"Why I Like TIA"

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-11 AT 02:29 PM (EST)

After finishing TIA #3 the other day, I began to work my way back through the first two TIA stories, hungry for more Ben Stark action. While doing so, I began trying to figure out what I thought of TIA. By that, I mean, if you asked me how I thought of UF, I'd say I thought of it as a wide-spanning science fiction universe; I think of NXE as a deep, science-fantasy techno-thriller, not as wide as UF but just as rich other dimensions; HL and GW are good series to read over a winter break, smaller than the others but just as much fun and with as wonderful chemistry. I'm not sure how to describe TIA yet, but I'm working on a rough model.

At the risk of speaking out of turn, I don't mean this in any backhanded way, TIA kind of makes me think of Warren Ellis' style. There's none of the vulgarities or typical character archetypes in an Ellis story. What makes me think this way are the story elements that seem like they'll become important later (Stark's real age to name one) but have been dangled to the reader.

Perhaps going a bit further, TIA feels like something different than anything Gryphon's done before. Where UF, NXE, and the like were born out of his days at WPI and the tech industry, TIA seems as though it comes from his experience as a newspaper man. Maybe that's because of Stark's profession, which differs from UF, HL, and GW's Ben, but whatever it is, it makes TIA all the more interesting to read.

And TIA is very interesting! As much as I am a fan of HL (and I am a fan of HL, two of my fondest memories from part-time work at college were reading HL in Lynx through a shell account), TIA is a wonderful rebirth of HL. It brings with it all the fun of BGC and MegaTokyo, but structures it in a very logical, organized system.

I look forward to future chapters, and following along with the adventures of Ben Stark, MegaZone, and the Knight Sabers! Thank you, Gryphon!
