"Red Sox retiring #45"
|
On the occasion of his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame next month, the Boston Red Sox will be retiring the number worn by pitcher Pedro Martínez. Pedro was the superstar of the Sox during my first period of baseball fandom, in the mid-to-late '90s. In 1997 or '98, I had the privilege of sitting in a tiny, hard seat in Fenway Park and watching him completely annihilate the Minnesota Twins in a game that had no strategic significance, but was immensely satisfying as a spectator experience. A few years later, I gave his fictional descendant Consuela the honor of terminating the Toronto Raiders of the Galactic League in the last game of the 2404 World Series, in the very first Symphony of the Sword story, Wounded Rose. I can't say for certain that I gave Coco jersey number 46 because I assumed even then that the Sox would be retiring #45, but I'd like to think I did. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D.
