, 3rd Movement) and I caught this:

... and R-Type's Mutt-and-Jeff Red Legion bodyguards, burly Charlie Kawalsky and wiry Louis Feretti.

Despite being an SG-1 fan, I missed this the first time I read this story.

And now that I've finally seen Cowboy Beebop, I can visualize this bit much better. 8)

The other was a scarlet aerospace fighter, stiletto-pointed
and sleek, with a pair of straight, T-shaped wings and a large
underslung cannon, its entire body aft of the cockpit bubble taken up
by a brawny vector-ringed fusion turbine. It stood on wheeled
reverse-tricycle landing gear, cockpit canopy standing open, boarding
ladder deployed, waiting.
Utena turned to look at Corwin and his father, who had closed
the doors behind them and stood with their arms folded, grinning.
"You... you're GIVING me the SWORDFISH?!" she burst out.

After I finally work my way through the Symphonies, I think I'm gonna have to go back and reread some of the other EPU stories to see what I missed the first time round.

Believe me, I know the feeling. I recently picked up a sizable chunk of Gold Digger at a friend's suggestion, only to have him ever-so-slyly mention that it was in UF as well. Now, well, I'm rereading a few stories just to pick up the details and enjoy a nice round of "how did I miss THAT?" reactions. UF is quite possibly my biggest continuous source of such things. :)

I'd forgotten just how kickass a lot of the battle sequences are in the symphonies as well. 8)

and one of the best bits ever:

He was tall, thin and dusky, with long silver hair pulled back
from his aquiline face in a ponytail, and he walked with a lazy,
arrogant sort of grace. He was absolutely the last person Juri
Arisugawa would ever have expected to find mocking her, even under
these surreal circumstances. For a few harrowing seconds, her
still-awakening, understrength mind was paralyzed with the horrified,
disbelieving notion that the dead walked.

The speaker seemed to recognize this; his teeth gleamed white
in the shadows on his face as he smiled, chuckling darkly. Then he
took a step forward so that one of the irregular beams of light from
the ceiling fell across his face and the gleaming badge on his chest.

Relief flooded through Juri - most incongruous relief, from
her confronter's point of view. Her body, which had stiffened visibly
against its restraints at the sight of him, relaxed, sagging against
the bonds that held her more or less upright.

Ahmed Garcia didn't really know what to make of that. He had
carried out a great number of interrogations and other such operations
since his assignment to Black Omega, and never once had anyone, in
waking and recognizing his uniform, had the thought,
"Oh - it's only a Psi Cop."

- Hunter Rose, 4th Symphony

another bit I missed the first time thru:

"Can you stand up?" Kohran asked as Skuld left the room.
Dorothy did so, hesitantly, still feeling her way. "OK, good," said
Kohran. "We'll start with optical calibration." She punched a key on
the console next to her, causing a quintet of orange lights in a cross
shape to glow on the far wall. "Just look at the lights one by one -
they'll turn green as your visual subprocessor locks on."

Or maybe I just read this before I first played Halo. 8)

And it's so much fun watching Utena deflate egos.
