"Everspace?"

(Not sure if this is the best forum for this, but given the Elite: Dangerous discussion going on...)

So I'm not usually a contributor to Kickstarters, but I may make an exception for this one. If for on other reason that the price point for the backer level where you get a DRM-free copy of the game is completely reasonable and what I'd be willing to pay for the game outright.

Everspace on Kickstarter

Has anyone here been following this? I've been poking around and some of the vids look extremely appealing, and it has a very strong Freelancer vibe to it -- which was one of my all-time favorite Space Trucker games (oh, and, the story wasn't bad either).

Rogue (well, Nethack) these days has an optional isometric three-d view mode...

But yeah.

Actually, on reflection this afternoon I figured out what they might mean. The video briefly showed what appeared to be a starmap with hyperspace lanes or links or whatever, and when I thought about it, I realized it had a familiar structure -- by Roguelike I wonder if they mean they randomly generate a set of rooms (star systems) connected by hallways (those links) for every level (map).

That could be it - although if so, it's a bit of a reach for them, IMO. Like describing football as "farming-like" because it happens on a field. :)

I think, from perusal of the Kickstarter page and chasing down various other bits scattered on Reddit and such, that the rogue-like element is supposed to be the solo adventure exploration nature of the game, plus the dying.

Which, well, I mean, I dunno about you guys, but I died a LOT playing Nethack.

I do kind of like the idea that you don't have to start completely from scratch every flippin' time you fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova. Though I'm almost getting vibes of Paranoia from how they're describing it, there.

"Rogue-like" is a highly diluted term these days but general describes a game with a randomized map and perma-death, usually structured around an RPG base with stats and items. It may or may not be turn-based (most modern ones aren't) and sometimes they'll let you carry certain things across death like a special kind of currency or a set of unlocks (and in so doing, are sometimes referred to as "rogue-lite").

Some modern examples would be Crypt of the Necrodancer, Rogue Legacy, FTL, Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, and Dungeons of Dreadmor.

You could also consider the Diablo series a bit of a rogue-lite, due to the highly random nature of the levels and loot, though obviously perma-death only exists in "hardcore" mode.

If by "correct" you mean "agreed with one other random person on the internet" then yes.

;)

I don't think anyone really has a big guide book of game genres... especially when certain genres are so broad as to be meaningless - "First person shooter" for example. Which is somehow a different genre from "Third person shooter". Or "RPG" which somehow manages to encompass both Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect.

...almost went on a rant there <_<
